[cayugabirds-l] MNWR this a.m.
Made a quick stop about 8:15 by about the impoundment at the MNWR Visitor Center this morning. Didn't spot the White-Fronted Goose among the Canadas but enjoyed watching a group of Shovelers having breakfast and a couple of Black Ducks preening. No Snows. A single Wood Duck in full dress caught the last of the morning sunlight as it cruised along the SW edge before the storm front shut down the sun. Nice. OOB: Made the trip to Tonawanda WMA yesterday evening and was rewarded with a full 15 minutes of great views of the immature White Ibis. It's been coming in to roost with a good-sized flock of Great Egrets in a GBHE rookery every evening shortly before sunset since sometime last week. Let me know if you'd like directions. A humorous moment: an egret floating in across the dike on its final approach to the roost trees and accompanied by the distant rumble of a jet. A very appropriate sound effect. [cayugabirds-l] YC Kinglet etc.
A perky little Yellow-crowned Kinglet foraging in the Norway Spruce when I arrived back home about noon. Also my mystery bird singing--a Carolina Wren. It's fall song had me fooled again. I never expect that sound from any kind of wren and it catches me by surprise. (Paul Anderson--that was the one I was trying to figure out last weekend on that dizzly field trip.) [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs pond
Another check at the factory pond in Union Springs about 4:30 this evening yielded the large continguency of Canada Geese that has been there for several days as well as a few Mallards and Redheads, and this time I picked out several American Wigeons as well. They may have been there all along but I'd not taken the time to look that closely. Another carload of birders was checking things out when I pulled up, but I don't know who. [cayugabirds-l] Eagles at Mud Lock
Lynn Bergmeyer and I birded down the east side of Cayuga Lake today. Steve Fast reported much of what we saw. (We missed some of his finds.) We did see two BALD EAGLES in the trees near the nest at Mud Lock. Many TUNDRA SWANS along the ice shelf of the channel between there and Black Bridge. In Union Springs, a single SNOW GOOSE on Mill Pond (Rte 90) among the CANADA GEESE and other waterfowl, and a HOODED MERGANSER as well as the pale duck (see Fritzie Blizzard's post) on Factory Pond (Factory Street). [cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Mallards
Today I was in Union Springs about 2:00 on my way to give a couple of piano lessons and I swung by the Mill Pond on Rte 90. A group of Mallards had collected in the NE corner of the pond, and the light was just right to turn the heads on all of them a lovely deep blue, some of them a purple blue, with no hint of green on any of them--a beautiful combination with their yellow bills. Like a photograph that had the one color altered. On my return trip a male in the company of a female in the middle of the pond was bobbing his head in a courtship display. I did not have time to scope out (with bins) the hundreds of waterfowl on the edge of the ice down on the lake, but it looked like it could be interesting. Lots of Robins around the past few days. Have heard them making various calls and squawks but not singing yet. Have not heard any Cardinals singing yet either. Am enjoying a flock of Horned Larks that moved into my neighborhood in the past ten days after being so scarce all winter. Also seeing a few Snow Buntings on Skillet Road when I go to Auburn from the south. Neighborhood Kestrels and Red-tailed Hawks and Mockingbirds are good company as well, and the Great-horned Owls can be heard most nights. [cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds nesting
It's official: the first time ever that I have Bluebirds nesting in my yard! Out on the closeline pole where John Blizzard put a couple of Doug Carlter's bluebird boxes. House Wrens usually stake a claim on the one on the tree just outside the dining rm window, sometimes another pair on the clothesline pole box, but there was a male Bluebird claiming it this time, and the female nearby in the redbuds. A Tree Swallow may be in the second one on the pole, but with my mowing today I think they've all had enough tension so will check it out more closely another day. ---Kathy Strickland _ The New Busy is not the too busy. [cayugabirds-l] MNWR and MWC
This morning I birded with Jeanette and Cutler Baldwin (from Owego) for a couple hours, starting at the Refuge and looping up to the Savannah area before heading back to Union Springs. A few highlights: Wildlife Drive (8 a.m.): 8-10 immature Bald Eagles on the ground, in the trees across the river, and in the air Tschache: Trumpeter Swan feeding near tower. 4 fishing Ospreys (with considerable success), Swamp Sparrow calling, not seen. (and at other locations as well) Mays Point: 5 Black Terns (sometimes harassing the Great Blue Herons), Marsh Wren (there and everywhere!), Wood Ducks distant in glare Knox-Marsellus: Newly-hatched young at the nest with both adult Trumpeter Swans, to the south toward Towpath. Too distant for a count. (La Rue and Jackie doing the census and kindly shared scope.) Carncross: spectacular views of the Sandhill Crane family in the sunshine, just beyond the nearest grass ridge. Their rusty orange really stands out against the now-solid green of the vegetation, and the young are tall enough to be easily seen even when their heads are down feeding. Martens Tract: Pied-billed Grebe w/4 small young, several Common Moorhens, Willow Flycatcher and Common Yellowthroat singing and seen. VanDyne Spoor (wooded stretch): Veery, Wood Thrush, Redstart, Cerulean Warbler, to name a few heard but not seen. [cayugabirds-l] Barn Swallows fledged
All 5 baby Barn Swallows were sitting on the edge of their nest when I got home around 1 yesterday afternoon and the first swooped out of the nest as I watched. Two more left over the course of the afternoon, at different times. (I'd check between piano lessons.) [cayugabirds-l] Sunday outing
Fritzie Blizzard and I spent the day yesterday exploring the area for what we could find. First special sighting of the day was the Sandhill Crane family (2 adults, 2 nearly fullsized colts) on Rte 90 at E Venice Road intersection. They were in the regrowing alfalfa field foraging when we arrived about 8 a.m. but within minutes they were ambling off to the woods on the west side of the field and shortly disappeared, one by one. We joined Linda Spielman's tracking group at N. Spencer Marsh at 10:00 and had a good hike. In addition to furry animal sign and predated turtle nests we found an adult bald eagle in a tree on the southern island (and were told by the man at the farmstand where we parked that it's nest was visible when the leaves were off the trees). Also owl pellets full of rodent bones. We ambled up the west side of the lake, mostly on back roads, not seeing much in the way of birds but enjoying the lovely day, the singing of Indigo Buntings as we stopped to admire the straw bales of a harvested wheat field, an overhead RT Hawk, etc. We headed up the the new Seneca Meadows Wetlands, having read Leona's post, and a Sora Rail scooted across our path at one point--a life bird for Fritzie, I think. A couple small birds chased off a Pileated WP. Then a swing by Tschache: immature Bald Eagle on a mound, Osprey hunting, GB Herons in abundance, lone Pied-billed Grebe, no Tundra Swan in view, though I've seen it there nearly every visit since mid-June. Then on to Towpath in search of the Trumpeter Swan family (a wash) but 3 Great Egrets, several Black Terns, about 20 Caspians, Common Moorhens, innumerable Great Blues, a small flock of peeps (no ID), ducks hard to ID in the low evening sun, and we were feeling rather casual anyway. Fun to watch a f. Cardinal and later a Catbird and then a Goldfinch bathing in puddles. Fritzie caught sight of a Sora on the east side of the second impoundment. A nice way to end a beautiful weekend.---Kathy Strickland, Union Springs _ Hotmail is redefining busy with tools for the New Busy. [cayugabirds-l] Tschache, Mays, K-M, Rte 89, RR Road
A little birding and general nature with 3 teens this evening. They loved watching the Caspians and Ospreys hovering and fishing over Tschache. The Tundra Swan was hidden in the Loosestrife pretty far west but was visible now and then. At the Mays platform the continuous peeping of baby Pied-billed Grebes. Adult and 5 young Common Moorhens in their usual area. A Great Egret working on catching supper. Must have been too late for the Black Terns. The Sandhill Cranes were not yet at K-M Marsh when we stopped by around 7:15 but there were two Swans (Trumpeters?) on a mudbar fairly close by. To the south the Trumpeter family was just visible along the Towpath dike. Caspians, a half dozen Bald Eagles (1 adult), various shorebirds (not able to distinguish with bins and fading light) and scores of Great Blues. Sundogs framing the sun, and another atmospheric light phenomenen on the same plane at 90 degrees to the sun in the NE--no color. Have to check that out. Around the corner on 89 we found 4 adult Sandhills and a group of Canadas in the field and got good looks. Up to RR Road (Indigo Buntings on wire) and hiked in on the dike until almost too dark to see. An immature Red-tail Hawk greeted us on arrival. 3 Black-crowned Night Herons flew up on the west side of the dike. The Trumpeter Swan family came out of the cattails to spend the night on their favorite mound--3 young. Marsh Wrens singing their wonderful grating songs. A Green Heron. Single Pied-billed Grebe. Herons going to roost in a dead Cottonwood. Couldn't walk without startling up Leopard Frogs. Bullfrog chorus tuning up as we left a little after 9 in the light of a waxing gibbous moon and Venus. So nice to be with teens who are so absorbed in discovering and enjoying nature. Kathy Strickland, Union Springs _ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. [cayugabirds-l] Some lake birds

Swung by the Lock yesterday noon and found both adult Bald Eagles at the nest, one in it, another in a nearby tree. The latter swung down and caught a fish, flew to the nest where it proceeded to eat it, while the one that had been in the nest flew into a tree, presumable to watch for lunch. Shovelers, a single Pied-billed Grebe, and a dozen or so Buffleheads on the pond around 7pm. --Kathy Strickland -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Brown Creeper
I seldom see Brown Creepers here, so it was a real treat to watch one working its way around on the old winter pear tree north of the house about 4 this afternoon. [cayugabirds-l] YB Eastern Wood Pewee
Another FOS yardbird today--Eastern Wood Pewee. Was around past couple of years as well. Watched it drop out of the pear tree and catch insects just above the grass, then resume it's perch in the tree and sing both songs (that I'm familiar with, anyway) before flying off. Usually hear it singing from what's left of the swampy woods across the road. [cayugabirds-l] CBC Picnic tonight?
Just wanting verification--picnic at Myers tonight? Finally caught sight of both Aurora Red-headed WPs yesterday. And the Bluebirds in my yard, which I haven't seen for several weeks, were zipping around as I drove in the driveway and were at the nest box again, though the pole it's on has been pulled (to make room for building a garage--box was empty at the time) and is just leaning against a tree at the moment. Nearby Common Yellowthroats, Yellow Warblers, a Pewee, and Field and Song Sparrows singing--a sweet tiny-bird choir. No yard Indigos this year, though there are several pairs up around the corner on Powers Rd. [cayugabirds-l] Indigo Bunting--better late than never
An Indigo Bunting finally showed up in my yard yesterday. Was wondering if I'd been abandoned this year. Heard in the morning and mid-day, but later went out to listen with a couple piano students and it placed itself in great view so both the kids and their parents got good looks. Don't know if there's a female around. The yard Blue Jays fledged (nest not seen but know it's somewhere near), and a couple nestfulls of Chipping Sparrows. The Carolina Wren has started up again after about 6 weeks of silence or absence. [cayugabirds-l] Birding Sunday
Just wondering if anyone is birding around the lake, or up here at the north end tomorrow (Sunday). I have a rare Sunday off and would like to hook up with a group or individual to bird for whatever part of the day would work out. You may email me privately or call me (315-730-4451). [cayugabirds-l] NE end of Lake
Just back from along the NE section of Cayuga Lake. Nothing much different that what others have been seeing, but did witness 2 cool mass flights. From Mud Lock (Bald Eagle on nest) I heard the cries of the Tundra Swans that had been out on the far side of the lake, and moments later several hundred flew directly over in skeins of varying lengths. A couple hours later I was viewing the southern end of the Redhead (and others) raft from a friend's yard. As I was opening the car door to leave I heard a wall of waterfowl yelps, looked north, and most of the 20,000 (an estimate I read on this listserve) were in the air and sweeping in dark masses a huge flock of blackbirds. For several minutes I watched, fascinated. They were mostly settled down again when I finally left. Didn't see a single raptor the entire 3 hrs. [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture roost threat
Many of the Turkey Vultures here in the northern part of the Basin actually roost in Auburn, in and near Fort Hill Cemetery. Last week when I arrived at the parking lot of Auburn United Methodist Church on Fitch, I stood to watch the birds circling in and landing in the Norway Spruces that line the western edge of the lot. Suddenly a shot rang out and about 50 vultures were startled out of the trees. While I doubt they were in physical danger, evidently someone in the neighborhood is either thinking the birds pose a problem in the area, or is just thinking it's fun to harass them. Either way, it's wrong. I had to get inside for choir rehearsal or I would have at least walked down the street a ways to see if I could locate the source of the shot. Any ideas on how to deal with this? [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Ospreys
I'm guessing at least one of our Ospreys has fledged. I didn't have time to drive over to the nest site on Center Rd, but about 11:00 today I was heading home on Spring St when I saw 3 Ospreys over the field on the noth side of the road as I was reaching the crest. One landed on the ground and proceeded to shriek periodically as the others flew off, presumably to the lake to fish. There were also 2 Red-tailed Hawk slowly circling over the same field but much higher. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Ospreys
Yesterday morning I found a just-fledged Osprey roadkill on Spring St about a quarter mile west of where I'd been wa This morning about 930 there were 5 Ospreys circling high above the nest site on Center/No.1 Rd, and a not-particularly-welcome Red-tailed Hawk. The youngsters were characteristically shrieking as they soared. Made a brief visit to Seneca Meadows WP with 5 teens and saw 9 nests and 25 Ospreys. Lots of Bobolinks in varying plumages, and a young meadowlark just beginning to show signs of its black chevron. [cayugabirds-l] Finishing Osprey post
Accidentally sent previous post prematurely. Was mentioning the fledgling roadkill. I'd been watching it near midday on Tues near the road in a field at the crest of the Spring St hill, probably on its maiden flight. So it was disappointing to find it (possibly same bird) sprawled dead on the roadside the next morning. Its condition leads me believe it was hit sometime Tues afternoon. So it was extra nice to see 5 drifting together today. Could it be possible that the pair raised 4 youngsters? [cayugabirds-l] 2 more Osprey nests
Learned of 2 more Union Springs Osprey nests just south of town--one at the Dildine/Hardy Rds T and the other just a few utility poles north of the T. Both were occupied this year. It's just a road I don't usually go down. [cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow back
Stepped outside to head to Syr this morning and the sweet song of my Field Sparrow greeted me, FOS. Observed on yesterday's drive along 520 just west of MNWR--Ospreys present on 5 of the 7 nest structures. Later I watched an Osprey dip into the entrance pool at the Refuge (startling several Mallards in the process) and grab a talonful of algae which it took to the nest (badly damaged over the winter) along the river. Along River Rd there were several DC Cormorants in the river, and at Mud Lock a Bald Eagle flew in with food and proceeded to feed the youngsters. [cayugabirds-l] Tree swallows
Heading out if Union Springs yesterday I screeched to a halt (no cars behind me!) when I saw the signature clothespins on a line sight--up to 48 Tree Swallows at a time on the utility line just east of the Union Springs Academy greenhouse on Spring Street. And at least that many more--probably many more-- swooping over the newly mowed alfalfa fields.
