That's right, on the web you can find videos of Red-tailed Hawks hunting at
dusk as vast clouds of bats emerge from their roosting cave. Here's one such:

 http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e22_1344450135

The presence of multiple remains under the pole in the TCAT parking lot
suggests that this accipiter has discovered a bat roost in the area. Might be
fun to find out where that is.

[cayugabirds-l] Accipiter eating bats

2014-08-10 Thread Kevin Loope
Sitting on my porch at around 8:15 this evening, I noticed a silhouetted
accipiter (female sharp-shinned or male cooper’s?) atop the utility pole in the
TCAT parking lot in Varna. It was pulling apart what I thought was a small
bird, but when it tossed it off and flew away I found the fresh remains of a
bat (mostly wings) at the base of the pole, plus the remains of at least two
more bats that were slightly less fresh. Do they “hawk” the bats in flight??
What a remarkable feat that would be! Anyone ever witnessed it?

Cheers,
Kevin Loope

[cayugabirds-l] Observations of bird/wasp interactions

2013-05-08 Thread Kevin Loope
Dear bird listers,
I study the behavioral ecology of local yellowjackets, and have always wondered
which bird species are responsible for the destruction of so many young
colonies in late May and early June. I'm most curious about predators of
aerial-nesting yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets
(http://wiki.bugwood.org/HPIPM:Baldfaced_Hornet), but would love to hear
anecdotes and observations about birds interacting with ground-nesting
yellowjackets, as well as paper wasps. I recall a year or two ago, someone
posted a description of crows knocking down an adult bald-faced hornet nest.
What an dramatic event to witness! If you have any stories, please send them my
way.

Thanks!
Kevin Loope

[cayugabirds-l] Ovenbird behind Corson/Mudd Hall

2012-04-25 Thread Kevin Loope
This afternoon, after walking out the back door of Corson/Mudd Hall on Cornell
Campus, I saw an Ovenbird scurrying around below the white pine near the
building. This was a first for me this year, so I thought I'd let others know.
I've certainly never seen one there before!

Cheers,
Kevin Loope
