[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt loons, Caspian tern...

2020-04-07 Thread Marie P. Read
I took a walk at Salt Pt this morning. Highlights were 2 Common Loons foraging
not too far from shore and a Caspian Tern on one of the sand banks...which duly
pulled up a "rare bird, please describe ID" message on eBird! I guess we don't
usually see them there in spring, mostly in late summer post-breeding.

Yes, I am actually atlasing using the eBird app on my phone! Proof that old
fossils can learn new tricks!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Baltimore and Orchard Orioles

2019-07-25 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Today, I had not only my regular Catbirds at the jelly feeder (with half an
orange), but an adult and a juvenile B. Oriole came to feed! They ate suet, as
well as jelly and orange.
At night the flying squirrels eat the jelly & suet, too!

The Baltimore Orioles frequently coming faithfully for grape jelly end of May,
in June and earlier in July have not been seen in at least a week. The catbird
stills comes. Think Orioles must have started moving around—away. I miss
them. They are so beautiful!

2019-07-25 Thread Carol Keeler
There were Caspian Terns at the end of the wildlife drive on Tuesday. They
were rather distant.

My orioles are still here and coming for the jelly. The juveniles were finally
eating jelly on their own. I still have my Grosbeaks coming. I have a pair of
House Wrens nesting in a birdhouse on my shed. I love hearing him sing.

2019-07-25 Thread Magnus Fiskesjo
Wonderful.

I wonder if orioles are around but wandering more widely, after their chicks
are out, and we don't see them because they're not staying put singing any more
but ranging widely wherever there is food? I recently saw several orchard
orioles flying around Hog Hole, and several more of them at Salt point, about 2
weeks ago.

One surprised me by fiercely divebombing-attacking an Osprey which really
didn't seem to have done anything to the oriole (Orchard, male) other than
sitting down on a branch in a tree (a very tall tree across from the railroad,
inland). Maybe the tree was oriole territory.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt. Golden-winged Warbler, Myers Sanderlings

2016-09-09 Thread Jay McGowan
This morning a found a lovely female GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER on Salt Point in
Lansing, at the edge of the trees on the right as you continue past the
gate on the main road that parallels the creek. I followed her as she
foraged along the edge, eventually making her way more to the center of the
point. Other birds nearby included Wilson's, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, and
Blue-winged warblers.

When I returned to my car at Myers Point I found two juvenile SANDERLINGS
foraging along the north shore of the point. They had not been present a
couple of hours earlier when I first checked the spit. The only birds of
note I had on the lake this morning were 10 COMMON TERNS flying up the lake
calling. Other noteworthy landbirds were a MARSH WREN in the cattail patch
in Salmon Creek, migrant BAY-BREASTE and BLACKPOLL near the entrance to
Myers, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH along the edge of the marsh at the railroad
tracks, and my long-awaited first Myers Point RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
foraging near but not in the spruces at the entrance fee booth.

My list from Salt Point with a couple of photos of the Golden-winged here:

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Ospreys

2014-06-28 Thread Donna Scott
Candace Cornell is out of town and asked some of us to check on the Salt Pt.
Ospreys this weekend.

I spent 1.5 + hours observing Ospreys at Salt Pt. with nothing too unusual
happening. I kept seeing 2 chicks.
Then, as I pulled myself out of my low chair to depart, I just missed seeing
the father arrive with a fish (he was already in the nest when I looked back up
at the nest box). I didn't even know if he had brought a fish because I could
not see it.

So, I stood there getting warbler neck watching the nest thru my binocs.
Sure enough, I soon saw Mombrella ripping up a fish and feeding pieces

to

... THREE little dinosaurs!

So, there are 3 chicks in the nest!

I am glad I hung around long enough to see them and to see the feeding. I was
glad to see Mom take a few bites for herself.
Very dedicated parents, these Ospreys!

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Orchard Orioles

2014-05-06 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi everyone,

Well, the light didn't cooperate with my planned trip to Montezuma this
morning, so instead I sidetracked to Salt Pt in Lansing. What a great place
that spot is! The highlight was two male Orchard Orioles singing and engaging
in territorial altercations in trees just a little way down the gated dirt road
(has big concrete barriers). Bob McGuire was there earlier than I was, and he
reports seeing a male chasing a female. One of the trees in which one male
spent a considerable time singing and feeding on the cottonwood catkins had the
remains of an old oriole nest. I wonder if this is where the Orchard Orioles
nested before?

(Some photos to come…)

Other delights included:

Four Buffleheads, a male with three females.
Three Horned Grebes
Two Common Loons
(And a partridge in a…oh no sorry, wrong life…)

Heard one of the loons calling at one point
A very vocal Osprey carrying a large fish
Belted Kingfisher
Warbling Vireos singing everywhere
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Baltimore Oriole
Gray Catbird
Common and Hooded Mergansers
Eastern Bluebird feeding on sumac
Plus the usual suspects

And over in Myers Park, I became captivated with the scores of swallows (mostly
Tree and Barn) foraging by skimming low over the water, on what had by now
become a cool overcast morning. Tried some still images and video of this cool
behavior.

A nice morning jaunt…

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt. Ospreys on nest

2014-04-13 Thread Candace Cornell
The adults at Salt Point, Ophelia and Orpheus, are the mated pair from last
year, arriving at Salt Point on Saturday, April 5. 2014. This will be their
approximate arrival date every spring for as long as they survive. They've
been courting, nesting, and fighting off intruding ospreys, 1-4 at a time,
since their return. But unlike last year when the pair first got together
on April 22, 2013, and had to quickly build a new nest and procreate, the
pair has a bit more leisure time this season to spend flying together or
just perching side-by-side on a branch and getting used to each other after
their long winter separation. Robyn, Paul, and Stevie were the three
chicks from last year who won't return to this area, assuming they all
survive, until April of 2016.

Last year's chicks were named for the three people instrumental in putting
up the SP platform--Lab of O's Robyn Bailey, NYSEG's Paul Paradine, and T of
Lansing's Park Rec. Dir. Steve Colt. The three are responsible for
another new platform this year on Myers Hill Rd, just inland from the Myers
Park entrance. The platform is attracting the attention of at least four
ospreys over the last four days. Today was the first day I saw a female in
the nest, but others saw an adult in it Saturday. The Portland Point pair
have been nesting since Thursday, April 3, as far as I can tell. That's the
latest O buzz in Lansing. There's lots of ospreys around Ithaca right now
as well!

They are there right now but I am not sure if they are Robyn and Paul as
I didn't study them last year.

I'm at Myers Point, Lansing. There are some Horned Grebes and a Common
Loon. Nothing unusual at the moment.
