[cayugabirds-l] Merlins in Trumansburg
A Merlin pair has been noticeable around the upper village during April (single bird first noted on March 16), but it appears that they have not yet begun to nest. For the last several days, they have been doing a lot of vocalizing in the immediate vicinity of my house, on the block bounded by Bradley and Strowbridge Sts, and the county line division East Seneca Rd. Today I got extended scope views of the female grooming itself on its favorite perching tree of late, a black locust along the easterly side of Bradley north of #36. It was doing the majority of the "whinnying", with the male responding with sharp and short "kip" calls per Pieplow, which he names as a courtship or pair contact call. Twice I have seen the male fly right at the female on its perch, but immediately the female has flown out without apparent contact. One of the norway spruce trees that was being favored today had been recently visited by a crow pair with nesting material, but there was no sign of them today. [cayugabirds-l] Merlins in T’burg
On a walk last evening (April 2) I had a male and female Merlin on treetops within about 200’ in the upper village of Trumansburg close to the conservatory on McLallen St. The female was calling steadily. But sheesh, I just passed my neighbor Marc Devokaitis who reported seeing copulatory behavior (if not the act itself) this afternoon, up around Bradley St. where we live. There has been a Fish Crow pair around the trees near the corner of Old Main and Washington St. this past week. Lots of single calls. I’ve seen and heard them in flight but haven’t before noticed any roost site fidelity, if indeed that is what I am seeing. I don’t know enough of their habits to score it as a “pair in suitable habitat” much as I would like to. [cayugabirds-l] Merlins in Tompkins County
With the essential help of the Ithaca birdingcommunity, I have monitored the nesting success of Merlins in Tompkins County.I have been able to document an increased abundance since 2014: # of nests (year): 2 (2014), 6 (2015), 6 (2016), 5 (2017), 6 (2018),6 (2019), 9 (2020). This information has led to one publication and anothersubmission, expanding our understanding of the Merlin population, thanks toyour help. The help of many people this year have alreadyguided me to several nests. But, in contrast to the high number of nests lastyear, this year has so far seems to have declined to what may be thesustainable abundance of only 6 nests Burleigh Dr. Lansing Maplewood Dr. Cornell Heights Bridges Ithaca City Cemetery Dryden (already predated) I know the general location of two pair but nottheir nests: Trumansburg and Elm St. Extension. I do not share location of nests except for thosenests that are accessible from public land and are already exposed to andacclimated to major human activity. Merlins are quiet around their nests in May butquite noisy in June as they bring food to the young. I would appreciate yourhelp if you know of any Merlin nest maybe with noisy June nestlings. [cayugabirds-l] Merlins at Buffalo and Schuyler Pl
Yesterday evening around 7, while biking up Buffalo St, I heard some strange vocalizations that eventually included some more familiar merlin calls as one bird flew over to a tree at the corner with Schuyler Place. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Merlins @ GIAC
About 6:15pm in Cass Park near the Children’s Garden I saw a Merlin flying east toward the general direction of GIAC. It was coming off West Hill somewhere and was well above treetop level when it went over me, but appeared to be descending slightly. Maybe they hunt over a wide area, or maybe it was visiting. - - Dave Nutter > On May 16, 2019, at 7:44 PM, Suan Yong wrote: > > I’m right now listening to and watching two Merlins calling to each other > from deciduous trees in the block north of GIAC (Albany and Court) around the > swimming pool and field. I sure wish you could export some of those Merlins to me up in Auburn. I have tons of House Sparrows for them to eat. Immediately afterward I saw a MERLIN carrying small prey and flying from near the source of the sound, proceeding northeast low over Joe's Restaurant, across Meadow Street, then lost to view among treetops. Was the nest by the Finger Lakes Land Trust office successful? That's the direction it went. I don't know whether the sound was from the Merlin, its prey, its prey's parent, or another witness. By the way, I haven't noticed an actual shortage of House Sparrows yet, and to me Merlins seem like a good trade for them so far. --Dave Nutter On Jul 28, 2015, at 09:22 AM, John Confer con...@ithaca.edu wrote: Thanks to assistance from participants in the cayugabirds-l, Mark Witmer, Maddie Ulinski, and I were able to monitor 7 Merlin nests this spring-summer. [cayugabirds-l] Merlins Mating Downtown Ithaca
This was yesterday evening between 5:15-5:30pm, from the front porch of our apartment. We were observing the birds across our street, in the backyards of houses bordered by Hudson, Pleasant, and Prospect St. We heard a very fast, high pitched Ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki- (thought woodpecker at first). Scanned to see the two birds in an oak tree for one attempt. The female flew off into a near by spruce about 30-40 yards away immediately after. After about 5 more minutes, we saw the male fly in the direction of the female with very fast, fluttering wing beats, calling, and hooking up with the female for a second time, then he returned to the oak tree, at which point the observation window had to close.
