[cayugabirds-l] MNWR Friday
Main highlights came from Knox-Marsellus Marsh in the form of a breeding-plumaged Ruddy Turnstone. There was a plover I thought was Am. Golden Plover but in retrospect didn't look at carefully so entered in eBird as Black-bellied/Am. Golden Plover. Most phalarope candidates eventually became Lesser Yellowlegs with a little more watching. Having bad luck catching up to Wilson's that have been reported. The only shorebird I saw that never moved was a Red-necked Phalarope floating on the water. Smaller size, face pattern, and bill profile looked good for RN. Plenty of peeps to look through, Stilt Sandpipers, and SB Dowitchers. Puddler had some yellowlegs. Dave W. N. [cayugabirds-l] MNWR - Friday
Lots of action at the Savannah mucklands and Knox-Marsellus Marsh. As on Tuesday, a good number of gulls continue to pull worms from the mud - about 50/50 Ring-bill/Herring. Lots of geese at both spots including White-fronted at K-M and a white goose I couldn't decide on at the mucks. David Wheeler N. Hi Sue, I have a photo of a couple that are pretty close to this stage at: http://www.chirpsandcheeps.com/. It's the third row down on the left. Click on it to enlarge - and then you can enlarge further using the icon at the top right of the photo. Hope that helps, ~ Sue -Original Message- From: bounce-117433978-60225...@list.cornell.edu [mailto:bounce-117433978-60225...@list.cornell.edu] On Behalf Of John and Sue Gregoire Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2014 9:14 AM To: John and Sue Gregoire Cc: cayugabirds-l; KHAMOLISTSERV Subject: Re: [cayugabirds-l] MNWR Friday- children's specialty day The natal plumage of the young Gallinules still showed their red heads and wings. Wonderful visit to the main refuge this afternoon where it was children's day! On the drive we listened to American Bittern from the shorebird wetland as we watched two Least Bittern criss cross the drive to fetch and return food for their young which were on the east side. Around that same area a we just missed good looks at a Virginia Rail and young but did see several Black Tern, Caspian Tern Green Heron and some real young on the main pool side. Here in the canal we found one group of three adult Gallinule and 7 chicks still in the black natal down. A bit further north, just beyond the red flag, we spotted many more gallinule chicks that were quite a bit older. That continued all the way to LaRue's as we saw many more. We also had many young coot and while watching the antics of those families, up popped two Pied-billed Grebe youngsters and their parent. That area produced many more coot young as we creeped along. Of course, we don't have a decent telephoto lens so our pix are identifiable but fuzzy -much like those very young Gallinules! Tsache tower produced a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, one eagle and at least 13 Great Egret among the other species present. Before heading back we walked the towpath with not much to report other than butterflies and katydids and Sandhill cranes. -- John and Sue Gregoire Field Ornithologists Kestrel Haven Avian Migration Observatory 5373 Fitzgerald Road Burdett,NY 14818-9626 Website: http://www.empacc.net/~kestrelhaven/ "Conserve and Create Habitat" -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] MNWR - Friday night
Seemed better than earlier in the week. Both the Visitor's Center pool and Wildlife Drive spot have good water levels and are attracting shorebirds. The Main Pool is getting herons in the open area and may get shorebirds at some point. Benning Marsh is also looking good. Highlight was a juvenile Bonaparte's Gull and possible Western Sandpiper at the Visitor Center pool. The peep had a big long bill but not much droop at the end and was feeding near a Stilt Sandpiper. I've been mostly seeing peeps from 500 yards so far this year, so at 50 yards there's a sudden flood of plumage information. Perhaps it was lighting but the plumage wasn't exactly what I think of for Western and I left it unsure which. Someone else may get to see it and I also have a photo I can post. 34-35 Great Egret at Mays Point but no wing tags that I could see. Dave W.
