[cayugabirds-l] Tundra swans at Jennings Pond

While not a rarity by any means (though a first for this hotspot in eBird), 
there are 4 tundra swans resting on the ice and paddling about Jennings Pond 
this morning. They are easy to see and photograph. So feel free if you are in 
Danby and would like to have nice views of swans.  

There are 3 tundra swans to the  south of the gravel  at the swimming area.  
It's very  easy to get great looks

Thanks Kevin.  I know most folks are respectful and that's very much
appreciated.  It seems a lot of folks discovered the road when the pandemic
started, while out looking for places to walk and run.  So there has been
quite an influx of new people going through.  I expect most don't know that
Ladoga Park Road is a private road.  It has been a little unnerving for the
residents.  Thank you for your reassurance and continued respect.  :)

Such a sweet remembrance of your uncle. Thanks for sharing.

I have birded that spot for many years, and I have never gone beyond the road’s 
end, nor seen anyone do anything except scope the view from the public road. I 
know it happens, but most of the birding community is respectful of property 
rights.

And the swans this weekend were wonderful. (I counted 13.) I love hearing them 
talk amongst themselves. Their voices are so layered and resonant.

It warmed my heart to hear of the swans, thank you.  When my uncle was dying, 
he asked to come home to Ladoga Park from Florida.  He wanted to see his 
beloved lake again and hoped to see some swans too.  It was February over a

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans

I was standing on Tupper Road at about 8:50 this morning with a couple of 
walking companions whom I’d just met. Visibility was reduced by the falling 
snow to just a few hundred yards. We heard but could not see a flock of Tundra 
Swans passing south along the Cayuga Inlet Valley to our east.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans for Ithaca Count Week

At Stewart Park this morning Jay McGowan refound the ROSS'S GOOSE, pointed it 
out to me, and sent out a text alert that it was sleeping on the ice among 
CANADA GEESE. Moments later, a volley of gunfire at Cornell's Merritt Family 
Boating Center roused all the geese to standing attention. The Ross's Goose 
began walking west on the ice. It's pink legs and feet were surprisingly large 
for such a dainty bird. While I changed my vantage, it snuck into the water, 
and I next saw it swimming west along the ice edge among MALLARDS. I knew they 
were supposed to be the same size, but still it was a bit mind-bending to see. 
I have to throw out my mental categorization that geese are bigger than ducks. 
Next the Ross's Goose changed direction, and I was surprised to see it sidle up 
next to a single "BLUE" SNOW GOOSE, which wasn't much larger. No, it wasn't a 
dark Ross's; it had a bigger bill and typical Blue Goose plumage. I spent 
longer than I intended at the park. During distractions and delays around 8am I 
heard TUNDRA SWANS. A flock of 17 of the giant all-white birds flew south 
toward me well above tree level, then veered west when they reached land as if 
checking out the emptied and frozen swan pond. Then they circled back overhead 
and headed north again. I felt a gift was bestowed upon me.  Another bonus was 
a/the adult Peregrine perched in a tree within Stewart Park.

So, yes, we now have another Count Week species, Tundra Swan, in addition to 
the Canvasback, Greater Scaup, Black Scoter, and Glaucous Gull which were 
present on 29 December.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans at Taughannock Park

Friday around noon I saw and heard five TUNDRA SWANS flying north along the
shore of Cayuga Lake. I saw them from Taughannock Park, on the west shore
of the lake. I did not see where they landed. There were also quite a few
REDHEAD and COMMON MERGANSER still present.

Currently 103 Tundra Swans in the pond to the west of Kahler Road at the Speer 
Memorial Park. They are in the back pond behind Lowe Pond.  Also one Mute Swan

There was obviously a big flight of TUNDRA SWANS last night and today. I saw a 
total of 15 TUNDRA SWANS migrating today in smaller groups than the geese. In 
addition, one birder found at least 36 TUNDRA SWANS in one part of Broome 
County which is
unprecedented for down here.

This evening, at dusk, I saw six tundra swans, one clearly a first year bird, 
just off the east shore of Cayuga Lake at (little) Gully Road.  After having 
seen the trumpeters closely so recently in Union Springs, these were obviously 
tundras.

Associated ducks, but it was getting too dark for me to see them clearly.

A pair of tundra swans on the mill pond in Union Springs this morning about 
10:45.  Both had yellow tags on the wings; I could read only one:  A21.
Quite a few widgeons, a bufflehead, lots of Canadas.

Around 2:30 at East Hill Plaza I could hear flyover Tundras but couldn't see 
them in the clouds. If they have been moving all this time that's quite a good 
number.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans

Driving back from Rochester, after visiting Pine Grosbeaks Friday, I was able 
to scan a little at dusk from Cayuga Lake SP. The Tundra Swans are starting to 
build in numbers with over 100 just south of the park. I watched a feeding line 
made up of 60 Red-breasted Mergansers and 50 Bonaparte's Gulls. I didn't see 
any rarer Gulls mixed in unfortunately. 
Many more waterfowl were too distant to ID, in the fading light,but one flyby 
flock looked like it could be Black Scoters.

[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swans at Stewart Park

In addition to the large numbers of waterfowl at Stewart Park already reported 
by Laura and Ton, there were 6 TUNDRA SWANS near the east end of the park late 
this afternoon. 500-600 gulls were loafing on the water offshore, but I 
couldn't find anything other than the usual 3 species.

Treman park shore, SW corner, where the ice has now melted.  Many of them are

There were four Tundra Swans at the edge of the ice, SW corner of Cayuga Lake, 
late in the afternoon.  The usual number lately has been three.  Didn't have a 
chance to count other waterfowl, but there were approximately 20 Great 
Black-backed Gulls and several hundred Canada Geese, also some Redheads but I 
didn't have a change to do a complete survey.

This morning on my drive to work I observed two immature Tundra Swans on a
small wetland just south of Ithaca, at the T-intersection of Cox Road and
Rte. 13 in Newfield.  This seemed like an early sighting for Tundra Swans,
and a quick check in eBird showed only a handful of October sightings in
NY.  The majority of reports are from the last week of October, and there
are no October reports from Tompkins county.

That's funny. I also saw a few Tundra swans on the south end of Sodus Bay,
just north of Ridge Road. Mute swans are fairly common on East bay, but
these are the first Tundra swans I have seen in my admittedly short birding
life.

Hi all,

Apologies for not elaborating on my earlier Tundra Swan posting:  this is a
very early report for Tundra Swans and I rushed to get it out on the list
should someone else make their way to find them.

In my traditional bout of second-guessing, and given the ID challenges
between the swans, my too-limited experience with this group, and in this
case my less-than-desirable position on the shoulder of the road (which
didn't allow for the amount of study I would have liked), I need to step
back to what I should have written originally: it was my impression is that
these were immature Tundra Swans, but I really shouldn't have ruled out
Trumpeter or Mute.

I watched the birds for a few minutes, during which they moved around the
pond quite a bit, periodically disappearing behind the vegetation lining the
pond.  During this time I noted their plumage appeared brownish-white and
their bills were not black but pinkish, appearing brighter than the dusky
color I associate with an immature Mute Swan.  Their regal-like posture --
holding their head high on straight necks - also made me think
Tundra/Trumpeter.

The profile and shape of the head and bill seemed more akin to Tundra than
Trumpeter, but I realize this is a very difficult separation, one that I
shouldn't make on these birds.  There were no other birds on or near the
pond, in fact, I've never noticed birds down there, so I wasn't able to make
any meaningful size comparison.

I hope someone is able to re-find the birds and provide a more substantive
identification, regardless which species they are it's an interesting
sighting.  I'll be on the lookout on my way home this evening.  (Note to
self: travel somewhere to watch swans more often.)
