[cayugabirds-l] Immature Bald Eagle in Trumansburg (Schuyler County)
Much to my surprise, an immature Bald Eagle just flew toward my home on Rumsey Road, Trumansburg, from the east and flew very low over the field across the road for several minutes. An adult Red-tailed Hawk harassed the eagle until the eagle landed on the ground. The hawk then perched in a nearby tree to keep an eye on the situation. There's a slight dip in the field, which is where the eagle landed, so I can no longer see it. The light from the setting sun was perfect for seeing field marks, and I could easily see the enormous bill and that the talons were lowered in flight. There may be an animal carcass in the field that the hawk and eagle both want. What a thrilling way to end a beautiful November day. [cayugabirds-l] immature bald eagle found locally
A gentleman called me late Thursday afternoon saying he had found a very large bird along the east shore of Cayuga Lake while out boating. His description certainly sounded like an immature bald eagle so we met at the marina and went by boat about a mile up the shoreline. Sure enough there was a massive bird lying prone on the rocks right on the edge of the water by the railroad tracks and beneath a fairly high cliff. It tried to scramble away but was very weak and thin (although fairly alert and bright-eyed).It never attempted to fly but its wings spread open when it was picked up and the wingspan was impressive. We delivered it to the Cornell wildlife clinic and have subsequently learned that it was a male with a leg fracture now on the mend. It's tail is speckled white but little white otherwise. It appears to be a male (overall size and weight, 3.8 kg, testicles, etc.). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] immature bald eagle
Tuesday, June 29 I watched from my yard on Wyers Point Road, an immature Bald Eagle. It flew back and forth along the shoreline of Cayuga Lake. It wanted to land but had to circle around and around as a crow and several smaller birds were chasing it. It did succeed and I did not see it again, through the trees. I believe it was after a dead fish as one was seen floating earlier. Last year there was a Bald Eagle that made a habit of sitting on a dead tree branch, near here and along the lakeshore. He was seen catching fish from the lake. To have Eagles along here has been only for the past several years, that I know of. I think they are migrating up from Montezuma Wildlife Refuge at the end of the lake.
