[cayugabirds-l] Young bird

2014-08-18 Thread Mary Jane Thomas
We saw this little bird in our garden tonight - a young bird who wasn't sure
what to do and eventually flew to a tree where a parent was waiting. They both
then flew so we never got a gook look at the parent. Can someone help us ID
this bird, please? I should know this but don't.

Hi -

Has anyone been to the Mucklands recently and, if so, are there many Snow Geese
there?

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks, Cardinals

2017-03-18 Thread Mary Jane Thomas
An interesting article about Woodcocks from today’s NY Times.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/17/nyregion/an-early-bird-gets-caught-in-the-snowstorm.html?emc=edit_th_20170318=todaysheadlines=28196654

On another topic. The other day I found a dead male Cardinal on our side
patio. There was no sign of trauma. However, it reminded me of the awful day
last spring when I found 4-5 dead Cardinals lined up on the same patio. Again,
no sign of trauma. There are windows they could have struck; I have decals on
them to help with prevention (I’m aware the decals are not a complete
solution). But they were lined up so neatly I couldn’t believe it was
accidental. Had they been killed by a hawk, I would not have expected the
bodies to be there. We have indoor cats but they never go out. There are
other cats around but not that close to the house; even if they were close our
cats would let us know I’m sure.

I have some photos of the immediate area of the house if it would help. I
would really be interested in any ideas, advice, etc. anyone has.

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] House wren

2017-04-30 Thread Mary Jane Thomas
Yesterday I watched a Chickadee building a nest in a box hanging on a fence
near us. Today, just now, I looked out and saw a House Wren (first of the
year) busily tossing all the nesting materials out of the box. Is this usual
behavior? Do they usually clean house before taking over a nest box? Wrens
nested in this box last year.

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma, mucklands, etc. info

2019-03-20 Thread Mary Jane Thomas
Does anyone have recent info about the bird life status on the wildlife drive
at MNWR or in the Mucklands? We’re planning on being in the area on Saturday.
We’d like to see Snow Geese while we’re in the general area - are they more apt
to be on Cayuga Lake still?

Thanks for the help and advice.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake--no Snow Geese

2019-03-23 Thread Mary Jane Thomas
We were at Knox-Marcellus this afternoon (probably around one) and saw
thousands of Snow Geese in the distance. We then drove to the Mucklands and
saw a huge flock fly in and settle down. It was wonderful!

We also saw Pintails at the Mucklands. Earlier we had been to the northern end
of Cayuga and saw many Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead, Canvasbacks, Redheads,
numerous Tundras and others. No Snow Geese there that we saw.
