Snowed in, so had to make do with yard birds! I was thrilled to
FINALLY see our first winter finch--a single Common Redpoll at the
feeders here in Brooktondale. Hope he brings his friends.
Also, a lingering Hermit Thrush was around again.

I knew that with so many people reporting REDPOLLS, we would have one sooner
or later. Well, it is later, but one just arrived on the niger feeder with
a host of Goldfinches and about 3 Pine Siskins. I thought I might gift wrap
it for Shirley.

I just noticed a Common Redpoll perched near the north feeders at the Lab.
I didn't see it join the siskins and goldfinches at the feeder, and now
I've lost track of it completely o everything just flushed. But worth
keeping eyes and ears open already for redpolls.

This morning a single female Common Redpoll was perched briefly above
our feeders while I got a good look through binoculars. But it was
scared off by a squirrel just as it swooped down to the feeders among
all the house finches, goldfinches & juncos.
But now it's back at a feeder and I decided
I had a single Common Redpoll this morning when I arrived at the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology a little after 9:00. The redpoll was calling frequently,
over the bird-feeding garden by the Lab observatory, and perching in the
hawthorns along the short boardwalk behind the bird-feeding garden. Wes

For those interested, there was a Common Redpoll hunched on our feeder on
South Hill, weathering out a snowstorm, as early as December 17. The bird
has not been seen again.
It seems few other people have been seeing these?

Good year for new yard birds so far, must be that orange Agway suet.
Yesterday I took a picture of this bird through the window and just got
around to ID'ing.

After birding all day with Dave Nutter in Summerhill, and not seeing any new
birds for the year, I arrived home and saw a Common Redpoll at my feeders.
I won't be around on New Year's Day, so whom ever has my area, should stop
by my feeders. Email me if you need my address.
Happy New Year,
