A fox sparrow showed up at our feeders today.  We hadn't seen one throughout 
the migration season, until now.  Probably helped that Phil Welser is home and 
putting his younger eyes to work.  He also had a tree sparrow today.

Ornithology trails this afternoon. The main pond is still icebound.

hill that a Fox Sparrow found some bare ground to rake at the edge of my yard. 
This evening one of my house’s resident big brown bats is out flying about, and

On Sunday 25 October I saw a Fox Sparrow along the Black Diamond Trail (the old 
railroad grade) near Cass Park. It flew out of the same patch of Goldenrods 
that was also feeding three American Goldfinches, at least two White-throated 
Sparrows, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a Pine Siskin.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow ; Pine Siskins still hanging around

We have two Pine Siskins still hanging around our feeders and battling 
it out with the male Goldfinches now courting  and feeding their 
females. One busy Red Breasted Nuthatch has been here all winter.

Yesterday Gin had a friendly Fox Sparrow scratching behind our shed 
while she worked nearby.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox sparrow refuging

Under feeder. Just outside basin on Hile School Rd. 
Along with several tree sparrows and the very usual feeder birds: 
chickadees, cardinals, titmice, blue jays, juncos, redbellied woodpecker male, 
downy woodpecker, cowbird female, purple finches, House finches, a few 
starlings. 
Missing today are white-throated sparrows and E bluebirds that have been 
eating pokeweed berries all week.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow stopover

In 31 years here we have never had Fox Sparrows in numbers greater than one, 
rarely
two, stay more than a day or two spring and fall. As of today we have had three 
FOSP
now here for an extended stopover of two weeks!

As a side note, we ceased passerine banding operations here after Fall 2012
migration with some 125,000 birds banded since 1986. Amazingly, we are still 
seeing
a few banded birds as they return "home". Species include BC Chickadee, Tufted
Titmouse (the BCCH a migrant, the TUTI a local), Red-winged Blackbird, Common
Grackle, Song Sparrow (all migrant) and a local male Red-bellied Woodpecker. The
latter has to be at least 8 plus years of age while the former species all at 
least
in the 5 plus year area.

We are curious if others who reported FOSPs this year are also experiencing the
extended stay???

As far as I know, Yvonne, yours is the first 2017 Fox Sparrow found in the 
Cayuga Lake Basin. 
Another species which migrates early was also first reported today: a Golden 
Eagle seen by Tim Lenz northbound over the Lab of O.

Hey all,
Thought I would chime in briefly about the Fox Sparrow. I agree that it is
darker than the majority of the birds we get passing through the area. I
don't think it is out of the range of variation for Red, although it could
perhaps be indicative of a more western-breeding populations (zaboria).
Either way, good observation by Dave and Gary, certainly worth studying
out-of-season individuals even more carefully than we would normally do.

In a similar vein, Livia and I found what I believe to be an immature
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow with two leucophrys immatures in a tree

This is a rare but regular and undoubtedly overlooked vagrant in the east,
something to keep an eye out for.

Hi all,

Talking about Fox Sparrow, there are several reports of Fox Sparrows in the 
Northeast.  Mild winter to blame I guess.  I have not looked at ebird 
distributions. Also several reports of Grey Catbirds too. At least some of them 
have gone where they are supposed to be i.e. in Yucatan.


I took a 2+ mile walk along Six Mile Creek in beautiful afternoon. Nothing much 
except for a few Hairy woodpeckers and Chickadees.


BTW, I had posted about a familiar call of a Mexican bird a few days ago. Now I 
know the bird. They were Collared Forest Falcons. It just clicked me yesterday 
that it was falcon, then on trying a few calls of different species, I came 
upon Forest Falcon!

During the interval I went to the Lab of O feeder garden and had wonderful 
views of another bird we typically only see in migration, a Rusty Blackbird, 
among numerous other birds. That’s a multi-trophic-level bird feeder, with an 
adult Sharp-shinned Hawk who had eaten a male Northern Cardinal the day before, 
the same day the Rusty Blackbird was discovered, but the Sharp-shin was not 
successful (yet) when I saw it. I think it made at least 3 passes while I was 
present. There was also an adult Cooper’s Hawk perched over the Wilson Trail 
North. It not only tolerated the members of the Saturday morning bird walk 
viewing it through my scope, it stayed put while we walked below it and than 
scoped it from the other side as well. Perhaps it is a year-round resident of 
Sapsucker Woods, and recognizes that the people on the trails harmless, so it’s 
a waste of a bird's time and energy to keep fleeing the people. There’s a 
Red-tailed Hawk like that at the Lab also, which tends to sit on lampposts 
around the parking lot.  But I digress. 

I returned to Liddell and had great looks at the Fox Sparrow. I understand that 
several other people saw it as well that afternoon and today too. I now 
recommend that a large mouse-proof container of birdseed be added to every 
birder’s car kit, along with the field guide and binoculars. Some folks have 
tried setting up feeders in places like Summerhill State Forest. I first heard 
about Nelson’s Sparrow (then called Sharp-tailed Sparrow) at Treman State 
Marine Park when Jeff Wells saw one by putting out seed. I know that back in 
the day Arthur Allen kept feeders in Renwick Wildwood. As I drive around I see 
many empty bird feeders at people’s houses and I am tempted to fill them. Or it 
might be a nice gesture to donate birdseed to the people who maintain 
especially productive feeders. 

But about this out-of-season Fox Sparrow at the Liddell Lab. I noticed in Gary 
Kohlenberg’s eBird report that it was not as red as he expected. I, too, found 
that to be the case. Sibley shows the Red Fox Sparrow, which inhabits eastern 
North America as well as Canada and Alaska north and east of the Rockies, to 
have all bright rusty red streaks and spots below, including the malar stripes 
and the big central breast spot. Not so on this bird, whose central spot is 
dark brown and whose other spots and streaks form an interesting gradation from 
small dark brown spots low on the sides, to more chestnut brown farther up the 
sides to

January is only half over and already several people are in the running for 
having seen 100 CL Basin birds before the end of the month. Admittedly it’s a 
silly game, but then it is a great reason to get outside and enjoy the weather! 

One hundred birds in January is not impossible, but it requires finding just 
about every bird that normally winters here as well as chasing (or being the 
first to find) the so-called “half-hardies” and any unexpected incidentals. 
That was the goal of a group of us who drove around the lake yesterday. We were 
successful at finding the Killdeer and American Pipits at Myers and the Gray 
Catbird (first reported by Jay McGowan) at Portland Point. We were fortunate to 
be in the area when the report of Tufted Duck came in (found by Ken Rosenberg’s 
Waterfowl Count group) and subsequently found the two Greater White-fronted 
Geese just north of Union Springs. We found a trio of Trumpeter Swans at Mud 
Lock and later had four more fly over, calling, on Armitage Road. 

On the other hand, we did not re-find the Shrike on Carncross Road or the 
reported (somewhat questionable as to how long ago) Cranes on Van Dyne Spoor 
Road. Likewise, we did not find any Snowy Owls along Seybolt Road or the 
usually reliable Lesser Black-backed Gull at Dean’s Cove. 

This morning, with a couple of birds to go to get to 100, I stopped by the 
Liddell Lab on Freese Road, the location of a Fox Sparrow first reported by Tom 
Schulenberg on the Christmas Bird Count. The feeders, which during the week are 
kept full, were empty of seed and birds. I walked around a bit and returned to 
the feeder area, attracted by some Cardinal calls. There was motion on the 
ground under one of the feeders that quickly came into focus as a pair of 
White-throated Sparrows and - the Fox Sparrow!

Now the question is - head for Aurora to try for the mythical Eared Grebe or 
Long-tailed Duck (the latter reported there yesterday) - or Lake Como and the 
McIlroy Preserve for Ruffed Grouse (I had tracks there Friday but couldn’t find 
the bird) - or drive around Cayuga County looking for a flock of Horned 
Larks/Snow Buntings with a Lapland Longspur thrown in. Really hard to decide. I 
think it’s time for a nap!

Beautiful FOX SPARROW (FOY) eating bird seed on ground under Spruce tree in my 
front yard near dusk this evening, along with 7 female N. CARDINALS  at least 
4 male Cardinals, a SONG SPARROW, a few D.E. JUNCOS, 6 male RED-WINGED 
BLACKBIRDS.

Several SNOW GEESE flocks seen earlier on walk down road, all flying north or 
towards Cayuga Lake.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow; migration

While checking out the Red-throated Loon Dave found off the Farmers'
Market, I had my first-of-year RED FOX SPARROW in the brush at the
southwest corner.

A couple of hawkwatches from Sapsucker Woods this morning did not produce
anything unexpected, but I did see 5+ RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and 5 TUNDRA
SWANS, as well as Snow and Canada geese and other raptors. Students
reported ROSS'S GOOSE and BLACK VULTURE over campus earlier.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow Wilson North

Quick turn around north Wilson Trail, found FOS FOX SPARROW foraging near the 
rise. In the creekbed by the footbridge, two gorgeously rusty RUSTY BLACKBIRDs. 
I think every one I’ve ever seen before was basically black but these two were 
really handsome brown backed, dark underside, with those bright eyes. Also 
heard a new (for me) vocalization from a pair of interacting WHITE-CROWNED 
SPARROWs, a sharp ‘peek’ almost Hairy or Cardinal-like. They jumped up on a 
shrub and did it right in front of me, so definitely them. There was also full 
song from other WCSP as well as the more usual ‘tseep’ foraging calls.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow and Turkeys displaying

We have a Fox Sparrow foraging in the front lawn today as well as 3 Turkeys
displaying for many hens.  At one point the males were strutting down the
middle of the street in full display on Burns Rd in Brooktondale.

Finally, my favorite spring arrival, a Fox Sparrow appeared this morning, 
hop-scratching under our feeders. To hear it sing in our yard would add to the 
pleasure.
A pair of Purple Finches (m,ƒ) has been around for a few days. We also had a 
few Pine Siskins appear briefly on their way northward.

A Fox Sparrow sang here for a few minutes after the last rain shower passed.

Sky watchers may grumble about the weather, as solar wind activity (and the 
chance of a northern lights display) will be high tonight in the vicinity of 
earth, and even higher tomorrow night, but cloud cover will probably prevent 
any observation from our area.

Hi all,

I was very surprised to see a very red FOX SPARROW under my feeder in northeast 
Ithaca this morning. A late record and one of the few I've had in my suburban 
yard. Like others I've had a single AM TREE SPARROW for the past few days -- 
also surprisingly uncommon in my yard -- and two female PURPLE FINCHES (the 
first I've had since October).
