I put up a bluebird box on my garden fence early this spring. A pair of bluebirds moved in right away, which was wonderful! I believe they are currently raising/feeding their second clutch of babies. During the raising of the first clutch, I was rarely in the garden and there were no problems.

I was absolutely elated this morning to hear a bluebird singing lustily from the top perch of my feeder station. That's the first bluebird I've ever seen in my yard in the four years I've been living in Ellis Hollow. And as I watched, it flew off to investigate out one of my bluebird houses.

At 12:40 PM on Saturday, a yellow-gaped, gray-headed EASTERN BLUEBIRD nestling appeared at the hole of our nest box in northeast Ithaca. This was the first time I had ever seen the face of any of these nestlings, so I thought it was just taking a cool breath or impatiently looking for a parent.

WE have about 16 nest boxes on poles around our field. Initially they were for bluebirds, and then the tree swallows arrived. Our strategy: the nest boxes are erected in pairs: one for the bluebirds, one for the tree swallows. House sparrows may move into one box in a pair, but not both.
