[cayugabirds-l] Leucitic Birds
I have noticed several species with leucitic traits this summer. A Common Grackle that was nearly cream colored with a light beak, a Northern Cardinal that was white on chest neck and head with pink and red highlights on wings, crest, and tail, and an American Robin with one white wing. I may see one such bird now and then but this seems unusual. Thoughts? I also noticed some early migrants down in SW PA. A WTSP for one. Here several months early. Wondering fires in Canada have resulted in poor nesting and food acquisition and hence early migration. Anyone else heard of any research on the impact of the fires on migration? [cayugabirds-l] Dead blue jay and starlings disease?
In the space of two hours I found a dead blue jay and starling in my yard. I could tell the starling hadn’t been doing well as it seemed unstable and not moving much on the ground. Then found it dead. I read about the mysterious illness impacting these birds with an epicenter near Washington, D.C. https://www.npr.org/local/305/2021/06/16/1007154493/blue-jays-grackles-other-birds-dying-from-mysterious-ailment I wondered if this is impacting birds in NY? No signs of any injury or cat attack to the birds I found and the starling seemed to have some neurological issues. I buried both before I read about this. They are recommending taking down feeders and removing bird baths (I always keep mine clean) but I don’t want to do this if not necessary. Interested to know what others know/think?
