Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspur

2015-02-01 Thread Diane Morton
100s of Horned Larks and Snow Buntings and at least 2 Lapland Longspurs in
this field at 10:20 am today. A red- tailed hawk occasionally comes by and
scatters all these birds and the 100 or so crows. But the birds come back.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspur/ Pheasant

2015-01-31 Thread Jody W Enck
Re the pheasant sighting...
DEC only releases male pheasants in that part of the state as natural
reproduction of pheasants does occur here. Hence, females are not legal game
around central New York.
So, theoretically at least, any female in Cayuga County should be a naturally
hatched bird. Of course, individual who train dogs or who operate licensed
shooting preserves could release hen pheasants.

Pheasants were really common on our farm in southcentral PA when I was growing
up. I love to see them.

Also, RING NECKED PHEASANT male digging in snow in wheat stubble on Dixon Rd
north of Ledyard Rd. near abandoned large old house way back from road.
This is 2nd Pheasant i have seen in this area & the other (female) was also
near an abandoned house, on Rafferty Rd. Houses both w windows gone. Wonder if
they go inside for shelter? They are probably pheasants that have been released
for hunting

[cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspur/ Pheasant

2015-01-31 Thread Donna Scott
LAPLAND LONGSPUR continues NW of Dixon & Ledyard Rds.
West of NY Rt 34B.
Was difficult to locate among the many HORNED LARKS & lesser #s of SNOW
BUNTINGS. I finally saw it: it came onto road w a few H LARKS & I got a great
look in scope for about 2 minutes, then they flew into the field again.

This field NW of Ledyard Rd & Dixon Rd (Town of Ledyard, Cayuga County) had
exposed corn among stubble close to Ledyard Rd, and scores of HORNED LARKS were
easy to see. We initially saw the LAPLAND LONGSPUR with a few of the larks on
the road shoulder, but when they moved north into the field to join the other
larks, we did not spend enough time to refind it. With more patience and less
blowing snow I think it could have been found. Farther NW in that same field,
west of some power lines and north of a low rise, we saw about 20 SNOW BUNTINGS
flying up briefly, perhaps part of a larger group. Again, with less wind and
more patience they might be refound.

[cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspur

2013-01-19 Thread bluewing
Bill Howard and I relocated the Lapland Longspur that was reported yesterday by
Jeff Gerbracht. The bird was on Daisy Hollow Road this morning at the Cornell
Farms. We finally spotted the bird at 11:00 AM. The longspur was in with
dozens of Horned Larks and at least one Snow Bunting. As expected, the birds
were feeding in the manure spreads that run perpendicular to the road.

Patrick reported a Merlin in the area but we dipped on this species.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Lapland Longspur

2011-01-13 Thread Jay McGowan
A few minutes ago I drove over Mount Pleasant, and upon reaching Mineah Road
I found a large flock of birds in the fields to the southwest of the corner
of the two roads. In this flock were at least 150 COMMON REDPOLLS, 60 SNOW
BUNTINGS, and one LAPLAND LONGSPUR.

Good birding.
