Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern towhee

2020-04-12 Thread Ken Haas
I had our FOY Towhee ( 2, in fact) here in my backyard near Mecklenberg today.
Since Project Feeder Watch was extended by a month, it’s the first time I’ve
ever in the 20 years I’ve been doing it, I’ve recorded a Towhee for PFW. Other
first time PFD records (all in April) are Pine Warbler, Chipping Sparrow,
Phoebe, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Normally, PFW would end by the end of
March.

2020-04-12 Thread Melissa Groo
Our Towhee is back today (or at least this morning is the first time I've
heard him) here at our home in Caroline. Just repeatedly uttering the
"drink" part of "drink-your-tea."
One day earlier than I registered his return last year.

Hi,
I saw an Eastern Towhee, my first, on the Black Diamond Trail this week
south of the Gorge Road crossing, very busily flitting around us as we
stood and watched, furiously singing 'drink your tea'! Is there perhaps a
nest nearby? Anyone else see it?

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Towhee

2014-04-13 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
First of yard year EASTERN TOWHEE showed up today (W Meadow Dr Lansing) singing
his head off but with an unusual (and at first baffling) added strong second
syllable that challenged my memorized pattern to something at first
unidentifiable: drink-a-you-TEEE or drink-you-your-TEEE; the trill was flatter,
and less upscale than I remembered so I had to get a visual on him to verify it
wasn’t some really aberrant song sparrow or other mystery.

On top of that, last year’s 1st Towhee was Apr 23 and 2012’s was Apr 26 so he’s
very early for this location.

Another item of interest: he sang two upsweep notes while foraging (after he
stopped singing). At first I was sure there were 2 birds one responding to the
other from about 10’ away. But after I found him and watched him, I could see
he was throwing his voice: the first note was a few semitones higher and really
seemed to come from a distance away, then the second note was more rooted at
his location (on the ground). Fascinating trick.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Towhee

2014-04-02 Thread Linda Orkin
Carolina Wrens can be heard to sing at almost any time and quite amazingly
they seem to have survived this brutal winter, at least the ones I know
about did. Perhaps the one that has been at the Lab of O feeders is the
one that now sings a ringing song on the north side of the building for
the past two weekends of bird walks there. He is quite the charmer.

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Towhee in Interlaken

2012-02-06 Thread Marty Schlabach
On a Sunday walk along the old Black Diamond RR bed between Powell Rd and the
village of Interlaken, Mary Jean and I found an EASTERN TOWHEE. Also sighted
were downy, red belly, chickadee, white breasted nuthatch, titmouse, cardinal,
blue bird, blue jay and red tail. Often seen, but not yesterday, were
mockingbird, robin and an array of sparrows.
