While driving the usual airport-Neimi Rd loop for crows this evening, we saw a
flock of approx. 20 Cedar Waxwings by the pond unit trees.

The local northeast area of Ithaca Merlin returned last week. I saw the Merlin
while looking for the crows. Initially heard then seen chasing whomever
possible near St. Catherine's Church on Siena X Blackstone. The Merlin has
been flying around the neighborhood since then.

We saw the Armitage Rd Prothonotary Warbler with a flock of Yellow Warbler and
Yellow Rump Warblers after lunch today. He sat on the end of a branch along
Armitage Rd. providing excellent views!

While driving back to Ithaca from Montezuma this afternoon we spotted fourteen
immature bald eagles in a field north of Heart and Hand Winery on Rte 90.

This past week we have enjoyed an amazing number of White-throated Sparrows in
the yard. Yesterday there were over twenty male and female White-throated
Sparrows between the front and back yards. I've never had that many here...are
others finding relatively large numbers by their bird
Last evening we watched a family of Merlins in the northeast area of Ithaca.
We first saw them preening in the trees on Hanshaw near Orchard after the
thunder storm had passed. They flew to the trees near St. Catherine's Church

Late afternoon yesterday, we saw both adult Bald Eagles out of the nest, one
was perched in a nearby tree, while the other hunted in the fields on the other
side of Route 90. When the hunter returned s/he sat on the nest edge and
seemed to be feeding someone.

On the way home from birding the Montezuma area yesterday afternoon, we saw a
white wing Turkey Vulture over the DEC check station. It drifted low over the
station, so we were able to get an excellent look at the white pattern. It
eventually moved north and out of sight.

For those who may be interested, yesterday Don and I drove up the lake to
Montezuma to check on the Bald Eagle activity. Both the Mudlock pair and the
Tschache Pool pair were observed mating several times. We were hoping to
observe the others, but did not.

Yesterday afternoon we birded the upper end of the lake and around Montezuma.
On our way home we checked the Mudlock Bald Eagles and saw an adult and a
juvenile sitting in a tree at the point. After a bit the adult took off and
gathered nesting materials which it carried to a tree just north
This morning a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was in the trees on the north side of
the intersection of Triphammer Road with Winthrop in Ithaca.

This evening about 6 pm, we saw an Osprey hovering over the pond near the
Tompkins County airport. It eventually flew over to the ponds on Niemi Rd and
hunted before flying off.

Yesterday afternoon we saw an adult Northern Shrike in a tree near the gate at
Tschache Pool, and a light morph Rough-legged Hawk in the fields on Route 89
south of Goose Haven.
Today we saw the Van Dyne Spoor Northern Shrike, but not the one at Tschache.

Sunday afternoon we returned to MWR to get more views of the Marbled Godwit,
even though we had plenty of photos from Saturday. We did not find the Marbled
Godwit, but did see 3 Wilson's Snipe along the mudflats near the edge of the
drive at the new shorebird area.
