[cayugabirds-l] Escaped sun conure

2013-06-03 Thread Andrew Myers
Hi all,

On Lincoln St just west of the intersection with Short St there is an
escaped sun conure squawking from the top of a Norway spruce. Its owners
are in the side yard. There was a man with a directional microphone
recording the bird in the front yard. I didn't realize the bird's owner and
the man with the recorder weren't aware of each other until the man had
left. I bet he was confused. Just thought I'd make the connection. I hope
the bird comes down. Maybe playback would help?

Cheers,

Andrew

[cayugabirds-l] Morgan rd SEOWs, n. shrike, and harrier

2013-03-03 Thread Andrew Myers
This afternoon John Confer, Julia Gillis, Michaela TerAvest, and I drove up
to the NYSDEC office on Morgan rd. in the Montezuma complex and had
wonderful views of no fewer than 5 short-eared owls gliding and careening
over the fields. We also saw a harrier and a strike in a shrub in the
field. We had a great time, and I highly recommend making the trip!

Cheers,

Andrew

[cayugabirds-l] Hurd Rd. Saw Whet

2011-04-05 Thread Andrew Myers
Last night around 11:00 while out observing migrating amphibians I heard a
saw whet owl calling north of Hurd Rd. just west of the top of the hill.
Way better than any basketball game, in my opinion!

Cheers!

[cayugabirds-l] killdeer

2011-03-10 Thread Andrew Myers
Saw/heard my first killdeer of the year at the corner of 366 and Game Farm.
It was in the field southwest of the intersection. It's feeling more and
more like spring!

[cayugabirds-l] bluebird on Freese Rd.

2011-03-04 Thread Andrew Myers
I've been seeing and hearing a bluebird on the telephone wire in front of
the building with the bee hives just south of the Freese Rd. gardens. A
welcome sight on a cold, sunny day!

[cayugabirds-l] merlin yesterday near Cornell compost

2011-02-16 Thread Andrew Myers
Hi all,

Sorry this is a little late. I saw a merlin on a telephone pole yesterday
on the north side of Stevenson Rd just west of the intersection with Turkey
Hill. It turned its head 180 degrees to check me out and then flew north
along the hedgerow.

Cheers!

[cayugabirds-l] questions about the pheasant farm

2011-01-31 Thread Andrew Myers
Hello list,

I have a couple questions about the Reynolds Game Farm, which I see every
day out my back window.

A few days ago I was running on Stevenson Rd and I noticed someone next to
the game farm fence swinging a whistle on a string over his/her head. Does
anyone know what the person was up to?

And I am sure this has been discussed before, but are the red tailed hawks
attracted by the pheasants or by rodents attracted by the pheasant food? I
have witnessed them eating pheasants, and I occasionally find a pheasant
body part in my backyard, but I'm wondering why they don't just clean
house? I often see them sitting on the fence alongside pheasants.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!

I heard that it is a DOT wetland mitigation project, but I'm not positive.
