[cayugabirds-l] Morning birds/bear

2020-06-21 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Scarlet tanager singing unseen in a tree. Rose breasted grosbeak, lots of B
Orioles, (3 nests that I know of) here.
for the first time I remember, a juvenile gray-headed Red bellied woodpecker
coming with parent to suet. Young one has learn to eat on the suet cage by
itself.

Cat birds & orioles eating jars full of jelly. I hope they don’t get cavities
w/ all that sugar😁. Flying squirrels & chipmunks eating jelly too.

Reported: small bear (yearling?) trying to pull down bird feeders in west hill
area of ithaca. Seen by a few people.

Driving up the lower part of Stone Quarry Road, we caught a great view of a
brightly red-topped Pileated woodpecker getting breakfast from a small tree
right at the road's edge.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning birds

2017-04-27 Thread Donna Lee Scott
At 7:30 am a mature BALD EAGLE took off from one of my beach cliff trees & flew
south.
A few minutes later while I was standing on my second story deck, I heard a
BELTED KINGFISHER calling & flying north to south over lake edge, then over my
head towards the woods east of my house. It called the whole time it was flying
over the woods, south to north., eventually circling around back to lake shore.
Then soon it flew the same big circle over the woods, & back to lake again.
I wondered if it is looking for a suitable bank in which to make a nesting
burrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning birds/injured RT

2017-02-20 Thread Donna Lee Scott
250-ish Snow Geese in raft on lake
Immature Bald Eagle fly by.
2 N. Flickers calling from opposite sides of yard
Usual suspects at feeders
Lots of bird song early

Sadly, after day of good birding at Salt Pt & inland up north, yesterday, my
neighbor alerted me to injured Red Tailed Hawk he earlier found by road. It was
no longer where he saw it, but
I located it in my little woods near RR track, wrapped it in blanket (little
resistance, tho bird was alert), got it gently into a pet carrier & ultimately
took it to Cornell Vet School wildlife vet last night.
They will assess its injuries today.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning birds

2015-06-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Today when I got out of house to walk to work, first thing I heard was a
Scarlet Tanager singing from my yard. Along the EIRW, there was Common
Yellowthroat in his usual location. He sang and kept on eye on me while I
walked past him. Further little down along the way right on the edge of the
path was an enthusiastic Wood Thrush singing.

That made my day for today!

Cheers
Meena
PS: Yesterday around 5.00 am there was a Great Horned Owl calling from
Strawberry Hills woods.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning birds

2015-05-08 Thread Geo Kloppel
This morning I climbed to the top of "Sorry Hunter Hill" (1,920 summit, West
Danby). I encountered a number of Scarlet Tanagers along the way. Hooded
Warblers and American Redstarts are also back in force. Lady slippers are just
peeking out of the leaf litter.

Without looking for it, I happened to walk right under this year's Raven nest
in a thick hemlock forest (the noisy youngsters give themselves away). Just
one or two nestlings I think, and confined to the still-sturdy nest, not ready
to hop around on the adjacent branches.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning Birds

2013-04-27 Thread Carol Keeler
Lots of birds at the feeders this morning. I got my FOS Purple Finch. I've
been watching for its arrival. I had one White Throated Sparrow a few days
ago. It had a one day stop. Also there are two Red- Bellied Woodpeckers eating
black oilseed. Downy seems to like getting peanuts out of the shell. Most of
the regulars are here too. There's Goldfinches, House Finches, Chickadees,
Cardinals, Tufted Titmouse, lots of Juncos, and Chipping Sparrows. A
Mockingbird 's out there singing. The undesirables are here too,
unfortunately- Grackles, Cowbirds, and House Sparrows. I'll take a walk down
by the creek later to see if any non feeder migrants have returned. The White
Crowned Sparrows usually show up when the Serviceberry is in bloom, which
should be soon. The Tree Swallows are looking at the nest boxes. It's a
wonderful birdy morning. On a disappointing note, I haven't heard any
Meadowlarks yet and I have always had them.

On a non bird note, the coyote was here last night. I had one trapped in my
garden back in February. It's paw prints are all over the driveway. There's
rabbit hair on the back lawn. I've been hoping for a coyote to get rid of all
my rabbits.
