I spent about 15 minutes around 2pm today enjoying excellent views with and
without binoculars (too close for anything but low power on my scope!) of the
King Eider swimming, diving and eating crayfish (I think) in Fall Creek near
the boathouse. He was often as close as 15 feet from the
For the first time ever we had two Common Redpolls at our feeder on Perry Lane
on west hill this morning. Also, several House Finches enjoyed splashing
around in our birdbath in water from melted snow. Marsha Kardon

red-breasted mergansers, common and hooded mergansers, 1 common
loon, many ring-necks, a pair (male and female) of scaups,
two male buffleheads, a pair belted kingfisher and two wood ducks.

Could someone help to identify the bird we saw this morning on the ground and
in the bushes near our feeders? See the three links below. We're wondering if
it could be a leucistic junco. It was significantly larger than the goldfinches
hopping around near it. Marsha and Fred Kardon
We saw a barred owl at Sapsucker Woods about 11 AM today. It was
being mobbed by 2 crows (not very successfully). We heard a
sapsucker tapping there also. From the Lab viewing area we saw
a yellow warbler, a palm warbler, and a common yellowthroat.

This morning, while surveying my back yard
where I have a bird feeder, an Eastern phoebe
flew into our garden and landed on the tip of a
garden stake. Less than 10 feet from me, it
bobbed its tail a few times while I observed
it with my binoculars, then it flew off.
According to eBird, this is

We do take a stand on the crow shoot to be held this weekend at the Millport
Hunting and Fishing Club in Schuyler County. We think it is callous and
distasteful to kill any animal for recreation, as is planned at this event.

I am not clear about the legality of the Schuyler crow shoot.
The American crow is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty
Act of 1918. However, there is a depredation order for blackbirds,
cowbirds, grackles, crows, and magpies. This can be viewed on
the Electronic Code of Federal
