2020-05-08 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
I wanted to update everyone that the BLUE GROSBREAK has shown up at someone’s
feeder in Waterloo “a stone’s throw” from the landfill, her words. This was
posted in the Upstate NY Bird Watchers group on FB around 8am today.

Thanks for the information, Alyssa! And please give my thanks to Daniel Popp,
his wife, and the Seneca Landfill managers for sharing their finding with you,
and letting you in to take photos. I love seeing Blue Grosbeaks, and I have
seen them several times farther south where they usually live, so I don’t feel
a personal need to go see this individual bird, especially when I have the
vivid record of the photos and accounts you and they provided.

Cardinals are known to attack their “rival” reflections in mirrors or windows.
Blue Grosbeaks are in the same family. I’m less familiar with Blue Grosbeak
behavior, but this individual certainly shares the trait.

Here’s a link to the First Records list:

http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-records

Blue Grosbeak is species #219 this year on the Chronological version.

On the Taxonomic version, Blue Grosbeak is near the bottom on line #472 in the
last family, Cardinalidae, along with more common birds, such as Northern
Cardinal, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, and Scarlet Tanager, plus
uncommon species such as Dickcissel.

The “notes” column on the left of the Taxonomic list gives the years in which
very rare birds have been found in the Cayuga Lake Basin. In the case of Blue
Grosbeak, I’m only aware of records in 2012, 2013, and now 2020. There are also
names of counties in the “notes” column for species which have been found in
those nearby counties but have not yet been found in the Cayuga Lake Basin.

Hi Alyssa,
How exciting! Such a beautiful and, for this region, rare, life bird, plus a
bit of an adventure to go there, and striking (!) behavior. Great photos, too!

I keep a list on the Cayuga Bird Club website of first annual records of
species found in the Cayuga Lake Basin, which includes Seneca Meadows. Of
course this is the first report of a Blue Grosbeak in 2020. I like to credit
the name(s) of the person(s) who found the bird. Did you get Dan’s last name?
Thanks!

Congratulations!
On May 8th, 2013 we had a Blue Grosbeak visit a feeder in Danby, south of
Ithaca, so the timing is perfect. 10 minutes and then gone. A lifetime
highlight.
Maybe we will see one here in Albuquerque!

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak is present at the Blue Grass lanw

2013-10-18 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

Today evening after work, I decided to walk to Blue Grass lane. Luckily for me
as I walking a bird made some noise in the NE corner of southern corn field,
may be about 50 feet from the corner. So stopped and looked for the bird but
did not see. I must confess that then I decided to spish once. There it popped
up and sat briefly on the corn where I could get a binocular view of its beak
and face and for a fraction of a second whole body before it dove into the corn
again. I spent some more time in the vicinity. I heard it call twice giving
calls in about twenty minutes I was there. I reviewed the calls with Peterson's
Guide on the cell phone app and it sounded like what is described as the 'pit'
calls.

Along the marsh of the (ex) Bull Pasture pond, I heard and saw several
Red-winged Blackbirds doing my property, somewhere else two White-throated
Sparrows were singing in duet pure sweet Canada Canada. Sunset was awesome!
If felt like pleasant spring evening except sun was setting earlier!

Meena

PS: Dave Weber and friend - Sorry guys, I could not call you as I did not have
your phone numbers and for some reasons, I had deleted the RBA messages so I
did not have the number to post, hence I emailed. I saw the bird just barely
after 6 or 7 minutes of my meeting you.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak continues in NE Ithaca

2013-10-14 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
The female BLUE GROSBEAK continues on gravel road section of Bluegrass Lane,
south of Hanshaw, well east of Warren Rd.

I saw the bird today, 14 Oct 2013, at 12:58 pm, and had it in view about 6
minutes. It was in the same spot where it was originally found: in the very SW
corner of the corn east of the road, just north of the chain-link fence.

I watched it forage in the corn along the edge for several minutes. It once
flew up and perched high on top of a corn stalk, but spent most of the time
about chest height in the leaves of corn. It eventually flew off to the SW
into the corn patch just west of the road, just north of the last barn. It was
calling consistently the whole time (which is how I found it).

I had walked around those areas for a while before I found it. I suspect the
best strategy would be to sit at the NW corner of the fence and watch that
corner of corn. The bird seems to be coming back there, so sitting and waiting
might be best. Plenty of sparrows to keep your attention while you wait (Song,
Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned, House).

Hi all,

I am curious as to note that the bird has been calling whole day while
yesterday and day before it was quiet. Does weather has to do anything with it?
Any explanations anybody has to offer?

Yesterday when I was there was a fair bit activity in the south east corner of
the corn opposite to fence. But I never saw the bird, only movements.

field on the west side of the north leg of Bluegrass Lane.) It was moving
west along the hedgerow but the habitat gets more forested near the SW
corner of the field, so it may have gone into the brushy area or doubled
back into the corn. We have continued to look for it without success. It
did not call and was not responsive to pishing.

RE: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Bluegrass Lane

2013-10-13 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

I thought it was a walkable distance to go looking for Blue Grosbeak, so I did
the walk from Golf Course side via Forest Home Walkway. Unfortunately, I
missed the first turn, so I had to go around the woods. But that was good I got
to see lots of birds. There were three WINTER WRENS pottering around and I got
good looks at each of them. Like last time I mentioned I seem to be lucky with
Winter Wrens this year! There were lots of WHITE-TROATED SPARROWS all along the
hedgerow at the edge of the woods. I saw a few of them eating fruits of
Buckthorn and a small shrub, which looks like a Vaccinum sp, but had red pointy
fruits, I need to identify this plant. Several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, one
group was at Golf Course, next two were in the Bluegrass lane woods. Also there
was a BROWN CREEPER along with a couple of WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. A
NORTHEN FLICKER flick flicked for quite sometime. Quite a few RUBY CROWNED
KINGLETS also were present.

Finally, there were quite a few sparrows most of them dove into corn when
disturbed, but one sparrow came out of the corn and sat on a bare branch in the
hedgerow and gave me a good view! This was a FILED SPARROW.

I spent about 20 minutes looking for the Blue Grosbeak and trying to listen but
I did not succeed.

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak - Yes Sunday evening

2013-10-13 Thread Jay McGowan
After walking around the main field at Bluegrass Lane North for a while
without too much success, I checked the corner where Tom originally found
the bird (southwest corner of large corn field off Hanshaw, or last corn on
your left as you travel south on Blugrass from Hanshaw, just before the
chainlink fence begins). It popped out and flew away in response to pishing
(or probably just my presence). I watched it in flight as it headed SW,
eventually landing right above my car, up on a cornstalk at the edge of the
cornfield that is on the west side of the road (so the northeast corner of
the patch of corn that runs along the southern half of the large field on
the west side of the northern section of Bluegrass Lane south of
Hanshaw...some Cardinalid directions for you there!) It sat up in the tops
of the corn for a couple of minutes giving its pink call repeatedly, then
dropped back and finally down into the corn and out of sight. Gary was just
walking back up the road at that point and only got to hear it, but he just
texted that it popped back up into view briefly as I left.

Anyway, in summary, it seems to be frequently the same stretch, so working
that area tomorrow seems pretty likely to be productive, although you
probably won't get a very long look. It does have some blue in the wings
and tail, but not a lot, it's mostly pale rufous/beige overall. I will post
some of my rather distant photos in a few minutes.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak

2012-05-04 Thread B Mcaneny
We have a male BLUE GROSBEAK in our back yard, foraging among the sparrrows and
finches for what appears to be dandelion seeds. This morning, Shirley saw two
blue colored birds in the front yard but could not ID them. Possibly the same
as the Blue Grosbeak.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak Not

2012-05-04 Thread B Mcaneny
My apologies. Jay, Jeff, Tim, and others came by to look for the grosbeak and
found an Indigo Bunting. My ID was a bit hopeful I guess. Jay kindly said he
would rather find a more common bird than miss a rare bird that went
unreported.. Nonetheless, you all can now go back to counting warblers in the
hawthorns.

Good birding,
