[cayugabirds-l] Grosbeak
Just after I read that Marie had a Grosbeak, a male Grosbeak showed up at my feeder in Auburn. [cayugabirds-l] Grosbeak
I checked my feeders first thing this morning and there was a RB Grosbeak . They must have moved north quickly. My new bird feeder migrants have kept pace with Ithaca. I also have 5 W TH Sparrows. I didn't get the huge fallout others did. I still have a few Juncos. Yesterday the Purple Finch was back. Looks like I better get my Oriole feeders out. [cayugabirds-l] Grosbeak, Sparrows, House Finch mating dance
They're on the move. We had our first ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK (male) at our feeders this morning. Also, our WHITE-THROATED SPARROW numbers seem to have dropped off overnight. Only counted 20 or so thus far today (45+ yesterday). We now have 2 WHITE-CROWNS. It's nice to hear their plaintive song again. I was amused to watch 2 male HOUSE FINCH flitting (dancing?) up and down at each other on our roof, while a female sat next to them appearing to be totally uninterested in their shenanigans. If I were to substitute members of our own species in this play, I can imagine the female thinking to herself, "You guys are weird!" Larry -- W. [cayugabirds-l] Grosbeak
I've been watching my very busy feeders for much of the afternoon and finally a male Rose Breasted Grosbeak showed up! He's sitting up in a maple tree overlooking the feeders but hasn't come down to one yet. Now he's come down to the ground to feed. I still have both White Throated and White Crowned Sparrows. My predominate birds are Goldfinches. No Oriole or Hummingbirds yet, though the feeders are out. I love these birdy days!
