[cayugabirds-l] bald eagle over Iradell Road

I was driving up Iradell Road about 1:45 pm today. Saw crows mobbing a large 
bird and then that bird turned back towards me - bald eagle! Pretty far from 
lake. And flying pretty low over that field, although that could have been the 
crows. The eagle flew across the road and up into a tall tree.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle carrying nesting material in Lansing

This morning (13 Jan) I was on Blackchin Blvd, a sidestreet off East Shore 
Drive above the Bolton Point water intake, when I saw an adult Bald Eagle 
flying over with what at first looked like a really long, ragged, wedge-shaped 
tail, which momentarily raised my Adrenalin level. Binoculars revealed that it 
in its feet which were against the base of its tail, it was carrying a big 
sheaf of grass, which I assume is destined to be the lining of a nest. I’ve 
never seen this before, so that was pretty neat. 

The eagle was flying more-or-less south when I saw it go overhead, and I don’t 
know how far it continued that direction, which would quickly bring it to the 
shore of Cayuga Lake still in the Town of Lansing. Does anyone know of any 
Eagle nest around there? If the eagle had turned west, maybe after continuing 
south more to overcome the south wind when crossing the lake, it would have 
arrived at the existing nest in the gorge along Maplewood Rd in the Town of 
Ulysses.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle came for tea!

We had a first today: a bald eagle landed in the tree right outside our
window! It stayed for a couple of minutes. We've seen him/her flying over
the nearby fields a couple of times, and over the Susquehanna River
recently. We're in Owego.

Viewing from extreme southeast end of Dryden lake on Jim Schug trail  
(42.4576306, -76.2691257).44 mi down from nearest parking area. Viewing almost 
due north (8 degrees) into conifers upslope maybe 350-400 m distant

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

Perched in top of beach cottonwood, so seen well from my kitchen.

Eagle has about half & half white & black feathers evenly streaked on head & 
mostly yellow beak with a dark tip.

For a couple seconds when first seen I thought “Osprey” because the dark head 
feathers seemed like a dark streak thru the eye.

Could not see tail well, but it seemed a similar mix of white & dark feathers.

It flew away & I didn’t see which way it went.

Hearing lots of Canada Geese overhead.

An adult Bald Eagle, presumably one of Dryden Lake pair, has frequently been 
perched in the dead trees of the little lake/heron colony south of the Nature 
Conservancy larch stand along east Malloryville rd (across from the von engeln 
preserve). Very picturesque.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle at Game Farm

A few years ago I was photographing an immature Bald Eagle perched in the big 
tree on Dodge Rd just south of Stevenson. It started staring at the pheasant 
pens and then took off in a power flight. I didn't see any feathers fly, and 
when it came back to the same perch a moment later, it was carrying a RAT! It 
sat there and picked it apart and ate it. Is fur better than feathers?

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

Late yesterday afternoon as I was beginning my walk around Beebe Lake, I was 
passing over the pedestrian bridge on the west end of the lake.  When I looked 
up, I saw a bird circling.  I was most surprised to see the bright white head 
of a BALD EAGLE.  Just at that moment another large bird flew overhead 
downstream.  It had a fish in its talons (headfirst).  I couldn’t tell if it 
was an osprey or an eagle, as it flew downstream into the sun and quickly 
disappeared.  Oh well! It could have been another eagle (immature).

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle @ Second Dam

Highlight of my evening jog today (through a bit of every seasons, it
seems) was an adult bald eagle flying across the second dam reservoir of
six-mile creek, my first sighting of this species there.

Meanwhile, "my" Louisiana Waterthrushes upstream from the second dam have
been reliably singing in the mornings, enough for me to get some videos:

Down in the Mulholland area, I have not heard any singing, although I have
not been in that area in the mornings. On my evening jogs, however, I've
been seeing one foraging silently and consistently in the same area several
days in a row, and today I may have seen two, including one possibly
checking a nesting site. I wonder if they've already paired up and stopped
singing?

with one question on that:  Would the toxic algae blooms that appear to be 
happening in the Lake every summer pose a risk to young (or even not so young)  
fish-eating birds of prey?

I too saw one of these eagles at Dryden lake on April 5, it came in late and 
settled (for the night perhaps), on the manmade wooden perch in the water. It 
might have been the "she".

passed by again 20 minutes after first seeing him--taking in the evening view 
of the lake, where the fish were, in fact, jumping.   And where quite a few 
common mergansers were enjoying the evening quiet too (may not have been aware 
who was watching them).

I had a mature bald eagle fly over our yard on Turkey hill about an hour ago 
heading northwest, in the general direction of the compost piles on Stevenson.  
There has been a flock of turkeys along Ellis hollow creek road not far from 
Turkey hill road 2 out of the last 3 mornings.

elsewhere, that inevitably means an eagle will be sweeping through

Canada geese, honking wildly, flew from a few 100 feet of shore length, low out 
over the water, and landed in the middle of Cayuga lake.
An Amer. Crow was calling wildly too.

Soon I saw the reason: a mature Bald Eagle swooped by over the shoreline from 
north to south!

 Some more information if you are interested - this article appeared in Life  
in the Finger Lakes magazine and talks about that was believed to be the last 
known pair of Bald Eagles (before the recovery program) in New York in 1965. It 
was discovered by Tom Rauber, a Rochester Telephone linesman, and amateur 
naturalist. Tom would later work with the DEC, and DEC wildlife technician Mike 
Allen of the Endangered Species Unit, on the bald eagle recovery program. Tom 
and Mike have both passed away but their work is one of the reasons we are able 
to see so many of these magnificent birds today.

interest.  I believe she mentioned there are about 80 nests known in Region 8, 
which I believe includes 11 counties.  Tompkins County is in Region 7, so 
perhaps there is a person with similar responsibilities in Region 7.

 

I remember visiting the eagle hacking site in the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge in 
in WNY in the 1970s when the program was underway.

According to Wikipedia, the Bald Eagle Protection Act was first passed in 1940, 
Golden Eagles were added in 1962, and it was amended many times including a

About local Bald Eagles, I saw a pair of adults perched together in a tree at 
Dryden Lake in January. I bet they have been or are or will be nesting there. 

 

The nest by the mouth of Paine’s Creek at the south end of Aurora is very 
accessible. It is not in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, nor in the southern 
Cayuga Lake Basin. 

 

In the last few days I have seen as many as 5 Bald Eagles (1 adult and 4 
different immatures) on or over the ice shelf at the south end of Cayuga Lake. 

 

As someone who was growing up when Bald Eagles were near their population low 
point, I am thrilled every time I see one. It is wonderful to live in a place 
and time where we can personally experience the results of that recovery and 
know that efforts in our area were a part of the story. (Peregrine Falcons &

comprehensive restoration program in the country. In1976 a site was chosen at 
Tschache Pool in the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge for the first hacking

That program was discontinued in 1989 when the goal of ten nesting pairs was 
reached. The large Bald Eagle statue along the wildlife drive was recently 
installed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the start of that program.



Today the MNWR boasts ten active nests with several more in the North Montezuma 
Wetlands Complex. During a recent winter raptor survey LaRue St. Clair spotted 
59 birds in one morning. In recent days the agglomeration of nearly 50 roosting 
Bald Eagles at the east end of Onondaga Lake has drawn national attention. See

According to Wikipedia, the Bald Eagle Protection Act was first passed in 1940, 
Golden Eagles were added in 1962, and it was amended many times including a

About local Bald Eagles, I saw a pair of adults perched together in a tree at 
Dryden Lake in January. I bet they have been or are or will be nesting there.

The nest by the mouth of Paine’s Creek at the south end of Aurora is very 
accessible. It is not in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, nor in the southern 
Cayuga Lake Basin.

In the last few days I have seen as many as 5 Bald Eagles (1 adult and 4 
different immatures) on or over the ice shelf at the south end of Cayuga Lake.

As someone who was growing up when Bald Eagles were near their population low 
point, I am thrilled every time I see one. It is wonderful to live in a place 
and time where we can personally experience the results of that recovery and

59 birds in one morning. In recent days the agglomeration of nearly 50 roosting 
Bald Eagles at the east end of Onondaga Lake has drawn national attention. See

For us at the south end of Cayuga Lake, there has been an active nest at

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle in Newfield

My second incidental Bald Eagle sighting this spring!  This one (another adult) 
flew over Route 13 at the top of the hill in Newfield (between the old gas 
station and the turnoff into the Village), headed uphill (west) from the valley 
below (east of) the road.  S/he was carrying something bloody in her/his talons 
and was being chased by a couple of crows.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle - Interlaken

I know of two Bald Eagle nests in the Interlaken area.  Both are on private 
property.  There could be more.  

For the last several years, there has been an active nest on Powell Rd, across 
the road from our house.  It's in the woods at the back of a large field.  It's 
not very visible this time of the year when no leaves are on the trees, and 
essentially not viewable from the road during the summer.  One and possibly two 
young fledged from that nest last year.

We've seen reduced activity at that nest and in the general area this year 
leading up to breeding season.  About a month ago, we noticed a large nest on 
the south side of Hickok Rd. and later confirmed seeing adults at that nest.  
The owners of that property have been seeing the eagles regularly coming from 
and going to the nest.  It appears that nest is the active one this year.  
Though we have occasionally seen adult eagles along Powell Rd, we haven't seen 
activity at the nest.  

The two nest locations are probably less than 1 mile apart, as the eagle flies.

Is this the same pair starting a new nest?  Did one of the original pair die 
and the remaining one got a new mate and they started a new nest?  It would be 
interesting to know or at least hear others' opinions.

This morning I was driving on Game Farm and saw a large bird flying over the 
pheasant pens that turned and flew up into the trees of McGowan Woods on the 
opposite side of the road. Slowed down and searched the upper branches until we 
spotted an adult Bald Eagle who was keeping an eye on all the activity. Had to 
take off, so we don't know how long it stayed in the area. Colleen Richards

We frequently have bald eagles out here between 38 and Ed Hill Road on Hile 
School Rd.  I haven’t been home enough to note whether they are settling down 
in the woods next door as they did last year and year before.  During 2015 we 
had at least 3…2 adults or near adults and a juvenile.  But one or more 
regularly come overhead, sometimes soar toward the great blue heron rookery off 
Red Mill Rd, or out toward Fall Creek Rd near Ed HIll intersection.  (Notably, 
that rookery was totally gone this past summer, although I cannot figure out 
how all the nests were suddenly gone.  I suspect “management”, but no one 
around here has been able to tell me anything.)

There are a lot of “gut piles” around now, from deer dressing, so I am sure the 
pickings have been reasonably good for scavengers.

I was driving over the Etna Mills bridge crossing Fall Creek, there was an 
adult eagle sitting in a large tree directly overlooking the stream bed.

In Alaska I saw Bald Eagles swimming as described, often a few strokes
before breaking free of the water. Sometimes with fish and sometimes empty
taloned.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle on nest, Ulysses

The Bald Eagle nest off NYS-89 along the west shore of Cayuga Lake in the Town 
of Ulysses is technically possible to see, but it’s obscured by vegetation. The 
most satisfying time to watch is when the young are big and standing up or even 
climbing around. Verifying an incubating or brooding adult lying down in the 
nest is difficult, but I claim success. 

On Sunday I walked north from East Shore Park. I was scoping (without luck) for 
Red-throated Loon or scoters. Eventually I found a rumored "cove with many 
birds" immediately south of Portland Point where there were several groups of 
Red-breasted Mergansers courting. The warm south winds caused too much heat 
shimmer for lake scanning on my return hike. However, I was able to scope 
across the lake, look up into the gorge where the eagles reside, pick out their 
nest tree and see the nest clearly above the bough which blocks view from the 
nearby road. There was a white dot the right size & shape to be an adult Bald 
Eagle’s head on top of the south side of the nest. I thought it changed or 
moved, but I could not pick out details even at 60x. Maybe if optical 
conditions were even better… 

The viewshed from that nest must be grand, including the gorge and waterfalls 
below, a panarama of the lake, and cliffs split by several waterfalls on the 
far shore.

Yesterday after dropping off a fare on Maplewood Rd I took a closer look at the 
nest. I positioned the taxi along a guardrail, set up my scope and window 
mount, and aimed it with the window raised half way. Through separate small 
gaps in tree branches and nest sticks I saw a patch of white that could be head 
plumage, a bit of yellow-orange that was probably the bill, and, staring 
conclusively back at me, a pale yellow eye. Soon they rearranged and the eye 
and bill disappeared. That’s fine, I don’t need to bother it again for a month 
or two.

[cayugabirds-l] BALD EAGLE SURVEY---David Marsh, Canandaigua

The record for Bald Eagles (BAEA) sighted at the Mid Winter Bald Eagle Survey 
was smashed on Friday, January 8.. Twenty-nine surveyors covered 14 assigned 
routes to sight 77 BAEA,  a new survey record for the Greater Montezuma 
Wetlands. Last year 43 BAEA were reported at Montezuma in this annual 
nationwide survey. The detail results by route will be reported to the U. S. 
Army Corps of Engineers, who coordinate this annual national survey.

The day was perfect for surveying, and it was quite beautiful as well with lots 
of sunshine, light breezes, excellent visibility, and good travel conditions. 
Unlike the Winter Raptor Surveys, where surveyors are assigned a fixed survey 
spot, surveyors for the BAEA survey  are assigned a route to travel, either in 
vehicles, or on foot. The total survey area covered is larger than for the 
raptor surveys, running from the north end of Cayuga Lake to the Lake Ontario 
shore.

The #1 hot  site today was Tschache Pool, which had been drained recently, 
where 40 BAEA were counted, most collected in trees at the north end. An 
amazing spectacle. The Main Pool area was the #2 spot, with 14 BAEA. Although 
we were not counting them, a number of Rough-legged Hawks (RLHA) were also 
reported, a good sign that we may see more of them in our forthcoming raptor 
surveys. The sizable Sandhill Crane (SACR) “gang” that has been hanging around, 
was also spotted, indicating they must be enjoying our mild winter.

This annual daytime event is always a lot of fun, providing an opportunity for 
participants to socialize and watch the scoreboard to see how the count comes 
in. Of course there is food, a potluck provided by the volunteers. My gratitude 
to everyone who provided the food, and to all who helped with the survey. Your 
time is precious, and it is appreciated.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle?

7:50am.  Perched prominently over the inlet in the west end of Ithaca, near
the top of a tall tree approximately behind Kelly's Dock-Side.
Not-yet-mature.  Easily visible from 89 and the Octopus when crossing the
inlet. A question mark b/c it was from a moving vehicle, no bins.

Perched in a tree overlooking the river watching geese. If you are on the 
bridge near post office look North. 

Corner of Etna Rd  Lower Creek Rd. 

If it would only fly a little way down the river it would be a yard bird for 
me.

Can anyone verify for me?  It was flying near hickeys music and heading south 
toward inlet about 4:15. White belly and underside of wings with golden tail 
feathers (not red).

[cayugabirds-l] bald eagle adult? and juv-Freeville

Over field SE of my house, 147 Hile School Road, right over wood lot at Ed Hill 
and Hile School.  1 is a juvenile, the other doesn't look fully adult (or is 
molting).  Juve following the more adult one, finally joining it in a large 
dead tree overlooking the field.

Two ravens, regulars and here since early morning, resumed loud kwonking while 
the eagles were in flight.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle nest in Aurora

Hi all,
Everyone may already know about this , but I see there is a Bald Eagle nest at 
the intersection of Poplar Ridge Rd. and Rt-90 in Aurora. It's a tree in the 
near side of the yard for  the house on the point and visible from the road. 
The leaves can make it a little hard to see. It helps when the adults perch 
next to it.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle and other photos up / Derby Hill Tues.

Strong south winds brought a few raptors past Derby Hill today, mostly 
Red-tails and Bald Eagles.  I've put up a bunch of photos on Flickr, including 
the eagles, Kingfisher flying with a fish, etc.  Many new photos of birds in 
flight are now sorted by taxonomic group.


There is also a photo of an interesting bluebird, possibly Mountain Bluebird, 
that passed with a flock of E. Bluebirds in May.

About 7:25 am, a mature bald eagle, flying low, direction nw, crossed Rt 90 at 
the Aurora south village limit.   Glorious sight for a morning commute.  In 
past years, an eagle has patrolled the east shore of the lake near Aurora, but 
usually later in the day.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

Around 6:30 tonight, watching baseball practice at Cass park in a field
adjacent to the Cayuga Inlet, a single adult Bald Eagle flew fairly low (50
feet or so) over the Inlet from south to north. Last seen heading toward
the lake. It's white head and yellow beak clearly visible even without
binoculars. I expected it to turn into something else like a t.v. or an
osprey when i first noticed it, but it was unmistakeable at close range.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle in Candor

[Mo Barger Rooster Hill Farm]

Had an interesting ride in to work today. Drove by a cornfield that
was filled with crows. Then I realized a mature Bald Eagle was on the
ground with them. I turned around thinking I could grab a good picture
but spooked them all. The eagle crossed the road and perched in a
large tree that overlooks a pheasant farm.

Within a half mile I spotted a Cooper's Hawk catching the morning sun
from top of a tree and then 2 puffed up Red Tails sharing another
tree.

It was interesting to see the eagle up in the hills where I live
though. There is no large creek to speak of. I know there have been
some in the past who have remained around Catatonk Creek around the
American Legion in Candor but have never seen one in a field. Since I
raise poultry I am hoping he doesn't stick around too long. o_O

When real time tracking of eagles by satellite transmitter demonstrated the
tremendous distances they often travel in 24 hours (crossing multiple state 
lines),
I would have thought that any population survey should be accomplished on a 
single
day nationwide. A fourteen or even a two day period would produce very 
inaccurate
results.

 On Wednesday morning (10:00-10:50 AM), Tilden and I saw four BALD EAGLES at
 the south end of Cayuga Lake.  We had long scope views of a couple of these
 eagles at rest.  Better still, we witnessed a spectacular show from these
 birds in the air all over Stewart Park and the Newman Golf Course.  One
 circled over the ducks on the lake.  One passed right overhead, holding a
 small fish in talons balled and rolled back like piano casters.  And for
 several stirring minutes, all four rose together over Fall Creek and the
 Stewart Park woods, mostly arranged two by two, alternating between seeming
 choreographed synchrony and bursts of aggression and tumbling aerobatic
 evasion.  At one point the eagles - which included one adult, two third-year
 birds, and one dark first-year or second-year bird - ranged far to the south
 almost out of view, but then they returned for a while.  We did not see them
 during the final 15 minutes of our visit, as we walked back from the golf
 course to Stewart Park.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

Today afternoon while I was seeing some awesome insects like Green Darners and 
Black Saddlebags and a Ixodontia wasp carrying long grass blades (7 to 8 inches 
long) to some location under my office window, I watched an adult Bald Eagle 
circle around in front of my office window for a few minutes before heading off 
towards Lab of O I presume!



Finally, they are here. The Fireflies!  About 30 + flying in the front and back 
yard. Till yesterday I had not seen them, so I was wondering if changes in the 
plant compositions changed the habitat for them. But no, I think they just were 
late in emerging this year. I went out to switch on moth lights, and was glad 
to observe fourth of July fireworks in the yard!



I know Karen Edelstein posted seeing them a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone 
else seen them earlier this year?

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle sighting

This morning at 6:30 we spotted a bald eagle flying over the 30-foot dam 
reservoir on Six Mile Creek. It was being harrassed by a smaller bird. This is 
our first eagle sighting at Six Mile. What a treat!

Juvenile Bald Eagle circling in a generally northward direction at 10:05
a.m.this morning. As s/he moved farther north s/he was harassed by a lone
gull; the gull didn't seem serious and the eagle ignored the far-misses.

A neighbor reports having seen an adult Bald Eagle just north of Blue Heron
Point in the area of the Whitlock Preserve last week.

[cayugabirds-l] bald eagle on Dryden Lake

First canoeing of the season on Dryden Lake yesterday afternoon (sorry for late 
post - sore muscles!). Flushed an adult bald eagle from the NE edge of the lake 
which flew directly across and perched in trees on the west edge. When we 
arrived opposite the main park pavilion some kayaks again flushed the bird who 
flew very low back over the water and landed very close to the area where it 
was originally spotted. 
Wondering now if it is local...?

across above me at some 75 feet elevation. The very brief glimpse I had 
convinced me it was an adult bald eagle.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle nest in Corning

Hi Everyone,

Since I first reported the eagles on the nest on February 13, I have checked 
the nest four times and each time the one adult was holding tight on the nest. 
Today, the second adult was perched  nearby.  Hope to be able to report 
increased activity in a week or so as an indication they are feeding young.  
could somebody share with me what the normal incubation time is for eagles?

I’ve noticed that the crows seem to keep to the other side of the river.  
Probably not a coincidence.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

Hi all,

As I was driving up 79 towards my home a few minutes ago, at the junction of 
366, I saw a large bird heading towards me. As it came closer, I could clearly 
see it was an adult BALD EAGLE. It seemed to be coming from Six Mile Creek 
reservoir.



In my driveway, I found a Tufted Titmouse scolding angrily to something in a 
dead maple branch. A chickadee joined it shortly. I personally could not see 
anything, but I think there is big enough hole for small owl to be hiding in 
that.



Lastly, as I  picked up my grocery bag and headed up the house, I could hear a 
faint song and I could say it was a warbler, but could not think from where the 
sound might be coming. Then I realized that in my jacket pocket, I had my PCM 
10 and somehow the playback button got pressed and I was hearing a Prothonotary 
warbler (of Armitage road) singing! But it was pleasant to hear that, made me 
smile at the thought of up coming spring!

BALD EAGLE, adult, soaring back and forth, north to south, over Lansing Station 
Rd., Lansing, and edge of lake, 3 PM.
Also, same time, flock of about 30 CEDAR WAXWINGS perched in tree, over road; 
woods there have many grape vines.

We were without electric power and cable ( Internet) after then, so couldn't 
post it till now.

This morning was my first chance to follow up on Rick's report, so I followed his tracks and biked to Maplewood Rd off NYS-89. For a couple hours I watched with a scope through trees. The two young BALD EAGLES are full size and well feathered, and they have climbed out of the nest into the crown of the nest tree. They were alert but fairly inactive, occasionally stretching or preening a bit. They are not subject to full sun all day, but their mouths were open against today's heat, and they occasionally drooped their wings a bit. I don't know whether this posture is also for heat regulation, or because their muscles are not well-developed. They were not exercising their wings, but occasionally used them for balance when walking on the branches. As I pondered their situation it occurred to me that not only are the young dependent on the fish brought by the parents for food but also for their entire fluid intake. No adults came while I observed, but I hope they bring juicy fish frequently on these hot days. While there I met several neighbors, and I learned that the nest seems to have been started last year, when 2 young were also raised. It is not very easy to see the nest from the public road, and I think it would be difficult from a car due to the angles and obstructions. Neighbors are excited this nest, but they are justifiably against extra traffic on this narrow road with its blind curves. If you would like to see this nest and young, who may be leaving soon, I recommend biking, as Rick and I did, enabling one to pull off the road, or walking along the road, as the neighbors do, to the best viewing site. While biking on Maplewood Road in the Town of Ulysses (the road off NYS-89 near Glenwood Pines Restaurant and the Ithaca Yacht Club) someone pointed out to him a BALD EAGLE nest with 2 large nestlings at the top of a pine tree. This is very cool that we have Bald Eagles nesting in Tompkins County! I had seen adults going in that direction from Stewart Park last year, so this may not be the first year for this nest.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle / R-s Hawk

Yesterday while walking along Boiceville Road in Brooktondale I was treated to 
an excellent view of a fairly low-flying RED-SHOULDERED HAWK circling over the 
fields as it slowly made its way north. My first of the year for this species.

Also yesterday, at the Lindsay Parsons Biodiversity Preserve in West Danby, an 
adult BALD EAGLE flew over, again slowly and circling higher and higher until 
it was a dot in the sky. This bird was also headed north.

the local red-tailed hawk pair, I was surprised to see an immature BALD
EAGLE lifting off from my neighbor's back yard.  It followed Boiceville
Creek to the northwest, heading for Cayuga Lake.  I suppose this bird took
advantage of favorable winds yesterday to migrate this far from the
Susquehanna R.

Hi all,

Yesterday around this time, my colleague and I watched an adult Bald Eagle come 
flying straight along Fall Creek from east and headed towards lake. I forgot to 
post yesterday.
I also saw two fledged Flickers along the road behind the USDA building near 
Mundy Wildflower garden.
As for bird food, I have been seeing many Wandering and Spot-winged Gliders 
which according to recent  NYSDD data base (2010) were not recorded from 
Tompkins county, although I have been seeing them for several years including 
survey years! There were also five Meadow Fritillaries, I think they were all 
males as they were checking out any passing butterflies hoping them to be 
females, I think because there were host plants on the ground nearby and were 
expecting a female to show up. One Wandering glider was checking out each and 
every insect to see if it was a female he desired to find at the same spot.

[cayugabirds-l] BALD EAGLE @ Treman Marina, Ithaca

Hi All, this is my first time posting to this illustrious list...

Yesterday late morning a mature BALD EAGLE was spotted flying over the water 
near the light houses on the southern end of Cayuga Lake. It was harassed by 
some gulls then it flew toward the woods that are between the marina and Rt. 89 
and haunted the edge of the field for a while. This is the first time I've seen 
a BALD EAGLE in the vicinity of downtown, so I thought it may be of interest to 
folk who can't make it out to Montezuma.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle/ Kathy Strickland

[John and Fritzie Blizzard]

Kathy Strickland called me at 2:25 p.m. from Esty Hill (Rte. 34 north of 
Stewart Park) to report that she had just seen an adult BALD EAGLE cruising 
along the east shore of the lake. Probably is the same one Ken R. reported at 
1:46 p.m.. She called a bit later from Ladoga to say she saw it there.

Here at home I took a picture from my kitchen window of a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW 
plucking seeds from a dandelion head about 7' from the house. Strange how 
huggable they look! Of course, the Kat would like to snuggle that adorable 
little warm body inside his own!!!

Fritzie Blizzard  Hey, for those who don't know ... I'm a 77 yr. 
old great, grand-mother . Fritzie is sometimes the nickname for Fredericka 
 Fritz is for Fred/Frederick. My actual name is Carolyn but I've been Fritzie 
since I was 6 yrs. old  reason, unknown! Maybe because some Germans say the 
free translation of Fritz means full of life or mischievous which I was!

An adult Bald Eagle just flew south over my office window!
A pair of Red-tails seem to be in the vicinity too and seem to be going to 
Vet tower often. may be they are thinking of making it a home!
