...and this morning I got my answer: one Louisiana Waterthrush is singing down
in the flood-scoured gorge.

[cayugabirds-l] Beech Hill Brook

2016-04-20 Thread Geo Kloppel
Nice chorus of Hermit Thrushes this morning along Beech Hill Brook in the L-P
Preserve. Ruby-crowned Kinglets singing in all directions. Fox Sparrows are at
or perhaps past their peak now. One singing Winter Wren. No Louisiana
Waterthrushes yet. That's got me wondering: like many other streams in the
south of Newfield and Danby, the brook received a tremendous scouring last year
during the big flash flood. The bedrock sections of the stream bed are little
changed, but portions over loose aggregate were treated to major rearrangement.
Great quantities of rocks and boulders, some weighing more than 1,000 pounds,
were transported far downstream, all during a few hours in mid-June. LA
Waterthrush habitat took a severe scrubbing, and it seems likely that nests in
the banks could have been destroyed. So, will the Waterthrushes come back this
year? Can't wait to find out!
