[cayugabirds-l] FOS Phoebe and Bluebirds

2023-03-23 Thread Evelyn Weinstein
Hi all,

This morning in Brooktondale, our Phoebes are back! Singing and cruising
around a porch. Also a male and female Eastern Bluebird were spotted going
in and out of a nest box near our ponds. Spring is indeed in swing! Happy
Thursday!

[cayugabirds-l] FOS

2023-03-21 Thread Carol Keeler
I’ve just had my FOS male Purple Finch arrive. I’ve had about 4 Song Sparrows
for a week. Luckily the number of blackbirds has diminished. Just a few bossy
grackles at a time. I had a Carolina Wren a few times this winter and a
Mockingbird but haven’t seen either in quite a while.
I have a starling pulling out the nesting materials in a House Sparrow nest
chalet. Oh, I finally have heard a bluebird. They often nest here. That’s my
spring report.

Nice, Carol. I had 6 of them yesterday at my feeders, just in time to include
them on Project Feeder Watch! Haven’t seen any since last Fall.

[cayugabirds-l] FOS birds

2015-03-22 Thread Carol Keeler
Since other people have mentioned getting Song Sparrows, I've been on the watch
for one at my feeders. Tonight, one showed up. FOS for me. Yesterday I had
another FOS- a Turkey Vulture on rt 41A.

Yesterday was serendipitous for me. I was backing into the garage and glanced
up and there was a Sharpshin Hawk on top of the Weeping Cherry. Luckily, I had
brought my camera with a 80-400 mm lens with me when I went to Homer. I
stopped the car about halfway into the garage. Got out the camera, lowered the
window some, and fired away. The bird stayed for many shots. It left its
perch to chase a Cardinal, without success, and returned to the tree. I moved
the car out of the garage and again the Sharpie stayed put. A great day for
Sharpie photos. Today, I was out on the sunporch finishing lunch, looked up
and the Sharpie was putting on the brakes so it didn't hit the sliding door.
Those tails make great brakes. Looks like this guy will be around quite a bit.
It can have all the House Sparrows it wants, but not my Cardinals. I've had
four pairs of Cardinals this winter. The most I've ever had.

In case you are interested, here's a link to the Sharpie images.

[cayugabirds-l] FOS catbird

2013-05-04 Thread Carol Keeler
I put out my jelly and oranges two days ago because the Oriole should be
showing up soon. BTW, I put up the Hummingbird feeder as well. Got my FOS
Gray Catbird at the jelly feeder this morning. Also a Robin and many House
Finches have been partaking of the jelly, too. No Oriole or Hummingbird yet.

At the seed feeder I had a White Crown Sparrow. My Serviceberry is in bloom,
so it's time for the White Crowns. I only had White Throated Sparrows for a
few days quite a while ago now. Still waiting for the House Wren and Rose
Breasted Grosbeaks to show up.

[cayugabirds-l] FOS American Redstart

2012-05-07 Thread Donna Scott
My first of season American Redstart seen from the pavement of Lansing Station
Rd., Lansing, in a thicket of Russian Olives and Cedar trees, after spending
over an hour slogging thru the mud, poison ivy, and prickly rose bushes up in
the woods and seeing only nicely singing Catbirds all over up there. May have
been a No. Mocking bird singing there too, but didn't see it.

Just had my FOS Chipping Sparrow at my feeders. Must be moving North from the

By the way, please report your first sightings of Orioles and Hummingbirds.
That's how I tell when to put out my feeders for them. After they are reported
in the Ithaca area, they show up here a week or two later.
