[cayugabirds-l] Barred owl

There is a barred owl hooting up the hill from our home on Turkey hill right 
now at 6 pm . I can’t recall one hooting so in-close to sunset. How unusual is 
that?

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl flew west

I went looking for the Barred Owl yesterday at 3:45-4:10pm. There was a
Pileated Woodpecker calling, and I could not find the owl where Mark had
described. As I walked back to my car, the woodpecker call intensified; and
I heard a scuffle high in the trees, then saw a large grey-backed bird fly
off. I think it was the owl but not 100% sure. It flew west, in the
direction of the medical complex. I drove around there and could not find
it. Would love to see one one day!!! Alas, so close, but yet so far.

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl in Sapsucker Woods

I’d like to thank Mark Chao for his timely report of a snoozing BARRED OWL in 
Sapsucker Woods this noon. Later in the afternoon I slipped/shuffled along the 
trail in from SSW Road towards the lone white pine with the roosting owl. Along 
the way I scored a near-perfect suite of woodpeckers: Pileated, Red-bellied, 
Downy, and then a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER that flew in quietly to a tree right 
beside me.

Owl Dissection & Discussion Workshop


Please join the Audubon staff for our first public owl dissection and 
discussion! Learn how we came to be in possession of these federally protected 
birds and about the management efforts that are occurring in the western U.S. 
If you've ever wanted to see an owl up close and personal, this is your chance! 
There will be an opportunity for each attendee to explore the internal and 
external anatomy of their own study owl if they wish, and to dissect a bird 
while learning all about unique owl adaptations along the way. Gloves, 
dissecting kits, and owls will be provided. All children must be accompanied by 
a parent. PRE-PAID RESERVATIONS REQUIRED by Feb. 28. Fee: $10/child; $15/adult, 
$40/family.

If you are referring to those seen around the Finger Lakes Airport and the Lott 
Farm, yes.  Yesterday, Saturday,  we saw a snowy owl  atop of the grain bins at 
the Lott Farm along rt 414, the tall bins that are at the front of the Empire 
Farm Days grounds.

Sometimes in the Cypress woods of Corkscrew Audubon Swamp in S. Florida we see 
Barred Owls active during daylight. Their calls echo thru the woods. Last time 
there were 4 Barred Owls.
It is fun to show them to others in my scope, along the boardwalk. Sometimes 
they're so close to b'walk you don't need a scope.

Sorry for late post but I was walking to frog barn this am when a large bird 
jumped up From  ground to 12' branch,. On trail between parking area gate and 
fb. Thought Cooper's hawk, stopped, crept forward to find baow staring back w 
big black eyes
Jumped in truck and drove here to VA Beach, pardon typos on phone
Great way to start day!
Saw am white pelicans from Chesapeake bay bridge, mockingbird singing at hotel 
at dusk
Great way to end day!

I’ve been informed by a reliable source that he (human) was doing BARRED OWL 
(voice not playback I think) from Woodleton at 1pm which explains the location 
and the lack of finishing growl.
Also explains the oddness of a mid-day Strix varia aria.
Drat!

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl _SSW, interesting Phoebe call

At 1pm I was just about to set foot on the south end of Podell Boardwalk 
returning from a lunchtime circuit of the pond but lingered to watch 2 HAIRY 
WOODPECKER females chasing each other from tree to tree. Interesting that they 
were both female: much squeaking and peeking but no flicka’ing though they 
landed on the same tree several times and eyeballed each other.

To my east, I thought I heard a weird monotonic dog bark, but then the BARRED 
OWL must have turned to face me because 30 sec later it was a very clear 
WHO_COOKS_FOR_YOU without the following WHO_WA growl on the end. I estimate it 
was in the evergreens by the two gates on Sapsucker Woods but I walked back up 
and scanned for 15 min without a further call or a visual.

Also on this walk, I heard again an unusual call from an EASTERN PHOEBE that I 
noticed a few weeks ago when the first one arrived. At that time, there was 
only one, so the call was spontaneous, but today my attention was drawn to it 
because 2 of them spatted and one landed on a low branch, making both 
straightforward chips and then a soft ‘chi-bew’ (‘bew’  lower than ‘chi’) sound 
that is similar to some other flycatchers, interspersed with the chips. This 
time, it seemed to be a reaction sequence to the ‘fight’. I did not see how far 
away the other one was but think it was within 20’.

I stepped outside tonight at about 10 PM and immediately heard a Barred Owl
calling from the NW.  Earlier this year we heard them from th E to SE.
Makes me wonder if this is part of the same family group or a new individual...

Thanks for this report!

I went out at 7am looking/listening for the Olive-sided Flycatcher (not found). 
Instead, I heard more raucous crows in the forest in the middle of the 
Severinghaus loop, so started scanning. The crows broke off and I had seen 
nothing but a couple of them flying past the same tree when from another 
direction, a large bird flew to a hidden perch behind me. As I got on that, it 
flew a short distance to another perch up in in the mid-canopy and this time I 
got the best view ever of a BARRED OWL looking right back at me with those big 
black optics of its own in lovely morning light. I suspect this is the 
pair-mate of the attacked bird since the crows were going after something 
further away and I heard some sounds that were not Barred Owl 'song' but might 
have been some hoots from the direction of the now departed crows, so thought 
it might have been an attempt to rejoin the pair (that is wild speculation of 
motive, but the sounds were not familiar and were 'hoot-like'). For others 
reference, this time the Owl landed on a maple branch, probably 12-15' away 
from the main trunk, but was reasonably well tucked into the foliage. I would 
probably not have seen it unless I had seen it land, but once found, I took a 
couple steps to  get a great full front view.

Great bird in the morning too!

Migrants seem very slow today (Hawthorns were all but dead and Sapsucker
Woods isn't much better), but Livia and I just had nice looks at a BARRED
OWL with a mouse up on the Severinghaus Trail between the Wilson Trail
intersection and the trailhead on the road. It was up in the canopy on the
west side of the trail.

It was a little breezy last night for owling, but Ann and I decided to 
try and continue a fantastic day of birding into the dark. The first two stops 
on Irish Settlement Rd. didn't produce a single hoot. We drove back on Ellis 
Hollow Creek Road and were surprised by a spontaneously calling Barred Owl out 
over Cascadilla Creek. It was like birding desert; we didn't really need it, 
but it sure was good.

A Black-billed Cuckoo is singing out in the fog at my place this morning, and I 
got an uncommonly nice look at one of the neighborhood Barred Owls, whom I 
surprised in the little creek that flows beside Maple Ave. But there's still no 
Acadian Flycatcher at the usual location south of Station Road.

Another intel question -- has anyone still been seeing the roosting BARRED OWL 
in Sapsucker Woods during the past few days? We were not able to see it during 
Migration Celebration bird walks on Saturday, and will full leaf out, it is 
harder to see into the pines from the trail. If anyone has a recent sighting 
with exact location, please let me know.

The bird seemed very relaxed and sleepy while we were there (SFO group).  I 
went back after class after grabbing my camera from the car and the bird was 
gone.  When I emailed our local group (Broome County--bluewing) Anne Clark 
emailed me back saying that she'd heard "my" owl repeatedly when she was near 
her crows nests.  Makes a person wish they knew (and saw) more in the lives of 
these creatures!

CLO seminar I found a Barred Owl right where you describe, about 30 feet 
up on a branch about a foot out from the main trunk of the tree almost 
over the trail.

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl in yard

At about 9:30 this evening as I let our dog out in the backyard, I saw a 
ghost-like shape rise up off the ground and cross the yard. With a flashlight I 
was able to spot a BARRED OWL hunting actively from the low branches of some 
trees. I have heard Barred Owl calling from the yard on only 2 or 3 occasions 
-- in April and October. We are about 1/2 mile from Sapsucker Woods, where they 
are year-round residents.

[cayugabirds-l] Barred owl at Sapsucker Woods

We saw a barred owl at Sapsucker Woods about 11 AM today.  It was 
being mobbed by 2 crows (not very successfully).  We heard a 
sapsucker tapping there also.  From the Lab viewing area we saw
a yellow warbler, a palm warbler, and a common yellowthroat.

Currently there is a barred owl on the Wilson Trail going towards the gate that 
leads to Sapsucker Woods Road - it is being harassed by crows.

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl at Sapsucker Woods

On the Severinghaus trail at about 8:00 this evening as I was 
approaching the Sapsucker Woods Road entrance, I heard a Barred Owl 
calling, seemingly coming from the East trail. As I got close to the 
gate I stopped to listen again and heard the same call, only this time 
coming from deep in the woods on the North side. Either there are two 
individuals or my ears are playing tricks on me. I tried homing in

on the one to the North, but it didn't call again.

[cayugabirds-l] Barred Owl

Hi All,
Working late and not being outside for most of the day, I decided that  
chores could wait. I stopped by the Lab of O for a walk. Along the  Wilson 
Trail, I came across someone who had just seen 6 RUSTY  BLACKBIRDS on the SW 
side of the Wilson Trail. We both tried to find them  again, but to no avail. I 
continued on the Wilson Trail. As I approached  the Podell Boardwalk, I was 
pleasantly surprised to hear a BARRED OWL  calling at 6:25 P.M. It was on 
the Dryden side of the woods, and called at  least 4 times while I was there.
