[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbirds

2016-03-01 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

As I was waiting for the bus at BTI, Veronique and I had two Red-winged
Blackbirds fly overhead from northwest to southeast around 4.50 pm. Again
another 15 minutes later I saw one more at the junction of Pine Tree road and
Snyder Hill road.

It was so nice to see them.

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbirds

2016-02-21 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi All,

Just had 14 Red-winged Blackbirds (all males, but in various examples of
transitional plumage) show up at my feeders at 1504 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca as of
1pm. I suspect the Lab’s feeders will be swamped with them soon if they are
not already. Has early March arrived in late February?

Good Birding

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbirds in Canoga

2015-02-23 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday (2/22) I also saw my first RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS of the year, a flock
which eventually added up to about 50 in an overgrown hedgerow on the west side
of NYS-89 just south of Parker Rd in Canoga (town of Fayette, Seneca County),
between a field of standing corn and a log cabin with a large yard. Some birds
went to the back of the cabin where I assume there were feeders, but most were
staying deep within the hedgerow. I didn't see if they were also in the corn.

Susie I were at the Observation Tower at the Visitor Center at MNWR this
evening at 1800. The din of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS was a welcome Spring

the night.

[cayugabirds-l] red winged blackbirds

2013-02-27 Thread Naomi Brewer
Hi All - Yesterday all the usual feeder birds were busy at my feeders. Of
course many more Goldfinch Chickadees than when I needed them for the
GBYBC.

Then Yesterday afternoon 3 Red-winged Blackbirds came to the
suet cake and ate about half of it. They ignored the sunflower tube right
near.

My DE Junco's are no longer ground feeders only. They are at
the hanging suet cake as well as the large tube feeder. That has a small
ledge and is filled with cracked corn, sunflower seeds and nijer seeds.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbirds

2011-03-06 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
Just now from my office window I watched a small flock of Red-winged
Blackbirds. They were actually seeming to head towards west in this snowy
weather.
Yesterday, at Myers I was trying a video camera for its sharpness and range for
a an upcoming project, when I saw two Killdeer at the spit.
I actually did not even the scan the lake, I don't know why. I was planning on
doing it, but it started to rain, so I packed up.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Red Winged Blackbirds/Grackles

2011-03-06 Thread Alicia Plotkin
Hi,

For the first time in the 20 yrs we have been here, our yard with
its two modest feeders has transformed into a set from The Birds -
over a hundred grackles, RW blackbirds, and a few starlings have taken
over the feeders, driving away the usual titmice, nuthatches,
chickadees, goldfinches, cardinals, sparrows, juncos woodpeckers -
even the RB hairy woodpeckers spent the afternoon hovering on the
outskirts rather than challenge the masses of blackbirds.

I know the other birds won't starve - they have been stashing as
much as they've eaten all winter - but I am too cheap to be willing to
feed this army of blackbirds! Will they be able to open black oil
sunflower seed if I convert both feeders to that for awhile? Or is the
only solution to stop feeding for awhile? They aren't interested in the
small nyger feeder that's off to the side but, then again, neither are
most of the regular feeder birds!

 Thanks for any suggestions -

 Alicia
