An evening grosbeak just spent 5 minutes hanging out on the ground at our

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak in northeast Ithaca

2012-10-27 Thread Tom Schulenberg
This morning I watched a male Evening Grosbeak feeding in a tree in the
wooded gully just west of Liddell Lab, along Freese Road. There were
robins, cardinals, and a flock of waxwings in the tree as well, but I
easily could have walked past the grosbeak (especially with the fog!) had
it not called several times to give itself away. Other birds of note this
morning were a pair of ravens, and a Vesper Sparrow (along the east side of
the Equine Research Park woods).

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak

There is currently a heavily molting but definitively male EVENING GROSBEAK
scrapping with the Blue Jays for a position on my feeders.

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak and other feeder birds

2010-02-27 Thread bilbaker
The female Evening Grosbeak I have previously reported is still here. I
heard her yesterday late in the morning and she showed up early this
afternoon at the feeders. One interesting behavioral note: she won't
tolerate Blue Jays on the feeder when she is there. Today, for the fourth
time since she arrived, just about a month ago, I watched her chase Jays
away from the feeder while she was feeding. They are the only others I've
seen her chase off. She does not chase or try to intimidate the smaller
birds such as Chickadees, Titmice, the various Sparrows and Downey
Woodpeckers etc

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak

2010-02-03 Thread bilbaker
After an absence yesterday the Evening Grosbeak showed up again this
morning at about 9:15. This is the 3rd time it has shown up at roughly that
time. For those that are interested in trying for this bird please note
that I am having work done outside tomorrow AM. Friday AM will be much
quieter.

While I have been in and out this AM, and could have easily missed it, I
have not seen the Evening Grosbeak again today. Yesterday it did show up
again in the early afternoon.

[cayugabirds-l] EVENING GROSBEAK

2010-01-29 Thread bilbaker
I just (8:15 AM) had a single female EVENING GROSBEAK at my porch sunflower
seed feeder. The address is 10 South Rd in Caroline Center. This is just
barely within the basin limits, but is definitely in. I will be out for
much of the morning, but the feeder is visible from the road and the drive
way. I have one poor but recognizable pic that I will figure out a place to
post later.
