[cayugabirds-l] Hummer in Mecklenberg

2012-09-27 Thread Anne R. Hobbs
Just one more sighting to add to all the others. I've been hearing from a
woman in Mecklenberg who still has a young male Ruby-throat coming regularly to
her feeder and she's got the photos to prove it.

[cayugabirds-l] Siskins and Goldfinches in abundance

2012-04-23 Thread Anne R. Hobbs
I haven't had a Pine Siskin at my feeders (at least when I was watching) all
season. This morning there was a large flock of American Goldfinches littering
the trees and with them were at least six Pine Siskins. Clearly either feast
or famine at my house. The goldfinches who were already in their full breeding
plumage looked like yellow flowers in the snow of our trees...

BIRD MAN OF PETERBORO: Greene Smith
Saturday, April 14: Historic Peterboro Celebrates Famed Ornithologist's 170th

On April 14, 1842, Greene Smith was born in Peterboro, NY to famed
abolitionists Ann and Gerrit Smith. He became a world-class citizen-scientist
and a renowned sportsman who was also an early conservationist. An expert
ornithologist who worked with the Smithsonian Institution, Smith acquired one
of the world's finest mid-19th century collections of bird specimens, many of
which were rare, some already extinct. Smith's remarkable 3-story Bird House
museum, built in 1863, featured indoor heating and plumbing, a stocked fishpond
and running streams, live as well as stuffed birds, and a state-of-the-art
taxidermy lab. His donated specimens helped to establish the collections at
Cornell and Colgate Universities and Harvard's Agassiz Museum.

An informal presentation detailing Smith's life and contributions begins at 2
p.m. at the Smithfield Community Center at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road in the
village of Peterboro. Afterward, a short walk will take interested
participants to the nearby Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark, site
of Greene's renowned Bird House museum, the ruins of which volunteers will
begin to clear and catalogue this summer. An informal birding ramble will
follow on the Estate and nearby grounds. Dress accordingly. $2 suggested
donation supports the work of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic
Landmark . For more information, call 684-7025.

[cayugabirds-l] FW: hawks nesting on new I.C. bldg

2010-04-01 Thread Anne R. Hobbs
Hi, All,
You may already know about this nest but a pair of red-tailed hawks has
built a nest on a ledge on the north-east side (facing the lake) of the Peggy
R. Williams Center, the building that looms over Rte. 96B at Ithaca College.
The nest is actually visible while driving up south hill.

Cheers, Anne
