On Tuesday, our bluebirds were also checking boxes. But the family ( pair and 3 
juveniles, maybe an extra) have been with us all winter. Foraging in curious 
ways down in the field that has now been unmowed for three years. That standing 
vegetation seems to offer more to more species in winter than I ever 
considered.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds have fledged the nest.

Big news in Newfield ... five little eastern bluebird fledgelings emerged
from the blue bird nest box outside our window this morning!

We have been supplementing their diet with live mealworm larvae since mid
April. It seems to have helped. Adults had attempted, unsuccessfully, to
fledge a brood for the last two years. This year they have five young ones
on the wing as of this morning!

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds on Mount Pleasant fields

Bluebirds (small flock, at least from what I could tell; maybe about 8 or so) 
spotted on the Mount Pleasant fields this morning; not the first time this 
winter though. I’m pretty sure they’ve been there a for at least the last 
couple of weeks.

[cayugabirds-l] bluebirds and territory

I have bluebird houses hanging on my garden fence. I also hang a container
of mealworms on the fence right by the houses to attract the bluebirds. I
just watched a bluejay landing at the mealworm container and then the
bluebird pair dive-bombed it and chased it away. I wonder if the bluebirds
are protecting this food source or their nests? And if it is just their
nests they are protecting, if I should move the food container to the
opposite side of the garden?

Snow Buntings, including 2 that stood out in a largish (40?) flock of flying 
Redpolls! 

 

Saw a few little flocks of Horned Larks, then a larger flock at Belltown Dairy, 
Mahaney Rd. at town/ county line, 

then found 3 lovely Bluebirds in a tall bare tree on Davis Rd (Lansing).

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds in Garden

I put up a bluebird box on my garden fence early this spring. A pair of
bluebirds moved in right away, which was wonderful! I believe they are
currently raising/feeding their second clutch of babies. During the raising
of the first clutch, I was rarely in the garden and there were no problems.

However, I am finding it rather stressful for the both of us now that it is
summer and I want to garden and they want to feed their young. Last night
was such a pleasant time to be gardening, which is what I did, since it was
cool. The problem is that the parents are fearful of being in their box
when I am around. The second I walk toward the garden, they fly out.

As the evening progressed last night, the parents and babies were crying so
pitifully to be with one another, my heart almost couldn't take it! I
provide them with a basket of mealworms beside their nest box. I was hoping
they would get accustomed to my presence.

Do bluebirds eventually relax around humans? Is there a maximum length of
time that the babies can be without their young without dying from hunger
or stress, while I garden? Does anyone know? I don't want them to move out!

Thanks for any knowledge anyone can share my way!

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds checking out my nest box

I was absolutely elated this morning to hear a bluebird singing lustily from 
the top perch of my feeder station.  That's the first bluebird I've ever seen 
in my yard in the four years I've been living in Ellis Hollow.  And as I 
watched, it flew off to investigate out one of my bluebird houses.  Fingers 
crossed!

On a related note, I was wondering if bluebirds have started to nest in the 
houses lined up alongside Turkey Hill Road.  Does anyone know?

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds in lansing

It was worth bundling up for a cold walk by Cayuga Lake today (having just 
spent 6 days in balmy Florida).

I found at least 3, maybe more, pairs of beautiful Eastern Bluebirds around #s 
644 -655 on Lansing Station Rd. The males were brilliant blue!
They were with a bunch of DE Juncos and ranged from a hedgerow by a long 
driveway up the hill, to cedar trees and other trees, to the space under a 
house porch roof (over the lower roof of the house at 655); I wondered if they 
go there for shelter at night (faces east).

Then I saw a Mallard pair fly into the parking lot at one of our apartment 
houses, no doubt spooked by hunters down the lake.

Also seen here at # 535:
3 pairs No. Cardinals, 2-3 BC Chickadees, 1 pair of Carolina Wrens that sleep 
in a little nest basket at night, under my front porch roof (faces east), 2-3 
White Breasted Nuthatches, Woodpeckers _ Red Belly, Hairy, Downy, 3 dozen A. 
Goldfinches, a few Mo Do-s, 12 House Sparrows, 4 A. Crows, several Blue Jays 
and DE Juncos.

Yesterday, when I got out of the car in my garage (door opens electronically), 
I heard what I thought was an empty milk jug blowing around, only to see that 
it was actually a small hawk banging against the glass on the side window of 
the garage.

I went right over to help it get out through the big open garage door and saw 
that it was a beautiful little Sharp Shinned Hawk with a slate blue back!
It seemed unharmed as it flew out into the front yard and landed in a tree.
I don't know if it had flown in the garage before my errands or a few moments 
before I found it when I arrived home.

I hope Steve's Towhee shows up on count day!

I am recording feeder counts at the Lab of O from 4-6 PM on Christmas Bird 
Count day, Jan. 1.
If you live in the Count Circle, phone 254-2473 with your feeder counts, if you 
stay home that cold day.

I will try owling in Region 9 in the wee hours. Have had a report of a Great 
Horned Owl in the vicinity of Buck and VanOstrand Rds.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds have fledged in NE Ithaca, Sat 6/11

At 12:40  PM on Saturday, a yellow-gaped, gray-headed EASTERN BLUEBIRD
nestling appeared at the hole of our nest box in northeast Ithaca.  This
was the first time I had ever seen the face of any of these nestlings, so I
thought it was just taking a cool breath or impatiently looking for a
parent.  But then, to my delight and astonishment, I watched this bird
haltingly get its footing on the threshold, lean forward, and fly out of
the box on beautiful, long, new blue wings.



Over the next 40 minutes, my wife Miyoko and our son Tilden and I watched
the other nestlings gradually muster up resolve, hesitating and retreating
like little kids on a three-meter diving board.  The parents continually
voiced encouragement nearby, and still came to deliver food a couple of
times.  Finally, a nestling pushed off from the hole and spread its wings
to the air.  Another followed a few minutes later, and then another.  The
mother bluebird went to the box with a green caterpillar after the fourth
fledgling’s departure, but finding no recipient, flew away with her bill
still laden.  This would seem to confirm that we did see the last bird
fledge.  It also suggests to me that the mother could not or at least did
not count her fledglings.

We think that this is the first time that any of us, even Miyoko the
ornithologist, has ever witnessed the very moment of a bird’s first flight
from the nest.   What a miracle!  We feel very lucky and fired up!!!

* On Friday, I witnessed copulation between a pair of House Wrens,
including our tailless yet dauntless male, for the second time in three
days, on the same favored hookup post on our deck.



* On the Woodleton Boardwalk in Sapsucker Woods on Saturday, I heard and
saw several VEERIES issuing many familiar vocalizations (descending song,
plus “veer,” “vurt,” and “jeewurt” calls), but also quite a lot of high,
thin, waxwing-like whistles.  This is the second strikingly different Veery
vocalization that I’ve learned in the last two weeks (along with the very
surprising parrot-like squawk that we saw a Veery making at the High Vista
Nature Preserve on May 28).

WE have about 16 nest boxes on poles around our field. Initially they were
for bluebirds, and then the tree swallows arrived.  Our strategy: the nest
boxes are erected in pairs: one for the bluebirds, one for the tree
swallows.  House sparrows may move into one box in a pair, but not both.
(They don't like house sparrows for neighbors either.) Same for tree
swallows.  By the time the bluebirds come around, there are still empty
boxes to choose from.  Last year, at least 3 boxes contained bluebird
families.  Fair enough.  Try it, it may provide housing for everyone.

I had a spring treat early this morning.  There were 3 Bluebirds squabbling 
over a nest box.  There were two males for sure, but I could only find one 
female.  There may have been another female that I couldn't find in those low 
light levels.  My Bluebirds have to battle the House Sparrows for a box, but 
usually do win one or two boxes.

I also am seeing more Robins now that there are a few green patches on the 
lawn.  I also have a wet spot on the lawn which has provided a place for a 
drink and bath through out the winter.   Lots of birds come for that.  I had 
the neighborhood Mockingbird a few days ago .  

I have lots of Winterberry bushes which are loaded with fruit, yet I never see 
any birds on them.  I'm wondering if the more cultivated varieties are not as 
tasty as the wilder ones?

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds near Freeville

0800 A flock of 4-5 E. bluebirds, in the company of a Carolina wren, working 
their way close around my house this morning, on Hile School Rd.  I have no 
feeders or other food sources yet, so they presumably like the shrubbiness 
mixed with open areas. 

Beyond that, it was still winter:  a flock of goldfinches, one bluejay foraging 
in yard. At ca. 0730, 20 American crows out of a probable roost N of Ed Hill Rd.

Yesterday a rough-legged hawk visited the area around neighbor's gut pile 
across Hile School Rd from my house, to which American crows responded by 
diving straight down over and over.  This seemed a stronger response than they 
have given to the 2+ red-tailed hawks also visiting regularly.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds checking boxes

Two bald eagles flew over the house a few days ago. At first I thought they 
might be a pair but as I  watched I noticed a bit of aggressiveness  watched 
'til they disappeared to the east. About 5 min. later one came alone back 
towards the lake so I guess it succeeded in getting rid of an interloper.

Depending on where one is looking, at what time of day  weather conditions, 
Cayuga lake is resting place for 1,000s of waterfowl or just 100s. Same is true 
for Sodus Point where last Fri. Kathy Strickland  I had tremendous nos.  
varieties of birds. Not so yesterday when daughter, Becky  I went. 

Snow geese are going over here in great numbers now. Supposedly the special 
hunting season for snows is  23 Jan. - 15 April with 25 as the daily bag limit. 
Snow geese are exceptionally wary so even wherever they land,  if they did 
land where they see decoys, they seem to be wise enough to not return once 
shots are fired. 

I had a pr. of bluebirds atop one of the boxes on the clothesline arm this 
a.m.. Saw something I've never seen before with them. One flew down  got a 4 
or 5 inch piece of grass  took it back up  offered it to the other. It was 
accepted  the bird flew to the box opening. Just about then something scared 
all the birds away. Has anyone else ever seen this with bluebirds?? ..  
 Once bluebirds show ANY interest in the boxes male house sparrows immediately 
sit atop the boxes to discourage or fight with the  bluebirds. Grrr.

At my feeders here at the house I've been regularly having 70 to 80 goldfinches 
since last wk.  quite an increase suddenly. Haven't tried to count the ones 
up at the hill feeders.

I had a wonderful treat this morning.  I spotted a large group of bluebirds 
land in the maple tree by the road.  They flew off quickly, with a few coming 
in closer on the Beech tree.  I went to the sunroom on the south side of the 
house and my hunch was right. They were after the winterberries.  Another large 
Maple is near the winterberry bush so most of them landed in the tree while a 
few were on the bush.  There were 10 bluebirds in all-mostly males.  Such a 
pretty sight with the snow softly falling.  They checked out some older 
winterberries and tried a few red chokeberries. They stayed around the yard for 
about a half hour until the trash truck scared them off.   It was interesting 
to watch the interactions with the other yard birds.  The English Sparrows kept 
jockeying for position in the tree.  The Bluebirds seemed to want to be highest.

It was a nice, birdy morning.  While the Bluebirds were here, I also spotted 
cardinals, chickadees, goldfinches, house finches, juncos, and downy 
woodpeckers.  Such a nice way to start the day.  I haven't had many birds, 
other than house sparrows and chickadees this winter.  The weather has been too 
warm for them to need the feeders.  Oh, I've had tree sparrows here at times.  
I'm missing my nuthatches and tufted titmouses.

It's official: the first time ever that I have Bluebirds nesting in my yard! 
Out on the closeline pole where John Blizzard put a couple of Doug Carlter's 
bluebird boxes. House Wrens usually stake a claim on the one on the tree just 
outside the dining rm window, sometimes another pair on the clothesline pole 
box, but there was a male Bluebird claiming it this time, and the female nearby 
in the redbuds. A Tree Swallow may be in the second one on the pole, but with 
my mowing today I think they've all had enough tension so will check it out 
more closely another day.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds in New York State

I am in the 4th year of my Ph.D. (at Syracuse University) and do
research on how anthropogenic (human-caused)
noise can influence communication in Eastern bluebirds, and thus
influence how they choose their mates.  Last summer we had great
success collecting data throughout Central New York and found
interesting patterns suggesting bluebirds sing differently and have
different coloration in areas that are more affected by anthropogenic
disturbance.  I am writing because I am looking for more sites in New
York state to conduct research this spring.  Any sites with a minimum
of 3-4 pairs of bluebirds would be usable (I am looking for both
relatively disturbed and undisturbed sites).  If you have any
suggestions for sites (parks, wildlife refuges, trails, ect.), or have
