We did not know what to expect from the storm, and so erred on the side of caution. That also left us time to get around the refuge to assess any damage. We were lucky, compared to so many, to have missed the destruction of this super storm. We do have a vehicle counter to keep track of use along the Wildlife Drive and are aware of road conditions. We have our staff, a National Parks Service staff person, and several volunteers working on the Dry Marsh restoration project along the Drive. This restoration project was designed and is being implemented to improve wildlife habitat -- create diversity -- in that area of the Dry Marsh, which is a monotypic stand of cattail, and has been situated close to the Drive in order to give our visitors the benefit of added wildlife watching opportunities. Diversity of habitat leads to healthy habitat, and these small pools we've created is a step in that direction. Montezuma is a national wildlife refuge. Therefore, wildlife needs, health, safety, etc., come first as we manage these lands and waters. At times, this may inconvenience our visitors, but we strive to keep you informed. There have been news and newsletter articles, web posts, posters, signs, public meetings, and personal communications about this project since it's inception. Please keep in mind that we have a small staff and a big job to do. I know you all enjoy the fruits of our labors! We do our best to serve wildlife and to serve you. Sometimes we fall short of being all things to all people. Just know that we are in this profession because we love it, we care, we take it seriously, and we come to work every day to do our best. Becoming a member of the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex and following us on FaceBook are two ways you can be better connected to the refuge. Becoming a refuge volunteer is even better! Our volunteers are our embassadors, moving in their communities and spreading word about the refuge. As a volunteer, you form relationships with other volunteers and staff, and through those relationships, you gain intimate day-to-day knowledge about this place and our work. In turn, you can help us spread that word! Volunteer opportunities are available year-round here. Give the refuge office a call (315-568-5987, extension 228) or email Andrea at andrea_vanbeusic...@fws.gov to find out what volunteer opportunities lie in store for you! Thanks! Re: [cayugabirds-l] Larues
Hi Ann, the diging you saw is being done to provide more open water in the dry marsh. The soil that is being removed will be used to raise the Wildlife Drive. This soil can not be removed form the Refuge as it may contain nematodes and other undesierable things that might be invasive. - Original Message - From: Ann Mitchell To: CAYUGABIRDS-L Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 7:09 PM Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Larues Hi All, I was at Montezuma today, and noticed that the workers were rototilling at Larues. The ground was dry and, hopefully, will have some water soon. YES! I did not have a scope with me, so I had to rely on 10 power binos. At the Visitor Center around 2:30 P.M. there were both Yellow Legs, a Stilt and two Great Egrets. At the shorebird spot, nothing new. Both areas have a lot of vegetation. Anyone know what is going on at the back side of the wild life drive? There is fantastic dirt there that could be sold as a fund raiser. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Juncos learn new trick, Lab feeder favs
Juncos have been eating from my sock feered for the last two years. - Original Message - From: Caroline Manring To: cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu Sent: Saturday, January 22, 2011 5:55 PM Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Juncos learn new trick, Lab feeder favs The Juncos that have frequented my porch floor under the feeder for a few years have started coming to the feeder perches! These perches are about shoulder-height on a hanging cylindrical feeder, two floors up on a back porch downtown. I was very surprised. I think it might be because the usual cloud of House Sparrows has departed for somebody else's porch, and with just a few Chickadees and a Titmouse left, no one's knocking enough seed down onto the floor for the Juncos anymore. I'd never seen Juncos come to a hanging feeder, high up, and perch while they eat. Anybody else's Juncos doing similar tricks? Also, my mother's Tree Sparrows in Skaneateles have been perching on and eating from the suet (also hanging shoulder-height). It seems these ground birds have more tricks up their sleeves than I thought. At the Lab bird garden today, some highlights were PURPLE FINCH female, and our favorite FIELD SPARROW vagabond. Yesterday a pair of COMMON RAVENS flew over Sapsucker calling to each other.
