I was awake a lot last night and heard geese flying for s good part of the

As others have noted, lotsa geese going over right now (and have been all

Also on Mt Pleasant:
Killdeer
Horned Lark (one singing briefly plus a flock of about 25 flying around)
Red-winged Blackbird
Another Red-winged Blackbird is already noisily claiming part of the beaver
marsh
On my pre-feast walk on Mt Pleasant Road, few bird species, but a cool
observation (or 2).
I'd noticed a Red-tailed Hawk flying at one point. Later on my way back, I
heard a brief Red-tailed Hawk-like call from the woods on my right. My
interpretation was Blue Jay, and wondered what motivated
There was also a single Lapland Longspur at Mt Pleasant yesterday, mixed in
with about 200 Snow Buntings and about 50 Horned Larks. And an immature Bald
Eagle floated by. And kinda weird to hear Cardinals and Juncos in full song
while staring at a flock of Snow Buntings.

Intrigued by Marie's measurements from yesterday, I walked Mt. Pleasant Rd.
this morning. Not much in the fields, but the woods and brushy areas had
more birds than I have seen up there in a long time. Going from Mineah to
Baker Hill Rds. I encountered

12 or so American Pipits, 9 of which obligingly perched on the wires giving me
great views of their elongated hind
A quick walk up on Mt Pleasant Rd this morning netted the following:
American Pipits several in the newly ploughed field opposite the radio tower.
There was also a flock of Horned Larks there the day it was ploughed, not new
arrivals, I surmise, but simply those unfortunate individuals whose

Mt Pleasant hosted a flock of 140+ Cedar Waxwings in the shrubby area just west
of the observatory, feasting on buckthorn berries around 11:15 this morning.
Also a Rough-legged Hawk perched in a tree by the roadside a bit farther east.

On Sunday afternoon, around 3:30, there was a flock of 12 Horned Larks with
about half as many Snow Buntings flying in the fields at the eastern end of Mt
Pleasant Rd. The same number of Horned Larks were also in the same area,
feeding in the snow-free patches of ground, on Friday afternoon.
