[cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler in Ithaca (?), Sat 5/11
On Saturday afternoon at about 2:10 PM, from the new housing development at 400 Spencer Road in Ithaca, I heard what I think was a singing CERULEAN WARBLER up the slope (along lower Stone Quarry Road). I couldn’t confirm this bird by sight (no binoculars, didn’t even try). But I do feel that Cerulean is the most likely ID, despite its local rarity and potential for confusion with other singers. [cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler
This morning, Rick Lightbody and I walked Sapsucker woods. Around the pond, highlights included: BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, AM. REDSTART, WOOD THRUSH, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and BARRED OWL; mostly viewed in the birch tree part of the trail. We continued across the road to the boardwalk and saw a N. WATERTHRUSH, RED EYED VIREO, and OVENBIRD. Then to the power-line trail: we were chasing down a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER when a CERULEAN WARBLER came into view (complete with white throat and dark neck-band). From the far parking lot, it was at the far end of the power-line trail, up in a big leaf aspen tree on the airport/rt 13 side of the trail. [cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler at Lindsay-Parson's again Sunday
Today was the jackpot with a bonus after three trips looking for Worm-eating Warblers. I broke with routine and walked in on the RR tracks at Lindsay-Parson's Preserve to the blue trail. Two Worm-eating Warblers were on the back of the blue trail feeding low and only about 25 feet away! Another was trilling, previous to seeing these guys, but I didn't count it because it could have been one of the two I saw. I got a recording of their Tik calls while feeding. A Black-billed Cuckoo was in the same area farther back east of the trail. A Cerulean Warbler was singing just a little way up the blue trail from the RR tracks. That is very close to the back of the pond where Chris heard one yesterday I believe. It sang three or four times then was quiet. It was too steep and brushy to try for a look. [cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler? N Park Preserve to Hammond Hill
Today Ken and I went to the North parking area for the Roy Park Preserve for the first time. We walked the trail from there up into Hammond Hill State Forest. Most of the birds were pretty quiet in the light rain. About 20 minutes up from where the trail enters the woods, though, there was a warbler singing from the tree tops that we were not familiar with (this was at about 9 AM). We never did see it, but Ken recorded it with his iphone so that we might identify it when we got home. Now that we are home and comparing this to other warbler songs, to us, it sounds like a Cerulean Warbler. Have others heard/seen Ceruleans there? Here is a link to the recording--sorry that the quality is poor and very faint. Can someone either confirm this as Cerulean, or let us know if it is something else? Thanks, Diane Morton Ken Kemphues Sharing sounds is new to us-- not sure how to prevent the site from playing the Sapsucker Woods Barred Owl recording just after the faint warbler. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler? N Park Preserve to Hammond Hill
Hi Diane The song is a Blackburnian Warbler. It stutters in the middle like a Cerulean but ends by going very high at the end - almost off the audible scale for most of us - rather than ending with a loud zreee The habitat is right for Blackburnian up there As well. Thank you! Yes, after reviewing more of the songs in the Macaulay library we agree that it is a Blackburnian warbler. (Suan also suggested Blackburnian to us).
