[cayugabirds-l] Injured screech owl in Locke

2014-12-03 Thread Amy E. Layton
Hi all,
This morning on my way to work I noticed a bird face down in the road in front
of my house...I was sad because I figured it was an owl that had been killed,
so I drove on. Then I thought to myself I did not want the poor thing to be
smashed, so I turned around as I was going to lay it in the leaves on the side
of the road. Well, when I got back, it was sitting upright. So I went over
and it looked up at me and the right eye was squinty a little and the feathers
a little out of place over that eye, but it was looking around and right at me.
I went to get the cat carrier to try and bring it in and when I tried to pick
it up it flew- it flew pretty high but then landed in the brush next to our
garage. The wings seemed ok, but it seemed disoriented. I went to see where
it landed and it flew a short bit again, but not into a tree, still on the
ground. I decided to let it sit since it seems to fly, and I did not want to
push it or startle it anymore.
Did I do the right thing? I left a message for CU raptor center but we live in
Locke about 25 minutes away - I was not sure who else to call/do, or should I
just let it go? I took a picture of it and it looks alert...
Thanks, all!

Saw many in a field on right going north on Rt. 89past Sheldrake.
They flew west, not far.

Gorgeous pattern of bright whites and dark wing tips against an ominous
purplish sky!

We are hoping to see some snow geese on Cayuga Lake. Is it too late? Any snow
geese rafts around?
We are in Ithaca, but will take a drive. Thanks

[cayugabirds-l] tufted titmouse pic

2014-01-21 Thread Amy E. Layton
Hi there,
Took this photo of a titmouse searching for bugs in the abandoned yellowjacket
nests on our house this weekend! Thought it was pretty neat and figured I
would share!
