[cayugabirds-l] Adult Bald Eagle helps Juvenile with hunting skills

2021-08-17 Thread Dave K
Distant photos (in video format 15 sec) show an adult Bald Eagle that has just
landed on Know-Marcellus with a duck in talons.
The Adult appears to call to a nearby juvenile. The Juv flies to the adult and
at the right moment the adult releases the duck and moves out of the way. The
juvenile then proceeds to capture the fleeing duck.
Feeding or training, I'd never seen this before.

The Roseate Spoonbill at Montezuma NWR, which was seen by many on July 11th in
a pond along the Wildlife Drive by I-90 and the giant Bald Eagle Stature, flew
with a Great Egret toward Tschache Pool early that evening.

It has been seen several times in Tschache Pool in the company of one or more
Great Egrets both on the 12th and today the 13th as recently as early this
afternoon. As I understand it these views are distant and some were brief views
in flight. Because Tschache Pool is closed to the public and mostly heavily
vegetated, I believe all those views were from the tower along NYS-89 just
north of I-90 (although sometimes some open water can be seen from farther
north along NYS-89), looking at the few large areas of open water at the edges
while keeping an eye open for overflights.

Still, if you want to see a big pink bird with a uniquely wacky bill, and you
either don’t have or don’t want to use psychedelic drugs, Tschache Pool may be
your best bet.

Lots of people submitted photos of this Roseate Spoonbill to eBird. Some of my
favorites are by Dave Kennedy (feeding), by Mark Miller (shaking after
bathing), and Gary Chapin (flying). The latter 2 show the black margins to the
primary tips. The photos can be found by going to “My eBird” then “Alerts” and
calling up Seneca County NY which gives all reports of rarities for the past 7
days (so this offer expires on the 18th), then “details” for individual
reports’ remarks & photos. There are also a bunch of photos on the Birds of
Montezuma Facebook page (a site put together by photographers, not the official
NWR site).

As you may know, I try to keep track of annual first records of bird species in
the Cayuga Lake Basin in a table on the Cayuga Bird Club website’s Resources
page. So I’ve been trying to figure out who found this bird, and I’m happy to
credit multiple independent finders. So far this is what I have, all on July
11th:

Ginger Bernardin submitted an eBird list from the Wildlife Drive from 8-9:30am
including a brief description and a photo of the spoonbill. But before this
eBird list showed up in eBird’s rare birds reports, other folks independently
encountered the Roseate Spoonbill, so they get credit, too.

Dianne Dean Quintavalle and her husband (who deserves some credit but I saw no
name for him) saw and recognized the bird through a telescope at a viewing
platform on the Wildlife Drive. They were unable to photograph it, but she
started a conversation on the Birds of Montezuma Facebook page at 9:59am
confirming that she saw a pink bird with a spoon bill which she named as
Roseate Spoonbill.

Karen Gellman replied in that conversation that she had also seen the bird by
about 11am but had trouble reporting it to eBird because Roseate Spoonbill is
not part of eBird’s NE US regional repertoire. By 11:23 she had posted photos
of the bird to that facebook page, and she later submitted those photos to
eBird for that time.

Linda Harvey and Angela Rider both managed overcome such obstacles and
submitted incidental single bird reports for Roseate Spoonbill to eBird at
11:13 & 11:17 respectively, both from the Thruway Pools along the Wildlife
Drive. These reports piqued the interest of eBird followers, yet left folks
wondering if these unprecedented reports were real, because neither report
included any details of ID or evidence that would separate the reports from the
occasional person horsing around with an absurd report (yes, that does happen)
or a wild error of some sort (that also happens). I have generally stopped
crediting empty reports of rarities. The exception which applies here is when
the report which lack details or evidence manages to help other observers to
find the bird and provide those details &/or that evidence. So they get credit.
Scouts went looking.

Meanwhile an eBird report submitted later by Zeke VanZante for the Wildlife
Drive says it started at 11:15am (right in between the previous 2 eBird
reports) and spent 2 hours to travel 5 miles. He provides a photo of the
Roseate Spoonbill from near the start of the Wildlife Drive, and says he also
saw a/the Spoonbill at the end of the drive, making him wonder if there were 2
Spoonbills. Regardless of precise timing and the flights of the bird, this is
an independent valid report, so this name is included.

And the scouts alerted on account of eBird reports indeed

Folks - a question.
Today I watched a male Cardinal in a cherry tree. He was picking at the
blossoms, putting them in his mouth, then quickly discarding them. He was
grabbing them from the stem end and not the blossom end. He was doing it for
quite some time. The path beneath the trees was covered with discarded blossoms.
Any idea(s)?
Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Diving Mallard Video

2021-03-06 Thread Dave K
I've seen Mallards diving along the Cayuga Lake SP shore this season, maybe
more than usual, maybe not.
Yesterday I had a chance to watch one diving at Oak Island in Waterloo.
The Mallard flock gathers around a Hen with a visible, bright speculum (top
left of video) that is diving for food.
If diving is a learned behavior the 100 other Mallards aren't getting it and
she's the only one eating.
The melee continues until the Domestics move in and break it up.

[cayugabirds-l] Gyrfalcon with Mallard

2021-02-23 Thread Dave K
~5PM I came across the Gyrfalcon that had a Mallard on a field South of Seneca
Iron Works. The Mallard was still moving when I arrived but I didn't see the
catch. The Gyrfalcon had to fend off two hawks but managed to keep its prey.
Between hawks and despite traffic it fed steadily and eventually left the
Mallard and flew to a tree perch on the West edge of the field.

[cayugabirds-l] Always something to see

2021-02-18 Thread Dave K
While watching WW Scoters at Willard Town Park today, one caught a
crayfish..when reviewing pics at home later, one of the Scoters appears to
have had a saltwater crab attached to its chest.as the WW Scoter rises to
stretch its wings the crab is visible, appears to detach and be caught by
Scoter. Hmm, did the scoter just arrive from a salt water location...how did
the crab survive the sub freezing flight (or did it)is that a crab defense?
Always something to see.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon continues

2020-12-17 Thread Dave K
Went out hoping for some roadside birds after a ~6inch snowfall overnight but
didn't see a one,
Came across the Gyrfalcon pole sitting and managed some pics...
https://www.flickr.com/photos/105424358@N06/50730304126/in/datetaken/
before it flew to a tree overlooking a goose flock. The geese did not seem
concerned by this.
A jittery mixed flock of Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs were
distant in a field North of Stahl Rd.

When I first saw this bird it was head first and had a Yellow/green hue.
That color is not very pronounced in the pics but can be seen on the throat.
Looked at alot of Junco pics without a good match.
Maybe a late nesting immature?
Seen today on the West side of Hoster near the end of the pine row just South
of Stahl.

[cayugabirds-l] Albino Canada Goose gosling Larues Lagoon

2020-05-27 Thread Dave K
I saw the albino Canada Goose gosling this AM on the edge of the Main Pool
across from Larues Lagoon. First time I've seen it since April 30th. With
'family' group and tended to by parent. Active but 1/3-1/2 the size of its
apparent siblings. Red eye evident today.

Not to argue but I thought Call Ducks averaged 1.5-2x bigger than Teal which is
why I didn't suggest it. I added a pic that shows a face patternmaybe BW
Teal?.but it might be a shadow. Very small crop from a distant pic but
visible if you enlarge it.

I'm looking at this bird now. It is almost the same size as nearby GW Teal, but
the proportions seem different, and the bill is very yellow. I'm inclined to
think it's a small domestic Mallard, maybe a call duck.

There is a Bald Eagle laying at the base of pole#292 on the road bordering the
Sandhill Crane Unit near the end of Van Dyne Spoor. This year's hatch
likely.no bands or tags that I could see. Trauma to left wing, may have hit
a wire.

[cayugabirds-l] Scouting party or wrecking crew?

2018-08-11 Thread Dave K
A group of the usuals (minus one plus an Amish guy) went on a 'scouting trip'
at Knox-Marcellus on Friday preceding Saturdays 'Public Walk'.
Of course, they flushed many of the birds, pushing them away from the dikes and
some, including the Ruff, out of the area.
How could any right minded person think this scouting adventure would have a
positive impact on so many who waited until the scheduled time Saturday morning.
I've only seen reports from one scout so I don't know if any of the others even
bothered to show up today. But hey., they got theirs, right?
Today's participants deserved better.
So elitist and exclusionary.

I think you're right.it does seem better, but not because of any
intentional improvements. Traffic and weather have smoothed it out a bit. There
are some deep ruts that could strand you in almost any vehicle but there are
paths around them. The drought like conditions made it fairly easy to get to
the first dyke. Personally, I won't go there after these rains as the worse
will be camouflaged with water and the mud is extremely greasy with the
potential of sliding you into ruts.

There is always something to see down Towpath but with the Knox-Mar water so
far to the North it's about as close viewing the meat of it from East Rd.

Good luck.

Dave K.

will be camouflaged with water and the mud is extremely greasy with the
potential of sliding you into ruts.

There is always something to see down Towpath but with the Knox-Mar water so
far to the North it's about as close viewing the meat of it from East Rd.

Good luck.

Dave K.
