[cayugabirds-l] Mourning Doves

2020-05-12 Thread Judy Cuyle
We were surprised at the comments about Mourning Doves fighting. We have lots
of Mourning Doves and have never seen this behavior. Maybe because we have so
many feeders? Year round we have 13 sunflower seed feeders and three suet
feeders (each holding three cakes). Now we also have a hummingbird feeder (no
hummers yet tho), a Baltimore Oriole feeder, and a grape jelly feeder. Some
years we have four hummingbird feeders. The Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers like
the hummingbird feeder too. Actually, the Oriole prefers it to the Oriole
feeder.

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, etc.

2019-05-14 Thread Judy Cuyle
Here on upper Bruce Hill Road in Danby we have three males and at least one
female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. We usually have them in the summer. We had a
male Indigo Bunting stop at the feeders once this year, and that seems to be an
annual occurrence. We see it just the once. We have two or three male Baltimore
Orioles and, we think, one female. It's lighter than a male but darker than a
female. The Orioles won't use the Oriole feeder; they use the Hummingbird
feeder and work on fresh oranges. We've only seen one pair of Hummingbirds so
far this year. Some years we have so many we have four feeders for them.
Watching the various birds and other wild animals certainly keeps us
entertained!

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeaks on upper Bruce Hill Road, Danby

2016-05-11 Thread Judy Cuyle
Are male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks not territorial? We have three of them hanging
around our sunflower feeders and suet feeders and they seem to be okay with
each other. We put up two extra suet feeders this morning because they seem to
like the suet and our regular suet feeders are bottom-feed only. We've only
seen one female so far. We do have at least one Ruby-throated Hummingbird. No
Baltimore Orioles yet this year.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Buzzards

2014-09-25 Thread Judy Cuyle
Late yesterday morning my husband and I saw a kettle of Turkey Buzzards soaring
near the ponds near Robert Packer Hospital/Guthrie Clinic. It was a first for
us to see so many together. There must have been around 100 of them. We live
near the top of Bruce Hill Road in Danby and watch Turkey Buzzards soaring over
the valley all summer, but only a few at a time.
