Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Final numbers from 2024 Christmas Bird Count

All:

After some late additions and some forensic investigation of sightings, I've
finally settled on what I believe will be the final numbers from the count.

It was an epic year. We had a total of 97 species on the day and a
record-breaking 107 for the week (previous record was 104 in 2008.) 47540
individual birds were observed by 159 humans.

New species for the count were Wilson's Warbler, Northern Parula and Trumpeter
Swan.

We had record high counts (or ties) for the following species:

  *   Cackling Goose
  *   Canada Goose
  *   Trumpeter Swan
  *   Red-throated Loon
  *   Common Loon (tie)
  *   Golden Eagle (tie)
  *   Barred Owl (tie)
  *   Short-eared Owl
  *   Red-bellied Woodpecker
  *   Hairy Woodpecker
  *   Pileated Woodpecker
  *   Merlin
  *   Tufted Titmouse
  *   Brown Creeper
  *   Golden-crowned Kinglet
  *   Ruby-crowned Kinglet
  *   Gray Catbird (tie)
  *   Chipping Sparrow
  *   Dark-eyed Junco
  *   White-throated Sparrow
  *   Song Sparrow
  *   Northern Cardinal
  *   American Goldfinch
  *   European Goldfinch (tie)

Full details are in the spreadsheet which can be found
here.
 If anyone has any last-minute corrections, let me know before I submit the
numbers to Audubon (in about a week).

I've found a volunteer to take over this role next year, so this is my last
report. It's been fun doing this!

-Paul

Ditto to what Carol reported. Mary Jean, Phil and I walked the Black Diamond
yesterday between Garrett and Glenwood Heights (met Carol and Lisa) and had a
similar selection of birds. A couple of additional birds included bluebirds,
junco, pileated, tree sparrow. We missed the flicker and Red breasted

Walked on Black Diamond yesterday between Glenwood Heights and Garrett Road .
Very birdy. Saw at least 4 Golden Crowned Kinglets with their crowns blazing,
along with many Chickadees, Titmice, some Robins, Downy, Hairy, Red Bellied,
Flickers, Cardinal, White Breasted and Red Breasted Nuthatches. Heard a White

Happy New Year to everyone!

As many of you already know, we had the compilation meeting on January 2nd.
Below is a summary of the results. Anyone who wants to see the full gory
details can look at the spreadsheet at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1idhZGODnoTHzDGT80ELsBKWU8JOd2MY6x25fvSXYlq0/edit?usp=sharing.

Caveat: we're still working on this, so some of the numbers will change, mostly
those that involve birds seen on the lake.

161 people spent 360 hours covering about 600 miles of ground.

97 species on the day. So far there are these count week species: Ross's Goose,
Wood Duck, Fish Crow. There were no significant rarities.

High counts: Gadwall, Wigeon, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Common Loon, Red-necked
Grebe, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagle, Lesser
Black-backed Gull, Peregrine Falcon, Common Raven, Hermit Thrush.

No record low counts, although the House Sparrow count was almost there.

41,181 individual birds.

Thanks to everyone who helped, especially the area leaders, Stephanie, and
Matt. Also thanks to Kevin and Jay for furnishing photos used in the
presentation.

I've been to check on Loons over Seneca Lake three times so far, and don't have
much to report. Each day has shown under a dozen Loons. Guessing they haven't
had a reason to move yet. A lot of south winds.

Yesterday two Great Black-backed Gulls flew low right overhead, emitting some
of the most eerie calls I've ever heard and today three Common Loons were
calling from mid lake.

Is anyone watching for Loons on Cayuga this year?

A number of goldfinch at my feeder in W. Danby have eye disease. They’re so
disoriented they often land on me as a perch trying to find the feeders, which
I scrub each week with warm water and a touch of bleach. Is the LabofO still
keeping tabs on this? If so where to report my data. Other thoughts? It seems
fatal since I’ve found three dead in past 2 months with the ‘glue eye’
diagnostic. I gather their deaths are probably for lack of feeding acumen due
to blindness more than anything. (BTW I only get the list digest here so
include me in any response.) Thx, Peter

Re: [cayugabirds-l] A great read for birders to consider by Bryan Pfeiffer

2021-12-09 Thread Stephanie P. Herrick
I like this idea Bob, for two reasons:

1. It benefits two worthy and appropriate local groups
2. The very act of making a mindful contribution encourages us to reflect on
why we are doing it

Thanks for suggesting! Looking forward to others thoughts!

Me too (a movement here?).

And I have one small idea on how to deal with it. Bird clubs organize field
trips, and participation is free. What if each participant was encouraged (not
required, just encouraged) to donate - say - $10 to either the Land Trust or
the SPCA? The Land Trust because they are a major player in habitat
conservation, and the SPCA because they (and I’d have to check this out) play a
role in reducing the number of feral/outdoor cats. Local organizations, local
impact.

Could something like this fly?

Better said than I could have, though such concerns have been brewing for me a
long time. So, how do we deal with it? As individuals, as organizations, as
unorganized groups? Thoughts welcome.

Thanks John.

Yes I had also read that, with great interest. Lots to think about. I embrace
these thoughts fully.

[cayugabirds-l] Leucistic dark eyed junco

2019-11-09 Thread Stephanie P. Herrick
Great start to Project Feederwatch... had an adult male dark eyed junco with a
distinctive white cap beneath my feeders today. Got a shot with my phone with
a normal colored one behind him.
