That is so cool! I recall hearing that during WWII, cattail pollen was explored as a protein source, a way to fortify breads, etc. We have used it in bread, although it wasn’t something that led me to spend time collecting it in quantity. So the gallinules might be making a very good choice!

On the AutoLoop at MNWR today , I saw two different Common Gallinules climb cattails to get to the pollen. They were eating it themselves and also feeding it to their young. The 30 sec picknit also shows some Gallinule parenting.
