[cayugabirds-l] FOY house wren

2024-04-21 Thread Suan Yong
A FOY house wren was singing at lighthouse point this morning, along with
Carolina Wren and a Winter Wren with a very interesting intro to its song,
while working with the Cayuga Bird Club conservation action committee and some
Cornell women's soccer players clearing privet.

Also heard Rusty Blackbirds, briefly seeing at least two. Ospreys were circling
noisily usually when a juvie Bald Eagle was in the area, though later seemingly
in some kind of display, one bird clutching a small fish in one talon and
flapping around awkwardly.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Brown Thrasher in Newfield

2024-04-09 Thread Laura J. Heisey
I got several good looks at my FOY Brown Thrasher this morning. This is the
earliest arrival I've recorded in my neighborhood, by one day.

Merlin reported what would be a FOY Field Sparrow, but I was too busy watching
the Brown Thrasher and the 2 Northern Mockingbirds to notice.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Eastern Meadowlark

2024-03-07 Thread Alyssa Johnson
I visited the grasslands this afternoon at the Finger Lakes National Forest
in hopes of getting at least 1 new “FOY” species, and as soon as I started
walking into the field, I heard that sweet meadowlark song! I enjoyed
watching him fly around landing in the grass, and fluttering to treetops
for about an hour. At one point I thought I heard a response song, but it
was a group of starlings!

I was in the field just at the crest of Searsburg Rd, on the right heading
west. There’s a gate into the field where Interloken Trail crosses.

Also heard many Robins singing, a pair of bluebirds canoodling, and even a
Raven carrying sticks.

Another “FOY” was finding an Eastern Spotted Newt in our Pond.

Such a beautiful afternoon!

[cayugabirds-l] FOY yard birds

2023-04-07 Thread Alyssa Johnson
It seems like the Chipping Sparrows, Eastern Towhees, and Eastern Phoebes all
took the same flight in to the Finger Lakes this week!

Yesterday I saw a chipping sparrow at the feeders. I also heard, then saw, the
towhee bopping around in a thicket at the edge of the yard. This morning I
heard the phoebe singing!

Unrelated to birds, I also saw my FOY bats in Geneva on Tuesday.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] FOY Osprey

2023-03-29 Thread Robyn Bailey
There was a single Osprey on the Myer’s Hill nest in Lansing this morning when
I drove by. It wasn’t there yesterday for my commute, but it could have arrived
later in the day and I would have missed it. But it’s there now, and I was glad
to see it.

That nest on that platform over those lights over Union Fields in Cass Park had
2 Ospreys sitting on it this afternoon as I walked by on the Black Diamond
Trail about 2:30pm. The birds were across from each other, not snuggling nor
obviously ecstatic, but clearly they knew & accepted each other, so it looks
like a mated pair has returned.

Three hours later, when I walked south along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, the
nest was not occupied, but there was an Osprey perched in each of 2 separate
arrays of lights over the fields. Maybe they aren’t quite used to being
together yet. Or maybe they aren’t quite used to the little kids and their
parents setting up to practice soccer at what looked to me like a respectful
distance from the nest. I think the Ospreys will get used to the situation and
get to business quickly. At least the Fish Crows were no longer playing on the
nest.

None of the nests around Allan Treman State Marine Park had any Ospreys nearby:
not the platform in the middle of the field northwest of the marina near the
lakeshore, not the platform closer to Taughannock Boulevard and the Hangar
Theatre, not the platform at the northwest corner of Newman Golf Course across
Cayuga Inlet from the Treman boat ramp. However, I did briefly see an Osprey
over the marina as I arrived and much later I heard a couple of chirps.

Of course these observations are from the guy who yesterday walked past the
west side of the Children’s Garden about the same time Duane saw an Osprey
flying across the road and water on the Garden’s east side, and later failed
to notice an Osprey off of Stewart Park when Suan was there. Birds are mobile
and sneaky.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY fish crow

2023-03-08 Thread Alyssa Johnson
I heard my FOY Fish Crow in Geneva this morning. I‘ve heard and seen them
throughout the city and along the lake front in years past, but I was walking
along Washington St when I heard (then saw) it this morning. If anyone has tips
on visual ID, please share! As far as I know, there is a slight size difference
between them and Americans. I always rely on what they sound like though,
because I can’t tell them visually apart from American Crows.

The funny trick I learned in the orno course I took in college is to ask the
crow “are you an American Crow?” And if they say “UH-UH”, they are a Fish Crow
:)

[cayugabirds-l] FOY songbird nest building

2022-03-17 Thread Robyn Bailey
This morning I had my personal FOY songbird nest! A Carolina Wren was bringing
nest material to a former nest site, a nest shelf attached to the side of my
home in Lansing. It made multiple trips while the mate sang. They often
surprise me by how early and how late they continue nesting here (3-3-2012
earliest nest building, 9-12-2020 latest fledging date, from my personal
NestWatch data).

Has anyone else seen songbird nest-building activity? (I know raptors get an
early start.)

Best,
Robyn Bailey

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Sandhill Cranes @ MAC

2022-03-05 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Currently looking at 2 Sandhill Cranes at the Montezuma Audubon Center. One of
our volunteers, Richard, spotted them in the behind the building on the berm
between the two marshes. I have been eagerly looking and waiting to see them
show up and here they are  I can’t say how long they’ll hang out here
specifically, but I’d say the sooner you can come (today) the better chance you
have. The Montezuma Audubon Center building is only open Tues-Sat, 10-4. The
property is owned by NYSDEC, so even if the building is closed, you are welcome
to enjoy the trails sunrise to sunset.

Check this out for more general information about the MAC: Virtual Tour of the
Montezuma Audubon
Center

Any other sightings of cranes in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, please share!

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Fox Sparrows

2021-04-01 Thread Gladys J Birdsall
I also enjoyed watching two beautiful Fox Sparrows this morning, kicking
up a storm on the soft lawn under a spruce tree.  One found a larve of
some sort.  It would whack it on the ground and mash it in its bill,
back and forth.  It took several minutes but managed to eat the whole
thing.  What beauties the Fox Sparrows are.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] FOY Phoebe & Armitage Rd

2021-03-25 Thread anneb . clark
And I have two Phoebes back in my yard just now, one singing and one foraging
in usual areas
A cowbird at feeders. Song sparrow singing and meadowlarks in field west on
Hile School rd from my house on Tuesday.
Last two evenings, Hooded and common merganser pairs in Wetland with black duck
pair and several Mallard and Canada goose pairs. A woodcock belted past the
house yesterday morning early, over the damp field where I heard peenting
earlier in week.
And I Think the one persistent Common Redpoll has bid farewell to the niger
feeder. Haven’t seen it since Monday.

2021-03-25 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Good morning!

I drive along Armitage Road in Savannah/Tyre (not sure township) on my way to
work every day, and the "wet woods" were hopping with bird sounds today! Also,
unfortunately, a lot of squished frogs in the road. I stopped to looked
initially for salamanders, didn't see any.

But, I heard my FOY Eastern Phoebe! As well as Red-bellied/Pileated WPs,
American Robins, Common Grackles, Song Sparrows, Mourning Doves, etc. Nothing
*too* exciting yet, but if you're in the area it's worth a stop!

Have a beautiful day!

[cayugabirds-l] FOY snow geese over Union Springs

2020-11-27 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Daughter, Becky Sewell & I saw several large flocks of snow geese this
morning flying east to west towards Cayuga Lake. A very few Canadas flew
much lower, maybe 50 compared to a couple thousand snows. We saw Snows
much earlier in Nov. last yr., perhaps because it was colder, & we also
had snow squalls & flurries last yr. . According to my Oct-Nov. NYSEG
bill, this yr. has been 6 deg. warmer than last yr..

The Mill pond along Rte. 90 here in Union Springs has been empty of
ducks except for a few buffles 3 wks. ago. Factory St. pond has more
ducks now. For now, it's not worth a trip to look for much here or even
along the lake which was absolutely bare when I made a trip to Ithaca
last Sunday. When I came back home on Rte. 89, I saw only a few mallards
along Sheldrake except looking down from the bluffs north of Sheldrake
where I saw a large flock of buffles diving & playing (?) &  being
observed by maybe 6 female mallards.

Be aware if you are planning a trip north that the 34B bridge in Lansing
by the elementary school is closed for the next 2 yrs.. The aged & weary
bridge over the gorge is being demolished to be replaced by a different
type. Detour takes you over on Rte. 34. Some folks are going down Myers
Rd. to get around. There are other ways to go on 34 & then get back to
34B without going the steep hills on Rte. 90   between Genoa & King Ferry.

I had my sunroom window open so I could photograph the birds. Who should show
up but my FOY male Oriole. He was very cooperative and I got some great shots.
He came within ten feet of me on the rock wall. He’s never done that before.
He went to the grape. He rummaged around in the flower garden for quite a
while.

I have 10 goldfinches in my serviceberries which makes the bushes very colorful.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY migrants at Montezuma Audubon

2019-05-03 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
At the Montezuma Audubon Center (Route 89, Savannah) we had our FOY
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Baltimore Oriole's on Thursday 5/2, and a FOY
Ruby-throated Hummingbird today, 5/3!

RBGR was seen feeding on black oil sunflower seeds on the ground. BAOR was
enjoying fresh oranges and nectar from the feeders. RTHU was also seen at the
nectar feeder.

On Sunday afternoon (21 April), while checking for Blue-gray Gnatcatchers

Fall Creek and Newman Golf Course by the parking mud for anglers, I also
encountered a male Black-and-white Warbler working the vine-covered trunk of a

RE: [cayugabirds-l] FOY?

2018-05-09 Thread Wesley M. Hochachka
Hello Judith,

Yes, there have been a number of people seeing Warbling Vireos in the last
several days. You can see a representative sample of this by looking at a map
of the reports in eBird here:
https://ebird.org/map/warvir?neg=true=false=false=Z=on=5=12=cur=2018=2018
. You will need to zoom into the Ithaca area on the map (which shows all
Warbling Vireo reports for the month of May this year), to see the exact
locations around Ithaca. When the map starts to show points instead of colored
squares, you can click on the point markers to see information on the dates and
other species seen at that location.

Hi-

I was birding this morning on the Newman golf course side of the inlet and am
pretty sure I saw a Warbling Vireo. I got good looks at the bird and watched
it as it sang. It was very plain with very little if any yellow on its breast
or sides. I'm quite familiar with other vireos (especially the blue-headed and
red-eyed). Has anyone else seen a Warbling Vireo in the area?

Thanks.

The wren was here yesterday and this AM we had the first Yellow Warbler
arrive and sing a few times. The Grosbeak showed up at the feeders this
AM and surprisingly was a female. Up here on the hill we are usually
several days later than warmer Ithaca so these were extra special.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Northern Orioles

2018-04-25 Thread Nari Mistry
Yesterday at about 8:30 am I heard our first of the year Baltimore
Oriole song in our backyard. Although it seemed to be flying around
singing & establishing it's territory, I could not see it. Can't tell if
this is particularly early, as every year I see the first male orioles
exactly as the Japanese Quince flowers open. This year the flowers are
obviously behind schedule.

This morning I saw another(?) Oriole fly off from the tree near the
Dodge Rd. bridge, as I approached around the curve.

A Pileated Woodpecker went around the backyard this morning.  This is
also the time when two males show up and compete showing off on adjacent
trees. One has been occasionally coming to our suet feeder this winter.
