[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks

2010-10-25 Thread Kevin Cummings
Hi all,

I was surprised and very excited to find a flock of at least 13 EVENING
GROSBEAKS (5 M, 8 F) in our yard on Beam Hill Rd on Sat AM. They seemed to
split their time between eating at our feeders and feeding in deciduous
trees (mostly beech, I believe). We have been in this house since Jan of
2002, and this was our first yard sighting. About half as many were evident
on Sun AM, but I didn't see any today. Other recent highlights include
several PURPLE FINCHES for the last week or so, as well as a RUFFED GROUSE
on Fri.

[cayugabirds-l] Beam Hill birds

2010-05-10 Thread Kevin Cummings
Hi all,

There were a number of cool birds (literally) in the yard this weekend
despite the hideous weather: BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, OVENBIRD, a
stunning male INDIGO BUNTING, 4 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS (3 M, 1 F),
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, VEERY, and HERMIT THRUSH. The Veery is presumably
the same individual who has returned for the last several years, based on
what seems like atypical behavior for this species: this bird frequently
forages on the ground around the birch tree where I scatter seed. Granted,
this area is at the edge of the woods, but seeing a Veery foraging on the
ground among Juncos, Chipping Sparrows, Mourning Doves, and Red-winged
Blackbirds seems a bit odd. I assume the Veery is feasting on invertebrate
prey rather than the seed itself.
