I have bought straight suet from grocery meat departments & packed it 
into wherever I wanted or into mesh bags that fruit &/or vegetables have 
come in or into store bought suet feeders.

For you that don't know, packaged FAT, often with bits of meat attached 
& that may have a bit of blood & which some meat cutters may think you 
want or that can be pushed off on the unsuspecting, is not what you 
want. You want hard suet only.  It is naturally hard & is the white fat 
that comes from around the loins & kidneys of cattle & sheep.
Lard is rendered fat that comes from pigs & it usually stays soft at 
room temperature. In fact, in many countries it is used as butter!
Butchers used to give it to me free but at holiday time it is used to 
make minced meat so the price on it then is about as much as roast beef.

Another potential way of getting suet from beef that is organically grow would 
be to check with the vendors who sell meat at local farmers markets and see 
what they have.

Instead of going to trouble of making cylinders of suet, I just spread the fat 
mix into my feeding log holes with a little spatula.
It stays in the holes better than some commercially-made suet cylinders.

This used to work well with “Bark Butter” from Wild Birds Unlimited.

Make your own!  Easy with a double boiler.  Plenty of recipes on internet.  I 
use lard, peanut butter, instant oats and a wee bit of corn meal (to thicken 
it).  No millet or other useless fillers.  Better than smelly beef fat too.  
Any tapered mold works to cast the block.   I use one of the plastic squares 
from a commercial suet cake and oil it for easy release.

I love Pine Tree Farms - nice people, good prices - and we get all our 
seed and suet there, but have never seen any suet there that didn't have 
seeds or peanuts in it.  You could try calling first - 607-532-4311. 
They also might have ideas for where to get some.  In decades of bird 
feeding, I don't think I've ever encountered it myself.

Don't know if they will have what you are looking for, but you could try
Pine Tree Farms in Interlaken, where they make suet blocks, logs etc. You
have to go during business hours but they are usually very helpful.

I have a question for everyone regarding suet. Since we know that pesticides 
and other harmful human chemicals including industrial agriculture antibiotics 
accumulate in the fat of mammals how healthy can animal suet from animal 
agriculture actually be for birds. I have never seen anyone mention or consider 
this. I have tried to look it up but cannot find anything. Just going by my own 
understanding of the food chain and bioaccumulation I’m  relying on my common 
sense. I mix organic peanut butter and organic cornmeal and use that.

Yes. I’m not a microbiologist, but when I see things like the following, I 
wonder how much effect the pesticide and herbicide and biocide components in 
cow have on the formation of kidney and loin fat that we put in suet 
containers. I imagine that hatever is there must have a greater effect on their 
small bodies than it does on human bodies.

From  (slightly condensed)

Cows, pigs, chickens and sheep can all be directly dosed with pesticides to 
prevent pest infestation in the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions that 
exist on factory farms. But perhaps more important is the extent to which 
animals are exposed to crop pesticides through their food.

Pesticide residues are found in meat and animal byproducts, including, 
disturbingly, long-banned 
pesticides like DDT. 
These pesticides mostly come from the food that animals eat and end up getting 
stored in their fat, accumulating over time.

Unfortunately government agencies charged with ensuring the safety of our food 
are not taking adequate action. The Office of Inspector General 
found that the U.S. Department 
of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug 
Administration did not do enough to protect the public from pesticides, 
veterinary drugs and heavy metals in meat…

Environmental Working Group estimates that a whopping 167 million pounds of 
pesticides
 are used each year just to grow food for animals in the United States. For 
glyphosate, the most commonly used pesticide in the world, 
residues
 allowed in animal feed can be more than 100 times that allowed on grains 
consumed directly by humans, and the amount of glyphosate 
allowed
 in red meat is more than 20 times that for most plant crops.

So we are essentially dousing animal food, typically genetically engineered 
corn and soy, with so much pesticide that the animals feeding on it can have 
higher levels in their tissue — what ultimately becomes a burger or steak — 
than plants grown for your supermarket produce department….

Not at all sure but think the beef kidney suet we buy locally is a bit
better than the stuff that goes into suet cake manufacture. As that
comes by the tanker load from slaughter houses and probably contains
other than kidney fat.
