[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Army Depot Birding Tours

2019-03-25 Thread Chris Lajewski

Dear Birders:

The Montezuma Audubon Center and Seneca White Deer would like to invite you to
a unique birding experience this spring at the former Seneca Army Depot. We
will offer a rare glimpse into the breeding and migratory songbirds, birds of
prey and their habitats of this Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA). For years,
birders have wondered, “what lies beyond the fence?” Wonder no more. Now your
birding community has the chance to find out.

We will lead birding tours on our comfortable tour bus from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
on May 6, 13, and 20, and June 3, 17, and 24. Come experience this IBA where
over 120 species of birds either migrate through or live during the year.
Furthermore, we proudly announce that our pair of Bald Eagles is back again for
at least the 11th straight year!

This site encompasses approximately 10,000 acres between Cayuga and Seneca
Lakes in the Finger Lakes region. Having formerly been maintained as a military
base, much of the area is successional habitat. According to the NY GAP data,
approximately 80% of the site is shrub habitat, which includes old
field/pastures, shrub swamps, successional hardwoods, and successional shrubs.
The site also has extensive forest and some wetland habitat, and supports a
population of white deer.

This relatively large early successional habitat supports characteristic
species, including the American Woodcock, Willow Flycatcher, Brown Thrasher,
Blue-winged Warbler, Eastern Towhee, and Field Sparrow. A Red-headed Woodpecker
was reported in 2003.

Besides the multitude of bird species, the tour will offer stops to look at a
beaver dam, a personnel bomb shelter, an empty ammo bunker and a cemetery with
the remains of colonial soldiers! In addition, you will have a chance to see
some members of the world’s largest herd of white, whitetail deer!

Chris Lajewski, Center Director of the Montezuma Audubon Center, will be your
birding guide. Chris has nearly 20 years of experience guiding bird tours and
will be a great compliment to our tour guide/driver who will talk about the
wildlife and history of the former depot. There will be a 5-person minimum for
each tour at a cost of $40 per person. Reservations can be made on line at
www.senecawhitedeer.org or by calling 315-759-8220.

Come experience the birds, the ghost deer, the military history and much more.
There is only one place like it on our planet – the Seneca Army Depot!

 Sincerely,
Dennis Money, President, Seneca White Deer Inc.  Chris Lajewski, Center
Director, Montezuma Audubon Center

Clyde River at Mays Point, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Six Bald Eagles

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Muckrace Sept. 18-19 Register Now!

2015-08-05 Thread Chris Lajewski

19th Annual Montezuma Muckrace — September 18-19th, 2015

Be sure to save the date for one of the favorite annual fundraising events in
the Montezuma Wetlands Complex - the 19th annual Montezuma Muckrace.   The
Muckrace, organized by the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, is a
24-hour birding competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 18th
and 19th.  That’s one week later than usual to avoid the busy Labor Day and
back-to-school week.  Mid-September is a great time to be birding at the
Complex. This globally-significant Important Bird Area supports a million or
more waterfowl of at least 30 species, thousands of inland migrating
shorebirds, a myriad of ‘confusing’ fall warblers and many rare and endangered
species.  The 242-square mile Montezuma Focus Area, which was highlighted under
the North American Waterfowl Management Plan as critical migratory bird
habitat, serves as the boundary for the Muckrace.  Teams register under several
categories (Competitive, Youth, Low-Carbon, Photo, Family/Mentor, or
Recreational) and bird together from 7:00 PM Friday until 7:00 PM Saturday,
trying to locate as many bird species as possible. Winning teams over the past
several years have identified as many as 148 species, and collectively, as many
as 192 species have been seen by the 15 to 28 teams, in a single day.   This
event, now in its 19th year, has grown in popularity and set records for
participation in each of the past 3 years.  Some say it is the cool
custom-designed T-shirts that everyone is collecting.  Others say it is the
prizes, made possible by over 25 generous sponsors, including top sponsor: Wild
Birds Unlimited at Sapsucker Woods.  In addition to thefunds donated by
sponsors, money is also raised through pledges sought by participants.  Event
organizers include the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, N.Y.S.
Department of Environmental Conservation, Audubon NY and the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, and over 2 dozen volunteers.  The Montezuma Audubon Center,
2295 Route 89, Savannah, NY will serve as the event headquarters, with
participants returning to this site at the finish on Saturday to compile their
checklists, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy recapping highlights of the day.
Over the 19 years that the Muckrace has been in existence, funds have supported
the restoration of wetlands, the regeneration of important wildlife habitat,
and the expansion of environmental education and public use facilities.   For
more information, including 2015 Montezuma Muckrace registration and
sponsorship details, visit the Friends website at www.friendsofmontezuma.org.

[cayugabirds-l] Habitat Gardening Workshop at the Montezuma Audubon Center April 18

2015-04-16 Thread Chris Lajewski
Sat. April 18, 10:00 a.m. –11:30 a.m. at the Montezuma Audubon Center
Nature of Montezuma Lecture – Creating a Bird Friendly Yard
Do you enjoy watching birds in your yard? Learn some interesting facts about
some of CNY's favorite backyard birds, such as hummingbirds and chickadees, and
learn how to enhance your yard so it provides habitat to even more birds. Janet
Allen, present and co-founder of the local Wild Ones chapter of Habitat
Gardening in Central New York will present this workshop. Like other creatures,
birds need food, water, cover, and a place to raise young. You can meet their
needs by planting native plants and providing some other essential ingredients.
Finally, learn how you can help conserve birds beyond your own yard. Create a
bird-friendly yard and enjoy the daily companionship of birds right at home!
Fee: $4/child, $6/adult, $20/family, free for Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands
Complex. Call 315-365-3588 to register today! The Montezuma Audubon Center is
located at 2295 State Route 89, Savannah, NY 13146.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Muckrace, September 12-13

2014-06-09 Thread Chris Lajewski
Be
sure to save the date for one of the favorite annual fundraising events in the
Montezuma
Wetlands Complex - the 18th annual Montezuma Muckrace.   The
Muckrace, organized by the Friends group, is a 24-hour birding competition
scheduled for Friday and
Saturday, September 12th and 13th.  That’s one week later than usual
to avoid the busy Labor Day and back-to-school week.

Mid-September is a great time to be birding at
the Complex. Thisglobally-significant Important Bird Area supports a million or
more
waterfowl of at least 30 species, thousands of inland migrating shorebirds, a
myriad of ‘confusing’ fall warblers and many rare and endangered species.  The
242-square mile Montezuma Focus Area, which
was highlighted under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan as critical
migratory bird habitat, serves as the boundary for the Muckrace.

Teams register under several
categories (Competitive, Youth, Low-Carbon, Photo, Family/Mentor, or
Recreational)
and bird together from 7:00 PM Friday until 7:00 PM Saturday, trying to
locate as many bird species as possible.  Winning
teams over the past several years have identified as many as 148 species, and
collectively, as many as 192 species have been seen by the 15 to 28 teams, in a
single day.  The winning competitive team
in 2013 logged 139 species.  But, being
an expert is hardly a requirement for enjoying the Muckrace.  Many other
birders of all ages and experience
joined in on the fun under the various recreational categories, including the
newest ‘Photo Category’, where participants count only the birds they can
identify and photograph.

This event, now in its 18th year, has grown in popularity and set records for
participation in each of the
past 2 years.  Some say it is the cool
custom-designed T-shirts that everyone is collecting.  Others say it is the
prizes, made possible by
over 25 generous sponsors, including top sponsor: Wild Birds Unlimited at
Sapsucker Woods.  In addition to the funds donated
by sponsors, money is also raised through pledges sought by participants.

Event
organizers include the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, N.Y.S.
Department
of Environmental Conservation, Audubon NY and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service,
and over 2 dozen volunteers.  The
Montezuma Audubon Center, 2295 Route 89, Savannah, NY will serve as the event
headquarters, with participants returning to this site at the finish on
Saturday to compile their checklists, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy recapping
highlights of the day.

Over the 18 years that the Muckrace has been
in existence, funds have supported the restoration of wetlands, the
regeneration of important wildlife habitat, and the expansion of environmental
education and public use facilities.  The 2013
competition accounted for over $10,600 in donations.  To date, a portion of
these funds were used last
winter to continue a flyway-wide winter banding program for the American Black
Duck.

For more information, including 2014 Montezuma
Muckrace registration and sponsorship details, consult the Friends website at
www.friendsofmontezuma.org.

[cayugabirds-l] Green Heron in Seneca Falls

2014-04-13 Thread Chris Lajewski
There was a nice variety of songbirds along the sculpture trail in Seneca Falls
Sunday morning. A huge surprise was one GREEN HERON that perched in a tree for
a few minutes before flying down the Erie Canal. I wonder if this is the same
bird seen in TN and PA earlier in the week :-)  See my eBird checklist below.

Montezuma Audubon Center's Education Manager Chris Lajewski will lead a Birding

birding hotspots that are normally off limits to vehicular traffic where dozens
of species of waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds can be seen and heard!
Participants can expect to walk short distances and are encouraged to bring
their camera and binoculars. Fee: $7.50/child; $12.50/adult. Space
is limited and registration is required. Please call 315-365-3588 or e-mail
