[cayugabirds-l] Caspian terns at red lighthouse jetty

2021-04-25 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

There's a new arrival of 4 Caspian terns on the red lighthouse jetty late this
morning, well viewable from Stewart Park and other locations for those who
would like to see their first terns of the year.

 Happy birding,

 Kevin

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns night flight - and Myers this am.

2015-08-08 Thread Marie P. Read
Lots of Caspian Terns squawking as they flew around the spit area at Myers Park
this am. I was in a blind at a distance down the creek, so couldn't see well,
but at least once I thought I could discern a Caspian fledgling.

Also, an interesting occurrence as I waited for Mrs. Kingfisher to show up (she
eventually did). At one point I could hear a fledgling Osprey begging
plaintively very close to my blind on the bank, but hidden by vegetation. I
managed to angle myself for a look out the blind window, and there were two
Ospreys (adult and fledgling) standing side by side in the shallow water at the
edge of an area of exposed gravel in the creek! As far as I could tell they
were just lounging there, but only for a couple of minutes.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns Cayuga Inlet/ Stewart Park

2015-06-22 Thread Dave Nutter
I saw 4 CASPIAN TERNS foraging at Van Dyne Spoor Rd on Sunday. They were
distant but I thought they were adults and that it would be too early for any
juveniles flying. In Ithaca I've assumed adults at this time of year to have
had an early nest failure. It's not far for them from breeding grounds in Lake
Ontario.

[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns, Am Bittern, Solitary Sandpipers at Montezuma

2014-08-03 Thread M Miller
Thought I would include what I saw to keep with the basic purpose of the list
(no offense intended ). A quick drive through Sunday afternoon turned up
plenty of Common Gallinules (with chicks/young), a couple Solitary Sandpipers,
Green Herons, Caspian Terns (1 changing to non-breeding), American Bittern,
Great Egrets, at least 1 Snow Goose still hanging around. Also, all the
“usual” residents; GB Herons, DC Cormorants, PB Grebes, Bald Eagles, Osprey,
etc.

I am a frequent visitor to the refuge and although I was disappointed many
years ago when my daily bike rides on the auto route were no longer allowed, I
fully understand the reason for it. I also know that many refuges (I have
visited over 100) do allow walking along their drives (but not all, such as
Ottawa NWR in OH). As already mentioned, some areas the birds are more “immune”
to human presence, such as Corkscrew Sanctuary or Ding Darling NWR in FL. Here
at Montezuma, remaining in your vehicle does allow you to see much more
(especially rails, sora, bitterns, etc.). It is also the law set down by the
Fish Game Service (this being Federal property). There are signs before
during the drive that say to remain in your vehicle that walking or bike
riding are prohibited. The primary purpose of the US Refuge system is to
provide suitable habitat for wildlife, the convenience of visitors is a
secondary consideration only. Even so, there are several pull-out areas along
the drive (and the photo-blind) that do allow you to get out of your vehicle.

If you disagree with these laws, please feel free to voice your opinions to the
refuge office (not the visitor center that is run by volunteers, we don’t have
the authority to make or bend the rules). I also agree that enforcement should
be more consistent, and maybe better signs are a good idea. I fully understand
that refuge personnel don’t have the time to constantly stop every person that
is out of their vehicle. I rarely get through the drive without seeing someone
violating this rule.

I heard (but didn't see) a Red Crossbill flying over lower Sapsucker Woods

There also was a single Caspian Tern flying north directly up Sapsucker Woods
Road, then veering off to the west on the upper part of the road, at around
08:35. Was anyone watching from the Lab - did it make a pass over the pond?

On a walk around the pond at around noon here at Hospicare, I heard and then
saw two CASPIAN TERNS, an adult and a juvenile, both vocalizing. They were
circling higher and higher, calling, heading northward toward the lake.

Also, this past Saturday night at about 9 o'clock, a SCREECH OWL sang its

Please take a very close look at any CATEs sighted in this area. A colleague has
banded and color marked (tarsus) several in Canada. He has used yellow and red
bands. Particularly interested in the yellow bands as those birds have GPS tags.

Photos, exact location, time and date would be helpful.

Lots of Tree Swallows yesterday apparently heading south.

[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns, Pectoral Sandpipers, and more.

2011-04-15 Thread Mark Miller
A quick run through Montezuma brought fewer ducks than last couple weeks but
did see 15 Caspian Terns and about a dozen Pectoral Sandpipers,
all in the new shorebird pool (before curve). East Road, Van Dyne Spoor
Railroad roads had a lot of Wood Ducks, DC Cormorants, 1 Horned Grebe,
and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers (at Van Dyne Spoor Rd turnaround). Not much
at the MAC except a Sandhill Crane putting on a display for himself.
