I am seeing similar woodpecker behavior today. A female Downy has been clinging
stock still to the top of a nearly empty suet feeder for the better part of an
hour, and not even in a place where she can feed. No other birds are at our

I've been meaning to post this for a few months. I noticed a female downy
at my feeder about six weeks ago who did not move for about 25 minutes. I

My friend Stefhan Ohlström, who lives near EcoVillage on Ithaca's West HIll, just sent me 2 photos of a Downy Woodpecker clinging awkwardly to a hummingbird feeder and apparently managing to drink from it. I don't have hummingbird feeders, so I don't know how unusual it is. It certainly looks rid

While outside a few minutes ago photographing, I heard a distant
woodpecker, presumably a Downy, drumming. Sign of spring on a very cold
day!
