Had a great, but very cold, dark morning yesterday at Red Crossbill site in Morgan Hill State Forest (as described by Bob McGuire). Flocks of Pine Siskins, Red Crossbills, and Common Redpolls as well as a Northern Shrike. Birds were still active in the area at 11 am, when I left. Gritting, eating larch cones, and biting at twigs--possibly for lichen, bark, or insects. There were many flyovers, long intervals with no birds, and then times when many birds were nearby. Dress warmly!
