Good evening, Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend! It was a great weekend to go birding. I wanted to follow up with what we found during the birding trip at the Owasco Flats Nature Reserve on Saturday, May 23. Thank you to those that participated. It certainly was a chilly morning, but we still had some great birds. See below for complete list in the order we saw or heard within a 3 hour timeframe - 45 total spp: Great-crested flycatcher (heard) American crow Red-eyed vireo Common yellowthroat Canada goose Yellow warbler Red-winged blackbird Catbird Bluejay Scarlet tanager Tree swallow White-breasted nuthatch Chipping sparrow American goldfinch Black-capped chickadee (heard) Red-bellied woodpecker (heard) Tufted titmouse (heard) Song sparrow Great blue heron Eastern wood pewee Northern flicker (heard) Chestnut-sided warbler (many singing, heard only) Wood duck Yellow-throated vireo Ring-billed gull Northern oriole Mourning dove American robin Green heron Warbling vireo (heard) Common grackle Herring gull Bank swallow Belted kingfisher (heard) Veery (heard) Barn swallow Mallard Chimney swift Eastern phoebe Virginia rail (heard) Ruby-throated hummingbird Empidonax spp. (guessing it was an Alder, but had trouble with lighting to identify correctly) Pileated woodpecker (heard) Blackpoll warbler Northern cardinal While you can bird the OFNR anytime, we won't have any scheduled bird trips now until the fall. Our next event is a canoe/kayak trip on June 20. Additional information on that will be forthcoming. Thank you, Noelle Rayman --
