The Short Eared Owls put on a good show this afternoon in the field around the Long Point winery, with one of the birds favoring a vineyard post as a perch (the NW-most post, occasionally the SW one). The clear skies and low sun made for great photography conditions with the birds getting somewhat close and crossing the road every now and then (Diana, one of several birders there enjoying the spectacle, said they were even closer along 90, but the traffic situation wasn't great for stopping).
I arrived around 2:45 when Diana pointed out the perched owl (thanks, Diana). Further down the road was an adult bald eagle in the middle of the field - a rather unexpected sighting - who eventually flew off as the first short-eared hunt began. At one point I heard some odd "whooping" sounds, and it took me a while to think to look up as a skein of tundra swans flew by.
