[cayugabirds-l] Blue-Headed Vireo

2020-04-24 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
Just heard a blue-headed vireo singing quite loudly outside my window. New
yard bird for me, and I guess also office bird (lots of new office birds
for me this past month :-).

A couple days ago I had a pretty close encounter with a blue-headed vireo
while jogging the six-mile-creek/south-hill-recway area. Got a pretty good
eye-level naked-eye look at the bird, not a frequent occurrence for this
species. Some of my closest bird encounters seem to be while out jogging
and thus binocularless, like with a ruby-crowned kinglet yesterday almost
within touching distance. Or maybe I just tend to remember more of these
"wish I had my bins with me" moments.

My phone just sounded a reminder to lead a Stewart Park bird walk tomorrow,
a reminder I had added to my calendar back before the coviding. Sigh.

Suan

Hello, around 15:40 up about a half mile on the nature trail that leads off of
Salo Dr. in Trumansburg, there was a FOY BLUE-HEADED VIREO passing through the
pines. There was a small mixed warbler flock as well, but I could only make out
a male Myrtle Warbler before they headed on. Otherwise relatively quiet. Being
new in town, I appreciate Marc Devokaitis for giving me the trail tip.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Vireo

We had sun for the Easter egg hunt at Taughannock Falls this morning, but at
3:30, darkling sprinkles have arrived in West Danby, and that has set the birds
outside my door to singing. Among the rest I can hear my first-of-spring
Blue-headed Vireo.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Vireo

2015-04-17 Thread Geo Kloppel
In my yard I've had a Blue-headed Vireo this morning, a few Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, and a new group of brightly-painted White-throated Sparrows. Still
have Fox Sparrows singing. I just spotted a Blue Jay carrying nest material
into a clump of young white pines, the so-called cabbage trees. Ravens are
making a big racket up on the high hill. The Crows seem to be pressing them
pretty hard.

A Blue-headed Vireo came in with a flock of chickadees/etc during the morning
count today. In the cedars/arbovitaes at 1950 Hanshaw Road. I was able to get a
prolonged, clear, eye-level look at it for about 30 seconds. I walked back down
the road to summon Susan for a look. When we returned 20 minutes later we were
unable to call it back in. C'est la vireo! I hope someone is able to re-find it
tomorrow.

Cool, I heard one too on my way to the bus this morning (at 7:40 if it matters
as a basin first). Also year firsts for me were Fox Sparrow and White Crowned
Sparrows both vocalizing in the same area. Add in Cardinal, Phoebe, Junco, and
Purple Finch, and the air was *full* of beautiful song!

[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Vireo, Louie, Hermit Thrush

2010-04-07 Thread bob mcguire
While recording BROWN CREEPER in Shindagan Hollow this morning, I
heard my first of year HERMIT THRUSH singing under the balsams. This
was south, out of the basin.

However, while recording the two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES singing on
Leonard Road, I found a pair of BLUE-HEADED VIREOS doing call-and-
response. One would sing. The other would repeat the same song. The
first would sing, the second would repeat it.
