[cayugabirds-l] Green Heron (Ringwood Rd)

2020-09-14 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
Green Heron spied on this evening’s walk with our dog, in a marshy area at the
top of Ringwood Rd. S/he flew up from the reedy water’s edge to perch on a dead
tree branch, looking for all the world like an important VIP guest wearing a
fancy puffed up coat. Have seen Blue Herons and a verrry occasional American
Bittern (as in 2x over 25 years) in this area. Now my first Green Heron!

[cayugabirds-l] Green heron yard birds

2016-05-22 Thread Kelly Lee Smith
A pair of green herons landed in trees between the house and the barn. By the
time I grabbed my camera & got my sister in law off the phone, they were gone.
First sighting this year; they've have hung in the same trees in past years.
Interesting yard birds!

[cayugabirds-l] Green Heron in Seneca Falls

2014-04-13 Thread Chris Lajewski
There was a nice variety of songbirds along the sculpture trail in Seneca Falls
Sunday morning. A huge surprise was one GREEN HERON that perched in a tree for
a few minutes before flying down the Erie Canal. I wonder if this is the same
bird seen in TN and PA earlier in the week :-)  See my eBird checklist below.

[cayugabirds-l] Green Heron(s) on SSW pond

2013-05-09 Thread Chris Pelkie
I watched a GREEN HERON vault from the base of the big leaning willow to catch
a fish at 710am. This was in the same spot the Prothonotary Warbler HAD been
(not there now) a couple days ago, just for reference, that is along the north
edge of the big pond. If flew toward shore with its catch so was then out of my
sight.

Shortly after, the same or a second Green Heron flew from the center island to
the 'boulder' island (between snag and observatory) and spent a time moving
slowly up through the open branches of the taller trees giving good views. This
bird seemed appreciably smaller than the fishing bird, so it may be 2
individuals. It may also be the same one who flew to the island while i was
looking around, spotting an EASTERN KINGBIRD on the berm as I did yesterday at
noon. A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was the most prominent singer/caller.

As I got out of my car, I saw activity in a tree off the NE corner of the Lab
and saw small birds pestering a RED-TAILED HAWK who flew up from the branch and
over the building holding a large varmint with a rat-like tail, possibly a
MUSKRAT.

[cayugabirds-l] Green heron

2012-07-22 Thread Marla Coppolino
There has been a green heron at my pond for at least the past several days.
It has plenty of grasses and vegetation to hide in, and it seems to hide
itself well from me even in the open, but now that I know it's been around,
I'll keep binoculars handy and will be attentive to keep looking.

Located on Pleasant Valley Rd. in Groton.
