RE:[cayugabirds-l] Merlin

2021-03-23 Thread smb4inc
The local northeast area of Ithaca Merlin returned last week.  I saw the Merlin
while looking for the crows.  Initially heard then seen chasing whomever
possible near St. Catherine's Church on Siena X Blackstone.  The Merlin has
been flying around the neighborhood since then.
This morning the Merlin was perched in a tree in my yard and was quite vocal.

[cayugabirds-l] Merlin Family

2014-07-24 Thread smb4inc
Last evening we watched a family of Merlins in the northeast area of Ithaca.
We first saw them preening in the trees on Hanshaw near Orchard after the
thunder storm had passed. They flew to the trees near St. Catherine's Church
where they swooped down on a family of foraging crows, and chased 2 crows in
and out of the trees. They shifted to the trees on St. Catherine's Place where
they chased a family of Blue Jays. It also looked as though the juveniles were
playing some talon tag between chasing the Blue Jays. On our way home, we
heard the Merlin calls and found them chasing a Killdeer family in the trees
between Simsbury and Winthrop.

There is a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER singing along Armitage Road in the normal spot
this morning.

Along the auto loop I had the previously reported female WILSON'S PHALAROPE at
Benning Marsh and another bird at the very north end of the main pool. This
bird
was distant and in the morning fog combined with a little distortion I struggle
a bit with the ID but I believe it was a male WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

[cayugabirds-l] Mudlock Bald Eagles

2012-10-21 Thread smb4inc
Yesterday afternoon we birded the upper end of the lake and around Montezuma.
On our way home we checked the Mudlock Bald Eagles and saw an adult and a
juvenile sitting in a tree at the point. After a bit the adult took off and
gathered nesting materials which it carried to a tree just north of the point.
We then noticed that a second adult was sitting in what looked to be the
beginnings of a nest.

Is this a new pair or have the Mudlock pair moved to a tree to nest?
