Re: [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpiper
Belatedly, I wanted to note that when I found it last week, it was happily lurking amidst the gulls on the point. It was completely hidden by them as they are 3x bigger than it and when clustered together made a complete wall. Then, it is also the same color as the beach rocks. It has been animatedly foraging so watch for moving beach rocks! After scanning the gulls a couple times, then looking away for a while, then scanning them again, lo and behold, I saw a ‘not gull’ head pop up briefly and knew I had found it. A while later, they flew off and gave nice scope views (it didn’t come as close as for some other observers and I didn’t want to fright it off, so I stayed 50’ away). So, keep trying, but it has been there for a while and may have finally beefed up for the next leg of migration. [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpiper
Daughter Becky I saw it last evening for 1/2 hr. until it was too dark to see more. Diana Whiting I had been there before noon watched it. Diana took lots of pix. When Becky got off workat 5 p.m. I took her back to Myers she was delighted to see it. Perhaps we were the last to see it.Coming home I swerved to miss a screech owl sitting in the road at Levanna. I stopped so Beckycould get it off the road before someone came along ran over it. It was under a pole light, maybe getting insects. Tiny as it looked, when it flew we were amazed at the size of the wings. On our way to Myers we saw an adult bald eagle next to the nest tree along the lake shore at GreatGully Farm south of Union Springs. All-in-all, we felt we had a very successful trip. The lake was like glass we saw a bright sun dog. The eventual sunset was beautiful with reflections on the water.Gas was $3.19.9 in Auburn on Mon.. Native Am. squabble continues to keep gas station closed here.Fritzie B.Union Springs -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpiper continues
Also for those seeking the Purple Sandpiper at Myers, there was a nice assortment of ducks south of the lighthouse (viewed from south side of Marina), including 8 SURF SCOTERS, 1 gorgeous male LONG-TAILED DUCK, RING-NECKED, LESSER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCK, AM WIGEONs, and 2 female GREEN-WINGED TEAL. A juv RED-THROATED LOON was swimming offshore of the spit fairly close, but flew north. The PURPLE PIPER gave incredible views in the early afternoon, almost walking across our feet on the north side of the parking area. KEN Kenneth V. [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpiper, Myers Point
A few minutes ago a PURPLE SANDPIPER tried to land on the spit at Myers Point on Cayuga Lake. It circled a half dozen times as it was harried by airborn gulls, finally managed to land at the tip, but was gone a moment later. I'm not sure if it headed back out on the lake or might be hiding on one of the beaches here, but I am not seeing it at the moment. [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpiper Short eared Owls
I made another run to Fairhaven State Park today after not finding Purple Sandpiper at the Irondequoit Bay outlet. The PURPLE SANDPIPER was feeding with a DUNLIN along the south side of the east/west running breakwall. From Fairhaven I drove to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge area. The best birds were two SHORT EARED OWLS along VanDyne Spoor Road seen just before 3:00 PM. Also of note was a dark morph ROUGH LEGGED HAWK at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. Other stops today included the south end of Irondequoit Bay. I could find nothing unusual in the gulls and there were no shorebirds of any kind found on the mudflats. There was a single BELTED KINGFISHER here. At the Irondequoit Bay outlet the only bird of note was a HORNED GREBE in the channel. I made a stop at Sodus Bay thinking the channel or bay might hold some ducks given the rough conditions on the lake. This stop was nearly devoid of waterfowl. The only sightings of note were a RED THROATED LOON in the bay and 3 DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS (1 in the channel and 2 on the east/west breakwall).
