Yet to have an Eastern Phoebe here this year, but got to watch a Northern
Mockingbird do a pretty good imitation this morning.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Phoebe

2018-04-18 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
I observed one of the Phoebes, recently returned at the Burns Road Reservoir,
yesterday feeding very close to the inlet river water. It would perch on
flotsam and apparently pick bugs off the water surface. I think they get very
creative in these marginal conditions.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Phoebe

2018-04-18 Thread Dave Nutter
Over the past couple weeks of cold since Phoebes arrived I have seen them often
dropping to the ground like Eastern Bluebirds for more sedentary prey. I also
recently watched a Phoebe eat several Poison Ivy berries. Phoebes’ adaptability
lets them survive despite the shortage of aerial food.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Phoebe, Arts Quad

2016-02-02 Thread Karen Steffy
I wonder if there has been a Phoebe hanging around Cornell all winter? I
thought that I saw one in early December at Beebe Lake. I wasn’t 100% sure,
however, because it was backlit on a grey day, and all I could get was the tail
bobbing as it kept flying farther away from me. And, of course, I didn’t have
binoculars with me. A week or so later, I ran into someone who had also seen a
Phoebe near the small footbridge (I think) on Beebe Lake. (Hopefully, he’s on
the list and can add his experience.)

Well, it's possible. The singer of the phoebe song was pretty physically
distant from the starlings I saw and heard, and wasn't accompanied by any other
bird vocalizations. And the song itself was completely convincing to me, for
what it's worth.

I'll keep my ears open tomorrow and try to track it down if I hear it.

Yesterday morning at Sapsucker Woods, the starlings were doing kingbird and
wood duck and meadowlark (among others, no doubt).
Meanwhile, there was legitimate singing from chickadee, titmouse, cardinal:
sounded and felt like spring!

I swear I've been hearing an EAPH singing the past few days... just around
dusk last night and this morning at 6:45am! I had one nesting on my barn ALL
summer, and screaming her "PHOE-BE!" song all summer, but just realized she's
been quiet for awhile. Then I heard it last night and this morning. I guess I
assumed she'd already moved on? Could it be someone else?\

BTW I'm not in the Finger Lakes region right now- I'm in Cobleskill- Schoharie,
County

[cayugabirds-l] EASTERN PHOEBE

2013-02-15 Thread Jill Vaughan
About a week and a half ago, during one of several swings I made up Cayuga
Vista Drive looking for the Northern Shrike, I saw a bird in the hedgerow
that dropped down as soon as I got my binoculars up. I had observed a dark
head, light chest. I waited for it to appear again, but it did not. I
returned later in the day but did not see it. Last week, I saw the bird
when I did not have binoculars with me. (What kind of birder am I, huh?)
It was in the same area as it had been. Two days ago, I posted the
Northern Shrike and again saw the mystery bird with the flycatcher head and
coloring of a phoebe. I checked eBird, and decided it was too early for an
appearance in our area. This afternoon, Sue Henne (an experienced birder)
emailed me that she had just seen an EASTERN PHOEBE on Cayuga Vista Drive.
I called her immediately, and she said there was no doubt, since she had
been quite close to the bird, and even observed the tail-flicking. With the
"backup" of her identification, I am now comfortable to report to that a
week and a half ago and again two days ago, I saw an EASTERN PHOEBE on
Cayuga Vista Drive. Sue and I drove there right after we talked, and while
the phoebe made no appearance, two RED-TAILED HAWKS were busy hunting and a
flock of seven AMERICAN ROBINS perched in a tree.

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern phoebe sighting

2012-01-14 Thread M Kardon
This morning, while surveying my back yard
where I have a bird feeder, an Eastern phoebe
flew into our garden and landed on the tip of a
garden stake. Less than 10 feet from me, it
bobbed its tail a few times while I observed
it with my binoculars, then it flew off.

According to eBird, this is a very unusual
sighting in Tompkins County in January.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Phoebe!

2011-12-25 Thread Dave Nutter
Last night I learned that a few days ago (maybe mid-week?) Stefhan Ohlström saw what sounds to me like an Eastern Phoebe at his house on West Hill near EcoVillage. It was near his pond, I think. He hasn't seen it since. --Dave NutterOn Dec 24, 2011, at 08:04 AM, Marie P Read wrote:I know it's been a mild winter, but.there's an Eastern Phoebe foraging in my backyard as I write! (Wah??)

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Phoebe

2011-02-17 Thread joe & Diana
 Hi All,
I took a walk today with my dog and I saw an Easter Phoebe on the Charlie
Major Nature Trail in Skaneateles. It was at the 2nd bridge coming in from the
Franklin Rd. entrance. There were also a large flock of Cedar Waxwings, a
Brown Creeper, Cardinals and Chickadees singing, Goldfinch, Robins, American
Crows, and some that got away as the light faded. Nice place for birding if you
haven't been there.
